YES, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE: A handful of high-definition TV viewers e-mailed to gripe about Channel 4 posting a wind-chill reading on the screen over the weekend, which didn't allow for HD programming.

No, they don't yet have the technical ability to post such graphics and retain HD. Yes, they will at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Yes, it often gets this cold in January. Yes, they know that at Channel 4.

Yes, viewers have every right to gripe about it. Gripe directly to Channel 4 at //www.todaystmj4.com/about/contact.

No, griping won't change anything as long as weather brings viewers to local newscasts, the money-makers for network affiliates.

And, finally: no, you don't have a constitutional right to have HD pictures on your TV.[/COLOR]

I would have to add that, no we don't have a right to HD, but we don't have to be stuck watching down-converted SD content either.  There are too many options out there to be slighted like this.

I can't see how any reasonable person can conclude that rating will go up by having a superimposed temperature and wind chill graphic.  That's just silly.  But, if we stick to our guns, ratings will go down.

For what it's worth, they seem to be showing The Last Templar in HD tonight.  Even though the temp and wind chill are comparable to what they were yesterday afternoon.  Too bad there's no point in watching part two of a two-part series when we skipped part one.

That's what happens when you own multiple media outlets/  You can put out what you want.

I think Mr. Cuprisin is tired of hearing about local HD anything.

Because every time someone mentions it he seems to get all huffy-puffy about why local stations shouldn't go HD.

UncleMeat

If the SB is badly messed, I will be doing two things:

1) Watching the broadcast at nfl.com/live and turning NBC off completely.  I guess I could hook my TV up to my computer and still get it on the larger screen.

2) Taking off work on the 2nd, heading down Capitol to visit the TMJ folks in person and letting them know I'll be adding them to my blocked channels list.

Hopefully they can resist the urge to avoid tampering with the biggest TV event since MASH.

He actually used to post here, but I don't know if he still does.  I don't recall seeing anything from him lately.

After the canned response I got from Mr Wexler I was fuming.  So I wrote him again.  I told him I appreciated his quick reply but that I would still like to know why the feel the need to post the temperature and drop HD proramming?

I got no response.

I had also sent a follow up email on Sunday, after receiving the initial reply.  I didn't get any other response, either.

I actually had the illusion that we got through for a while. . .

Don't you know that there only purpose  is to build ratings, for the evening local   newscast to get their viewers excited about how bad it is outside.

Why would anyone living in Wisconsin get excited about 14 degree temperatures with a 2 degree windchill?  That doesn't even make any sense.  If this were Florida, I could kind of understand how they'd be tempted to do it, but these are not threatening or unseasonable conditions.

If they think viewers want a constant reminder of how cold it is outside, I think they're mistaken.  That's one of the reasons that people are inside watching TV.

They also went to standard definition for Saturday Night Live.  Did they really think by doing that, news ratings for the next day would increase?

I had a separate idea after seeing the windchill appear on the screen.

Email and call WTMJ4 every few minutes just to tell them the temperature and the temperature with wind chill.  See if they find it annoying.

OlsonNet

While e-mailing them is nice, it's too easy for them to ignore. Phone calls are better, as is mailing them giant thermometers with nasty notes attached to them ;)

I found a screencap of WTMJ's weather alert bar without text, so I had some fun:

I like that!  Can you add "It's cold out" or "It's snowing"?

Breaking news:  TMJ4 is now running an HD news crawl.  I watched the news cut-in before 9 am and it finally happened.

That's funny. The only problem with it is that the news is on. When TMJ 4's lovely standard definition news is on, there's no HD to drop.

To their credit, however, they seem to have upgraded their sound to dolby digital from stereo.
