Quote from: QuimaxW;37275Does anyone else have problems with 18.1 still?

I just purchased a pcHDTV tuner, running with MythTV.  I got the channel added to my list, but I can't get a lock on it today.  When I scan the channels, it doesn't show up today even.

Yesterday it was fine.
The day before it was pixalized, like I was getting a bad signal.

I am receiving *all* of the other Milwuakee stations without a problem, with an "almost outside" (rafters in the garage) antenna, living in Waukesha.

Any thoughts or ideas?  Perhaps the antenna (which I think is pointed W-NW) needs to be reaimed somewhat?

Which way is your antenna pointing? W-NW? or E-NE?
Can you provide a picture?

I could provide a picture, but I'm not sure how much help it would be.  The antenna is in the rafters of the garage.

I was wrong, it's not W-NW, it *is* actually pointed E-NE (yea, I have problems remembering that Milwaukee is East not West of Waukesha, although I do know which direction to point.)

The only thing I was thinking of trying was monkeying with the position of the antenna to see if I can get it pointed in a better direction.  It's just that it's like, cold and stuff outside!

How well does this antenna pick up analog channel 58 & (if possible) analog channel 63?  Too long of the wrong cable will cause attenuation at higher frequencies. Bad connections and impedance mismatches will introduce reflections in the received signals at varying frequencies. If possible check your reception at the antenna with a short cable to determine if you have any cabling issues. If analog stations come in poorly the digitals will have problems too.

Ananlog, I've always received 18 & 24 the best.  4 & 6 were ok, but could use improved. 58 analog is grainy and has never been clear.

I'll have to look into the length of the cable and impedance.  The antenna is a hand me down antenna and didn't come with a connector.  I had a connector around, but I don't know if it's right.  It's an adapter from 2 screw connectors to the coax.

How long of a cable is too long?  The cable is running across the house, but I don't think it's any longer than like 40 feet or so.

Thanks for keeping my brain running.

By the way, Channel 61 Rochelle, IL got a permit to move to Chicago, FCC records aren't up-to-date. They're on the Hancock, and I get a weak signal from them in DeKalb. They are currently showing MTV3.

If you have a smaller analog tv try connecting it near the antenna with a short cable. This will let you know how well the antenna is performing. 58 analog in Waukesha with a good antenna should look good. If it (58) looks grainy any channel above that would be suffering as well. With the antenna in the garage attic, think about any obstacles in the signals path. The roof will offer some attenuation along with anything else that is in the way (snow on the roof, neighbors house, trees). Antennas perform the best outdoors.

The longer the cable the less signal you get out of the other end. RG59 has more loss then RG6. Again I would check and see what you are getting directly off of the antenna and improve that situation (if it needs to) first.
