Copper isn't that bad IMO.. sure it's not fiber, but they are finding ways to increase bandwidth.  Eventually they are going to pair bond (so I've heard) - use two pairs instead of the one that they're using right now.  There are emerging DSL technologies (IPSL) that allow 100+Mbps over the old copper.  Even the VDSL2 that they are currently using can get up to 100Mbps.  From reading U-verse forums it appears that sync between the VRAD and the residential gateway is up to 100Mbps on some people's setups.
