probably like everyone on this forum - I've been pleasantly impressed with what a difference just a few 10's of thousands of WATS makes Smilie. Other than 6 DTV - which I think is still the local OTA HD/TV joke  and TV-30 - is everyone else now operating at full licensed power? In other words are they no longer operating under FCC STA's?

In Green Bay, all 7 network stations have been at full

Digital power for nearly a year.     That means their

tower & transmitter equipment has been installed &

functioning. Six of the 7 network stations have HD

network pass thru capability working....  IF the

engineering HD switch is thrown....    Both Sat & Sun

I had to call the Green Bay NBC-HD news Dept

to get a runner to make both the Busch & Nextel NASCAR

race a superb HD Program offering.

Pending is the GBay WB-DT local network channel going

to HD pass thru capability about Oct 15th.  Then 7 of 7 Digital

network channels here have HD capability. We have no PAX.

The only stations in Milwaukee that are not full power are WVTV, WCGV, WITI and WVCY.  Of couse channel 49 has built a DTV yet.

Can anyone explain why the networks are so frequently missing the HD broadcasts.  Why when they receive a HD feed do they not automatically put out the broadcast in HD?  Why is this apparently a manual process?

GBK

probably because it's cheaper that way.  Until more people request service in HD they won't do anything.  It's not a knock on them since it cost lots of money for HD equip.

Automation equipment is rather pricey and some stations just haven't pulled out the checkbook yet.  However Fox6 being corp. owned has pulled out the big bucks including a "Splicer".  This allows them to run the Network Feed and just splice in the local spots and adds without having to switch from the HD to SD encoders.

Fox may have the equipment, but they have the worst in/outs of all the networks. The audio between the show and commercials spill over onto each other all the time. It's pretty much impossible for a person to do what they try to do.

The Wiz is the worst at switching, period.

Aside from WITI, when will the other three above stations be at full power?  I assume the rules for them are different because they aren't one of the big 4 networks?

Regarding WCGV & WVTV
We have until July 1st, 2006. Everything is in place and ready to go except the IOT's (output tubes) and of course the higher power bill. Plans are currently in progress.

That sounds great!  Thanks for the update.

WCGV isn't full power? I have never had problem receiving this station in Sheboygan County.
I receive WVTV 75% of the time, WITI a few times & WVCY never.

Den, would you happen to know which tower Green Bay's WB WIWB is using because I have never received this station in Sheboygan County.

I also occasionally receive Mayville's WWRS.

The 7 Green Bay Network Digital Channels use 3 new Towers:

   North Tower (Scrays Hill) has both ABC-DT 23 & PBS-DT 42

3.7 miles South/SE of Scrays Hill is the

  Middle Tower has both NBC-DT 41 & UPN-DT 59

1.7 miles South of the Middle Tower is

South Tower which has three (3) DT Stations
         CBS-DT 56
         FOX-DT 51
         WB-DT  21

The new Towers were built with cost sharing  in mind.

I believe the South Tower has the capability to

share the same antenna & power for the different

channel frequencies.     Not sure if antenna can

handle 2 or 3 frequencies simultaneously.

I will try to see if I can pull WB14 in down here.  Once you hit Manitowoc cty
and north of there it starts to come in pretty consistently.

Den Mayer

Be careful...   GBay WB 14 is Analog

                         GBay WB 21 is Digital.....

Not to be greedy for info but is that about the same time frame for HD on WCGV?
