Quote from: jfrancourHow long did it take any of you to get your number transferred over to Vonage or any other VoIP?

I didnt swich my number to vonage b/c I had already been without a land line for a few months before starting up with vonage.  However, I think it took a few weeks to get the number ported.  I think they issued him a  temporary number but he just had people call his cell phone rather than have people use the temporary number.

Vonage said a minimum of 20 (business) days but it took about 37 for me. I set up my TDS number to automatically Fwd callers to my temp VoIP number so I didn't have two lines and Vonage paid for my service after I started to complain but I was just wondering if anyone else had any problems with it.

I'm at 15 days and stilll waiting.  Here's what I did:

Ordered a regular Vonage line with a new number, a fax line with my current fax number and a softphone with my main business number. I have the softphone set to transfer all calls to the new line if it loses internet connection (i.e. Laptop turned off)

When a person calls my business number, if my laptop is on, it rings there. If it is off it rings at the office.

In the meantime I set my SBC line to transfer all calls to the Vonage temporary number. That meant I had to pay SBC extra money to get the call forwarding service  :guns:

Today I switched from cable internet to SBC Yahoo DSL.  I was paying $41.95 per month for cable Earthlink via TWC.  SBC Yahoo DSL is $14.95 per month for one year, and the first 3 months are free if you show them your old cable internet bill.

My download speeds with Cable Internet were 4.6 Mbps

With DSL it is 1.29 Mbps

Upload is 331 Kbps with DSL and I don't remember my Cable upload speed.

Overall, DSL seems fast enough, and I think it's worth the switch considering the cost savings.  At least for what I do on the internet DSL seems adequate.

Warner Cable in SE WI's upstream is 384k.  I thought DSL was symetrical?

Tested on Charter using SBC Yahoo DSL Pro ($24.95/month).  No TWC or RR up hear in West Bend, so not too many other options.

I would switch too if they have naked DSL.

Land line + DSL is actually costing more than cable for me.

How it can be? Land lin $27 (unlimited calls) + DSL $14.95 = $41.95 + tax,
Cable RR $41.95.
And what about phone? Cell?

My Land line bill is $13.27 (no long distance and $.04/ call) but hey that's what cell phones are for.  $13.27 + 24.95 (for Pro) + misc. fees $2.98 = $41.20

$13.27 + $14.95 (for Express) + misc fees $2.98 = $31.20

I say unless you really need the extra speed, why not make the switch to DSL and save some $$$.

I am moving in Sept and pretty upset that I will be loosing my roadrunner cable. I am currently enjoying 5mpbs down and 512up. Unfortunatly even though I am moving to their service area my home is not serviceable and I am forced to switch to SBC Yahoo DSL. I am fine with dsl but I will see a pretty dramatic decrease in speed and for what I use the net for, that is not cool :)

QuoteI thought DSL was symetrical?

SDSL is symetrical and very expensive. ADSL which is the norm is much like cable in that you get pretty hefty download speeds and meager upload speeds.

I have been using vonage for 2 1/2 years and could not be happier. It was a tremendous relief when we were able to finally say our phone bill will not be x amount no matter what.  Infact, with vonage, I have seen a decrease in my bill twice!

Ok, still on my $29 per month and will change to $34 for another year after the 6 months at $29.

A basic line is $13. What about long distance calls, Local calls, Unpublished number, CallerID, etc? If you are using a cellphone to make your long distance calls. You'll have to add that into your equation too.

Right now I have all you can eat VOIP for $16 + $34 (cable)= $50

I haven't had a land line for almost 2 years. If price difference is greater than $10. I might switch.  Let's not forget the download speed for the $15 plan is about third of cable. There are times that extra speed helps a lot.
