Captioning issues on 10-1

I have been recording (to DVD) This Old House on 10-1, when it's not interrupted by fundraising or other specials.  My DVD recorder is a Panasonic DMR-EZ48 is connected to my TV via HDMI.  

I was recording on 10 analog but found I could not get closed captions even when I turned on captioning on the recorder.  (I am aware that HDMI does not carry captioning info so it has to be decoded on the recorder or other device).

When I switched to record from 10-1, I also did not get captions.  I can get captions from other live shows via the the DVD recorder tuner, but I do not see any digital captions on 10-1 for This Old House.  

I am confused and wondering if MPTV is sending captioning info via ATSC.  Can anybody shed some light on this or tell me what I am doing wrong?  Thanks.
