DD 5.1 mix for CSI on TWC?

I'm relatively new to the HD world (only been HD-capable for a month), so maybe this has already been answered.  Sorry if it has...

I'm getting all my HD programming through TWC and one of the new S/A 8300HD DVR's.  When I record the new episodes of CSI every Thur night, the audio is just 2.0 stereo, rather then the 5.1-ch mix.  Why is this?  I called out to my friend in LA who gets his HD over-the-air, and he confirmed that he gets the 5.1 mix.  Can someone enlighten me as to what's going on here?  Is this specific to TWC or WDJT-HD?  I've never watched it "live" - it's always been a DVR recording.  This shouldn't matter, should it?  I haven't had any issues with recording the 5.1 mix on other channels like INHD and the like.

BTW - yes, I made sure my receiver was set correctly.  Activating surround mode on my receiver puts me in DPL II mode, which is consistent with how it handles a stereo signal.

I've been reading all kinds of rave reviews of how great CSI's surround mix is.  I'd sure like to enjoy it!

You will NOT get CBS in Dolby Digital 5.1 passthru from CBS58 in Milwaukee because they do not have the equipment like the local FOX, NBC and ABC stations have here.

Recently I emailed "CBS58" for an update from what, TWO years ago(?), when they were at least "guessing" they might be doing it and so far I have not received any answer back. :(

Your DVR is doing fine.
Allowing your  A/V receiver to do a DPL II (or Neo:6) for surround processing and it should sound a lot better. It isn't DD5.1, but better than stereo.

Milwaukee, at that time as I understand it, was not in the top 25 stations to get equipment for DD5.1 passthru.

Seems as though the "Tiffany Network" is short of getting its act together to its affiliates or CBS58 just doesn't care anymore, IMO.

Thanks - I was pretty sure it wasn't user error.   :)

Oh, well, screw CBS58 then.  I know I could watch/listen in DPL II or DTS Neo:6, but I just got done reading an article in a recent "Sound & Vision", where they were talking about the intentional things that they do with the surround mix for CSI, and it just wouldn't be the same.  Those pseudo-surround schemes can be nice at times, but when someone is actually spending the time to do something artistic with the mix, that vision is totally lost.

Here's a note to anyone who may be reading this from CBS58 - I'm actually looking for new programming to enjoy on my new HD rig.  Since you've decided to not keep up with the other affiliates with regards to passing through a DD 5.1 mix when it's available, your shows are now out of the running unless it's a Packers game or the Masters next spring.   :p

This got me thinking... what's the next-closest CBS affiliate that has 5.1, and what kind of eqipment would I need to receive it OTA?

CBS 58 is working on DD 5.1 hopefully it will be soon.  CBS sends their signal in such a way that requires a lot of post processing..  if it's not done right you're better off with what you got.. give them a break when they're ready then you'll have it.

See? Satisfy your customers!! They'd get more viewers if they installed the 5.1 equipment (including myself). Maybe we need to keep calling/emailing them to show that there's a good amount of interest in this, and then maybe they'll get on the ball.

I had to call CONSTANTLY to get American to move their a**es on contacting Sony about my warranty television repair. These people don't care until the customers show them that THEY care. Then it's an issue.

WISC 3 in Madison broadcasts shows in DD5.1 I believe.  I'm not sure if it's possible to get around here though...

I get WISC 3 from Madison great here on the east side of Waukesha (Buchner Park area) with about 95% up-time (usually better.  Received it with a UHF-only antenna in the attic and now with my rooftop.  They are DD 5.1 but they also stretch SD content which some people don't like.

Interesting... I see they carry a UPN station as well... which RF channel is that on?

I'm not able to check my STB now but according to the according to the Madison HDTV site it is on 50.  Link to Madison HDTV on this sites homepage.  Not a very active BB.
