DirectTV Here I Come!

Weather it is a contract negation (money issue), bandwidth issue, or any number of other excuses they can come up with I, like many others on this forum, have been frustrated by TWC's apparent unwillingness to provide more HD channels to its subscribers. Yes there are some good channels available but I have two HDTV's and I WANT MORE HD CONTENT!!!

So now I had a dilemma, do I stay with TWC and continue to be frustrated or do I tell them to shove it and get DirectTV? This is a battle that I have been fighting for at least the last six months. Over that time I have found myself at directtv.com countless times pricing out a system, almost daily in the last few weeks. I find myself drooling over the amount of HD channels that they have and get excited with the promise of more in the near future.

Well I am happy to say that on December 4th I took the plunge and ordered DirectTV.  My install date is set for the morning Saturday December 15. If the installer shows up on time and all goes well I will be taking my cable boxes to the closest TWC store and cancelling my service that evening.

I have been a TWC subscriber since I got married in 1999 and they have been good to me. I have never really had an issue with them so it will be with mixed feelings that I say good bye, at lease until I can scroll through all the HD channels with DirectTV

With the exception of a few programs my wife and I watch completely different shows and we almost NEVER watch a show live, we DVR everything and watch them after the kids go to bed.

5-LNB Multi-Satellite Dish (Free)
Plus HD DVR Package ($49.99 for 12 months)
HD Extra Package (Free for 3 months)
HBO, Starz, Showtime, Cinemax (Free for 3 months will be cancelled after that)
2 HD DVR's
1 SD DVR

That is what I got, the CSR said that she does not know if I will be receiving the HR20 or the HR21. Personally I would prefer the HR21, the only show on CBS that I care if I see in HD is The Unit and I have a Windows Media Center PC with and HD Tuner in it so I can record it there. Also with any luck CBS58 and DirectTV will become friends soon.

Best part of it, however, is that the first HD DVR only cost me $99.00. Of course that is really $299.00 with a $100.oo instant rebate and then a credit $100.00 credit on my first bill, then $299 for the second HD DVR and $99 for the SD DVR.

I called 4 or 5 times to try and get a better price on the other units but none of the CSR's that I talked to would budge.

After the 12 months are up I will still be paying less then I would have with TWC.

Anyway sorry to bore anyone who is reading this but I just had to show my excitement to someone other then my wife who just does not get it. Don't get me wrong I love her to death but when it comes to HDTV she just does not care as much as I do.

Thanks for reading.

I am also new to Directv and new to posting on the forum here.  Been with D* for about 1 month and I have been extremely pleased.  The only challenge has been getting my fiancee to learn the location of all the new channels.  Made the switch after some deplorable service from TWC when trying to get my service transferred from my old apartment to my new house.

I do have a question and I am hoping some other Directv users can help.  I am a big baseball fan and I am wondering what kind of HD coverage I can expect to receive from the MLB Extra Innings package.  I really enjoy how D* has all of the HD games for the Sunday Ticket and I am hoping for something similar with MLB.  Does anyone know what I can expect or is it too early to tell?

Welcome to the forum, nwerner!

While both you and jamisonweber have got D* for your HD channel delivery, many of us do know it's the most-bang-for-the-buck, so to speak....congradulations!
:D

As for HD channels, Directv shows 47 HD channels, not including the local RSNs in HD or the multiple HD PPV offerings added:
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPageNR.jsp?assetId=P4380112
Add these 46 HD channels (actually Golf HD and Versus HD are the same channel) to the original 9 HD channels and you have 55 HD channels from DirectHD.
Then add the 3, 4 or 5 HD locals (3 for Milwaukee, 4 most other locations and 5 for places like Chicagoland to my immediate south), you have 60 HD channels!
Compare that to the measy 20 HD channels TWC offers locally, not including FSN FOX and the one HD PPV channel and their pricing and you know why many with the ability to switch from TWC to D* for HD channel selection - are.;)

For me, IF TWC locally could at least add the other ten HD channels that TWC does offer nationally (making it 30 HD channels), it would help:
I can still watch USAHD and Sci-FiHD showings (as available) on the HR20 at friend's house with D*, at least for now!

DirectvHD rocks and it will stay that way until TWC gets its "HD act together", if that ever happens!

Welcome to DTV.  I switched about 3 weeks ago and have no regrets.  Its the little things I have found that I really appreciate.   My wings in HD on VS HD on Monday, Costa Rican soccer team Saprissa on Wed on GOL (I work with some Costa Ricans), checked the score on the Bears/Redskins game before coming down to my computer, and come to find out, my alma mater Ferris State University (Big Rapids MI) will be on one of the sports channels on Saturday night!!

The HD content is the reason I switched, but I am finding a lot of little sports gems that I didn't anticipate.

I love my DTV and I'm sure you will too.

btw, my wife doesn't get it either.....

Welcome aboard.  I switched about 8 years ago and have not regretted it for a second.
