sandbagger

Hi everyone.
My name is sandbagger, I'm from Perth, Australia.
I have a wireless network with 2 pcs, 1 pda, and a wireless router. I will soon be adding a server to share files and run bittorrent to free up my "general use" pc. When I build my server I want it to have a HDTV tuner card that can share it's video stream over the network.
Does anyone know if this is possible? Any advice would be appreciated.

"For digital television, including digital satellite and cable TV, DVD and HDTV, the higher the bit rate, the more data that is processed and, typically, the higher the picture quality. The DVD format allows up to 9.8Mbps, while HDTV requires 19.25Mbps for full- bandwidth transmission". This is a quote from Cnet.com. It sounds technically possible, but for some reason I think there may be more to it than just the bandwidth needed. It's also nice to see someone from out of town posting. WAY OUT OF TOWN!

It can work. Fox hardly ever gets to 8Mbps, so that's a guide to what will definitely work.

I think you can only watch live TV on the computer with the card, but if you're recording, you can watch the recorded video on other computers.  I wouldn't try it on anything less than 802.11g.  I've tried DVDs over 802.11b and they just don't work.

wireless b/g never achieve the advertised speed of either 11 mbps or 54mbps..  the g version hover at about 13-19 mbps average which wouldn't be enough to stream hdtv.. the a version is a little higher but shorter distance most likely due to less interference from phones etc. your best bet for streaming hdtv is a hard line 100mbps that should give you enough bandwidth.

The 802.11g 54Mbit wireless AP's are good enough to stream standard DVD content, provided your not running any encryption on your wireless network.  I've done this.  BUT as soon as you secure your wireless network with encryption, FORGET IT.  Encryption will SAP 25 to 30 % of your network speed.  Standard DVD vieo will not play without jerkyness when encryption is used on a 54 Mbit AP.  However a 2x 802.11g 108 Mbit AP may be able to handle it.  As soon as OfficeMAX has rebate sales on those I'm going to get one and try it.  There is some video streaming software for windows and LINUX  that is shareware that I know works for streaming audio and video over a network using a satellite DVB cards, but I'm not sure if it works for the PAL or ATSC cards.  If I remeber the name of the software I will post back with a link.  Or someone else may know the software I am thinking of.  It was written by some French collage students.  Never mind I remembered and here is the link  http://www.videolan.org/streaming/  Hope this helps in at least you get some ideas. :)
