Looks like we can expect more of the same from CBS 58

Quote from: Mikey;38461Games have started.

On Timewarner channel 5, the game is on in regular old SD.

On Channel 505, there is nothing but a TRIVIA on, looking like a computer screen saver.  No HD game.  Channel 5 stated the game was in HD.   Yet TW 505 has no game on at all.

WTF!?!?

I have called, there is a 60 minute call back time to speak to anyone at TW.

Upon further review, channel 58-1 is showing the same damn thing, so it is a CBS 58 issue.

:

Check channels 581, 582, 583, etc.  In the past years, 505 goes blank and that bandwidth is used to multicast all the games concurrently in the 58x range.

They are having 583, 584 & 585 have games, but nothing is in HD.

Nothing.

****es me off.

On cbs589's own website, they list their HD channel as airing the BC vs. TT game, yet there is no game being shown on their HD channel.

Are we not going to get teh Marquette and Bucky games in HD now?

F---!

SD lite!  CBS 58 is doing this for our benefit!?

CBS 58 can either multicast SD games or show one game in HD (along with it's SD counterpart on ch. 5) due to bandwidth limitations.  Why is this so hard to understand?  Their management has chosen to utilize SD multicasting.  Their thinking must be that the majority of college basketball fans would rather watch a variety of games at the same time rather than just getting stuck with one regional game to watch.  It's also a great promotional tool for the station.

Again, I've been told they will show the Wisconsin and Marquette games in HD on 505 thus abandoning multicasting while those games are LIVE.  When those games are over, they will go back to multicasting.

Tonight's Marquette game will tell the tale.

Or get DirecTV and order the March Madness package.

Is the PQ really that bad? I like the idea of being able to see all the games, but it's unfortunate that we can't enjoy them in HD. Is this only for the first two rounds of the tournament? I hope we can see the games in HD at least from the Sweet 16 forward.

EXACTLY my point.  Everyone has the option to get all the games via Directv.  What we DON'T have the option of is getting the game that CBS-58 is airing locally in HD, as D* MUST black it out due to territorial restrictions.

It's unfair and could be borderline antitrust.  If CBS would show us the HD game as they are supposed to, then we'd all have the ABILITY to get EVERY NCAA game in HD IF we so chose.

They have taken consumer choice out of our hands.  America is about letting the consumer choose.

BOO CBS-58.

I'm trying to find the "primary" CBS-58 game today (Old Dominion vs Butler).

I check 58-1 and I just see a stupid static graphic.

58-2:  High school

58-3 thru 58-5 - the other games.

Are you kidding me?  They are not even digitally broadcasting their "primary" game on their digital channels?  This analog stuff is really bad, especially on the new TV's of today.

I MUST be doing something wrong.  There is no way CBS-58 would waste a subchannel on a graphic (their primary one no less of 58-1), and not even put on their primary game on a digital channel, would they?

I'm assuming that the only place we'll be able to find Wisky and Marquette will be analog too?

Will CBS-58 EVER show HD?  I'm guessing the Final Four will be analog too?

SHOW THE HD GAMES PLEASE!  THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO, and more importantly that is what the DIGITAL SPECTRUM WAS DESIGNED FOR!

Mikey

I guess they chose just to have multiple SD games simultaneously rather than 1 HD game.

Everytime I see the "Broadcast in HD" at the start of any game now, it just ****es me off.

Hopefully it is only this way for the 1st round or 2 and no more.

I'd rather watch one game in HD myself and let CBS cut in at relevant points in other games, but that is just me.

I have become very jaded towards SD television when I am at home watching my 56".

I'm just trying to figure out where the primary game is (Butler right now) is on their digital channels.

I've already given up on them ever showing an HD game.  As they showed last night by not airing Jericho in HD (their best show in my opinion) they really don't care about their HD viewers at all.

I believe the rest of the country saw Jericho in HD.  Why didn't we?  Because CBS has no interest in the HD demographic.

Which is really stupid on their part.  It's a demographic that has disposable income (typically, as they bought expensive TV's) which advertisers love.  CBS obviously does not care for them.

I'm done with CBS-58.  I will no longer watch Jericho.  Or any of their other shows.  I will point my antenna towards Madison and will not watch them anymore.

Granted, I'm only 1 household, so I'm sure they don't care.  But I'll bet there are other HD lovers out there that feel the same way about the HORRIBLE way CBS-58 runs their station and disrespects their HD viewers.

The reason why CBS is broadcasting ALL the games in HD this year is because they EXPECT their affiliates to broadcast it that way.  I wonder if there is anything we can do to get new management in the Milwaukee location.

I guess I'll start with a letter to CBS corporate and tell them all the issues that our local has in disrespecting their HD viewers.

You know what would be cool is if instead of showing 3-4 crappy subchannels, to combine 4 games into 1 screen, then just show that as a subchannel along with an HD game on their main channel.  I know it would pull bandwidth away from an HD game, but it would probably be more manageable then 5 separate channels all with a very low bit-rate.  We're already used to WMLW being on 58-2, so we know they can manage an HD channel with 1 subchannel and it still looks watchable.

of the games i've watched had terrible PQ.  Most were fine.  The only thing that will make this satisfactory is if the Marquette and Wisconsin are in fact shown in HD.  It's too bad CBS out of Chicago isn't an option.  It looks like they aren't multicasting.

I just checked the schedule at the CBS58 web site. It looks like the Marquette game WILL NOT BE BROADCAST ON THE DIGITAL STREAM AT ALL!!!

This is intolerable. I thought that they had to at least simulcast the analog broadcast in digital form.

Tom Snyder

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking there is simply more revenue for CBS-58 in the carrying every single game multicast scenario than there is in showing fewer games but having all of them in HD.

And if there's more revenue, nobody's going to be replacing the management at CBS58 anytime soon.

Perhaps someone from CBS58 could weigh in on this?

Yes, but why are they not showing the Marquette game as one of the multi-cast games? Do I have to dust off and use my analog TV just to watch a local team in the playoffs?
