WDJT (58-1) Audio Dropouts

Well, since there's already some threads started for the other stations, I thought I start one for 58.

There have been numerous audio drop outs during Survivor tonight.  These have been longer than those on 12 and 18.  When the sound does come back, it's preceded by a loud static spurt.

In addition, the sound mixture seems to be mixed up.  The left channel has little sound, and dialog that should be coming from the center channel is also mixed into the right.

I'm listening to the analog outputs of my OTA receiver.

:(

Multiple drops and subsequent receiver screeches on CBS during Survivor. Can't check until 10PM to see if it was local or national upconvert.

To make matters worse someone at CBS58 is continually flipping the switch during programming from local -> national -> local instead of testing during national commercials and creating even more drops.

You guys need to chill out survivor isn't in HD to begin with you're not missing much.. I think they're working on something more important.. give them a few days maybe you'll be happy then.

But it is shown on the national HD upconvert just like all of the remaining CBS national 4:3 content. It's superior to the local upconvert and I prefer it because of the black levels and lack of garbage at the top of the picture. Don't enjoy having the switch flipped during the program and there's no reason to keep doing it. They did the same thing during Big Brother this summer. Although I prefer the national, don't switch to it or away from it in the middle of programming. Please wait until commercials.

There were probably 15-20 drop outs during Survivor.

Yes, you're correct, Survivor isn't in HD.

That said, it's very disruptive to miss 3-8 seconds of dialog multiple times during a show, any show.  It's also disheartening to have the wife question the value of an HD receiver when she's missing what's going on on the show.

This forum is a great way for viewers to share technical problems with each other (to verify that it's not a problem on their own end) and with the actual stations (for those willing to participate).

To simply write-off SD digital TV glitches as unimportant or unworthy of attention seems counter to the goals of this forum.

Which is why I've made these audio dropout threads stickies now... seems to be a bigger problem lately for some reason. :(

Great idea.  Hopefully, you'll be able to retire them shortly.

The dropouts occured when swtiching from local upconvert to national upconvert which had no audio.

Example at 14:00 of Survivor

Both the local and national upconvert were flagged for DD 5.1. CSI and WAT were just DD.

I'm not saying that the problem should not be posted.  However you shouldn't necessarily group this event with the WISN events which are every day occurences.  Pesonally I don't remember the last time they had major audio issues on 58.  There were reasons why the drop out happened and I know they are working on a solution.  BTW it may happen again Friday (hopefully not).

Isn't that the truth!  My wife complains when I switch a program over to the HD source.   Comments like "What did you do that for?" and "It was just fine before you did that!" are followed by further complaints whenever the audio disappears, or the picture freezes up.  Her comments like "I don't see any difference!" don't help on the upconverted sources either.

HD and digital are the way of the times now, and as the high tech audience grows, so will dissatisfaction with presentations.  I can see the advertisers becoming unsatisfied with the presentations if the audio holes, freezlies, switching errors,  and glitches aren't reduced to the levels we are accustomed to on SD.  Remember, the advertisers are the ones who ultimately pay for what we see on most programs!

No dropout switching to the national feed tonight.

It's flagged as DD 5.1 too.

(Didn't get to check what's actually going on at each speaker during local broadcast prior because that is improperly flagged as DD 5.1 just like last night during Survivor)

WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our local CBS is now in 5.1!

I've checked... there's no dialogue or sfx bleed to the front stereo channels, and I've heard significant subwoofer action... true 5.1!!!!

WAY TO GO WDJT!! FINALLY! {fart}

HD college football in 5.1 is awesome (not the game, but PQ and sound). :)
Thanks, WDJT. Better later then never. :)
