Has WTMJ4-1 Signal Strengh changed?

Hi, I have been have a lot of picture break up of a couple of shows I have watched on NBC recently.  At first I thought it was NBC having weather problems with the feed out of NY, but tonight I noticed an issue with Motorweek on PBS (though this may be a tape feed issue) so I checked my attenna strength and now I think I may have a signal problem.

I live in Whitefish Bay, and my attenna is positioned pointing half way between the transmitters for ABC/CBS and those for all the rest, as for my house, the two main transmitters are 90 degrees apart from each other.

Now when I originally set it all up in the fall, I got consistent signal strength of 90-95 on my HR10-250 HD Tivo.  Checking last night, I found that my NBC (Ch 28) is now bouncing around 70-80.  All other stations are still around the 90-95 mark apart from CBS (ch46) which I also note has dropped slightly to 85-90.

Has ch 28 dropped its signal strength recently, or might there be other reasons for the sudden signal loss.  Incidentally, my antenna is positioned in the atic and it solidly screwed down to the joists so I can not imagine that it moved.

Watching NBC the last couple of nights I have not noticed an picture breakup, so I guess the problem could be weather related out of New York (as I understand NBC has no redundant backup if the HD feed drops due to weather).  The two programs we had problems with were My Name is Earl and Surface from a couple of weeks back.  Anybody else experiance similar drop outs?

Thanks
Kerry.

Hi Kerry,

Over the past several nights (until the weather got colder Saturday), "skip" was occurring. I was getting stations from Green Bay, Madison, Milwaukee, WI and South Bend, IN. Oh, did I mention I'm 60 miles west of Chicago?

See if today (Sunday) with nicer weather brings any changes. Also, be advised
that snow/ice on your roof brings down your signal some as well.

kjnorman

I was wondering if tropospheric ducting might be the issue (I am assuming this is what you mean by "skip").

Does anyone know what other channels in the great lakes area broadcast on channel 28?

You would also need a list of all the current analog ch 28 stations this will also
cause a major problem because it is still RF and your receiver will not know what
to lock onto.

SEAN @ TMJ do you know what the new tv spectrum will be?  uhf only or VHF high band and UHF.  Some confussion on this with many web sites out there.

What would be your source for this info (reliable).

Thanks

Brad

The final DTV channels are 2-51.

See the FCC web site:

Sean,

This was extremely helpful although is it possible low band 2-6 could be eliminated
yet by the FCC.

Second:  Why would there be antenna manufacturer web sites that are stating
that UHF will be the only source for DTV as this is not correct if what you stated is true, which I believe it is.

Seems as though there is alot of misinformation out there yet!

Found FCC docket No. mm87-268 or report no. 97-9 which states at the end of the transition they could change it to 7-51 or 2-46, so is this true or was this changed?  This docket was dated 4/3/97.

Any additional help would be greatly appreciated. :D
