I have an LG BD390, and I want to connect it directly to my cable modem via ethernet cable, while my PC is connected to the modem via USB.  The BR player will not setup a dynamic IP.  What settings (if any) do I have to change on my computer to make this work, and/or what do I have to enter for a static IP in the BR player?  Thanks in advance...

I think your problem may just be that you're trying to connect BOTH devices at the same time.  I'm fairly sure a cable modem can only connect to 1 IP address at a time...to have more connected, you'd need a router.

If all you're looking to do is update the firmware once on your Blu-ray player, I'd suggest unplugging your computer from the modem (remove the USB from the modem), rebooting the modem (unplug for a minute or 2), then once the modem has booted up and is connected to the network, then connect your ethernet cable to your Blu-ray.  Your Blu-ray should then pick up an IP address.  When you're done, just backtrack through the steps to get your computer working again.

If you want your blu-ray and PC connected all the time, I think you'll need to get a router.

You should buy a cheap router and connect both devices (and more future devices) via ethernet cable and/or a wireless network connection.  Most routers offer some basic internet network security for your devices as well.

If you are just looking to update the firmware you can burn it to a CD and then you don't have to mess with your current setup. If you want the player to be connected I would also suggest dumping the USB connection (ethernet is better for networking) and use a router which will give you 5 (or more) ports to use.
