Ok - so this is what i have evolved in terms of antennaa ( yeah plural):
Both are under the roof (inside the attic) both aligned per antennaweb.org.:
Winegard GS-2200 - this is the Sensar VHF/UHF with built in pre-amp ( around 15.5 dB of gain) - this feeds four TV's.. Cable is RG-6QS with snap n seals . This is only being used to feed the Analog TV's .  Excellent analog reception except for 41 and 44 - which are snowy -un-watchable.
Channel Master 4228 - fed direct into the Antenna input of a Hughes E-8/86. Cable is RG-6QS with snap and seals throughout..

Tested both setup[s for digital TV antena  performance here are the results:

   so what's this all come down to? I now get excellent analog performance on the Winegard and get all the digital channels except 18-1 - which frankly I can live with since I've got the Winegard coming in to the RF jack on my TV and I f I want to watch 18 or non-time shifted 10 or 36 - it's just two remote  buttons away.
      Some things to keep in mind: 1.) I'm losing between half (3 dB and three quarters (6 dB)  of my signal into building structure - I rent = so that's just the way things are.. 2.) the Winegard version of the Sensar ( GS-1100) used with a distribution amp might work very marginally better im my installation - it's what i had around - tried it and don't intend to change it.  For attic installations I'm pretty impressed with the Winegard Sensar - I'll be installing a couple of these at much closer range to antenna alley this weekend - one at about 3 miles and the other just under 5  miles  -both in attics - will let you know what the results are with these installations..The effects of multipath show up as high Bit Error Ratios ( BER) - which can go a long way towards explaining why a antenna with less gain for a particular channel may still give better  performance than a higher gain antenna that is having multi-path or other noise/distortion problems that degrade the bit stream..
   What ir t comes down to is I installed a 4228 in order to get acceptable DTV from 6!  Is Buffy worth it? Hard to know but she sure annoys my girlfriend.

The show is done and all seasons are on DVD. So, probably not unless Buffy is your other girlfriend's name.
