Ok, I guess I had my terminology mixed up.  I assumed that SD was standard digital (when it really means Standard Definition!!) and that it applied to the 500+ channels.  When in fact SD is just using the box on an SDTV and viewing the 1-499 channels.

On by HDTV I am able to view 500+ channels that are SD (black bars on the side, i.e. local news) and use the cable box to zoom and fill the screen.

Thanks for the help.  I will go ahead and get another 8300 box for the downstairs.  I did notice that the analog (1-99) and digital (100+) pictures are better with this box.

Thanks for the clarifications!

Now you've got it:

SD box on the SDTV (starndard definition tv sets)

HD box on the HDTV (high definition tv sets)

As you found out, you can put the HD box on an SDTV. It will allow you to watch HD channels on an SDTV although they are still in SD and you have to see the bars and you can't make the bars go away. You also may have a larger hard drive, but I'm not sure if that is true anymore, it used to be.
