I usually only record local channels... so might as well just use the PC as my DVR.  Besides.. I need to save some money so I can move out next year.

My total bill comes to:

30% commercials / 70% programming (my rough estimate)

$48/month gets me HBO/HD, PBS/HD, Wealth TV/HD, Discovery HD Theater, and far more channels than I could ever watch, eg: ESPN, CNN, TLC, HGTV, History Channel, Discovery Digital Package, etc.  And, I get most west coast feeds in case I miss a show.  A few dozen music channels are also included.  Finally, I can scan the skies for wild feeds which are too numerous to mention.  I've been a big dish user since '84 & 4DTV owner for 4 years.  My programmer is National Programming Service.  They allow me to subscribe, ala carte, to many other channels as well (Game Show Network and Outdoor Living Network) for about a buck a month each.  When I watch network TV (rarely), I use the antenna on my roof for Milwaukee/Chicago stations.

D*'s lowest package and OTA for locals and HD is plenty for my faminly.  And only one (the original) '97 vintage satellite receiver.  If the kids want to watch something different than me, they've learned to deal with loosing out.  No DVR's/Tivo stuff either.  Although I would consider a DVR as long as there's no monthly service charge.  I'm also the kind of guy who doesn't understand the cell phone craze.

It's not that I can't afford it, I simply cannot justify it. ;)

Well see, it's a phone... that you can use anywhere, by utilizing magical invisible rays that fly thru the air!

That's how I feel about paying a monthly fee to watch TV. OTA has plenty for me.

There's just too many shows on cable that I love. :D

Oh don't get me wrong, I own a cell phone.  It's a Tracfone I paid $40. for 4 years ago.  It sits in my glove compartment for weeks at a time waiting for the moment I truly need to use it.  Which is very rare. :)

Funny story. (Slightly off-topic)

Last night I had a sleep study at the Sleep Wellness Institute. During my previous visit, they were showing off the facility and the HD plasma screens in each room and the fact that they provided Direc TV to the rooms.

Well last night while getting ready for the study, I turned on the plasma and saw... "Searching for Signal"

They nurse was so apologetic (and super-super cute   ). She said that was the first time in years that it has gone out. I think she was more upset than me, since now she had nothing else to watch except me sleeping

I thought it was funny more than annoying. I wasn't really planning on watching anything, I just wanted to compare picture quality.

Either way, my first experience with satellite wasn't great :D

Oh yeah? Sounds like your first experience with satellite caused a cute nurse to give you lots of extra attention you wouldn't have gotten otherwise.. Sounds like a GOOD first experience to me.  ;)

Quote from: MathWiz579I've got the TWC Digipic 2000, HBO package, HD package.  Right now I'm paying about $75 a month for that + 1 HD-DVR and 1 regular DVR + cable modem service due to a TWC billing error.  Normally I pay a little over $100 a month.

$100 for all that?  How did you get such a deal as we have Digipic 2000 with HBO & Showtime, one HD-DVR, one HD converter, and Roadrunner and it is closer to $140/month

Mark Strube

"...due to a TWC billing error."

That's how. :bang:  :guns:

MathWiz579

I think I mis-typed my earlier post.  I actually have the DigiPic 1000 instead of the 2000, and the rest of the stuff I mentioned, for just over $100 a month.  Still was a good deal.  I got it b/c I was switching from Direct TV and talked to a customer service rep. in a special department who was able to give me a decent deal.

MathWiz579: I thought when you mentioned just the HBO not Showtime (for HD)
that you only had the DigiPic 1000 plus that one premium.

But did you know, that if you add the Showtime package (which includes Showtime HD) you only add $5 to your bill and if you have RoadRunner (if you desire to) the DigiPic 2000  reduces your bill on that $5 back again, making it sorta "free" for those Showtime channels....just a an FYI here.

We used to have Digipic 1000 with HBO and then Showtime additionally. Then I discovered if we got Digipic 2000 (which includes 2 premiums, so I chose HBO & Showtime) the HBO and Showtime onDemand channels are included! Another nice little bonus of having the 2000 package.

If Digipic 4000 included ALL the premium movie channels (Starz & Encore included) and the sports package, we'd probably have that instead.
