all satellite systems get locals OTA. the local channels are integrated into the APG (on DirecTV at least) just like every other channel. So you select channels in the guide the exact same way. You can also tune directly to the channels by entering their dashed channel number (6-1).

Aside from the slight numbering difference the inclusion of local OTA DTV channels is seamless on all satellite setups. as for the dash-notation.. enterting 6-1 isn't any different than entering 506.

You can also get NBC and CBS in HDTV from DirecTV if you qualify (live outside of OTA reception area).  FOX in HDTV will be next according to DirecTV. DirecTV also offers premium channels like HBO and Showtime and PPV in HDTV. Was nice watching the Sunday night packer game on HDTV from ESPN.

Actually, you receive NBC & CBS hd if you live in an area that is covered by an O & O station.

If you live outside an OTA reception area you would need to apply for a waiver thru  directv with your local stations.  These waivers apply to the SD national feeds.  I am not sure if these waivers apply to the HD feeds yet.

The only O & O network we get in the Milwaukee market is FOX-6 which we will get the D* HD feed when it comes on if you have D* obviously.

Well,

D* gave me CBS channels 80 and 81 HDTV even though I got OTA CBS (channel 58-1) here in Hartford because my new HD TiVo can't record channel 58-1 properly as everyone knows. So, they flipped a switch and I now get CBS HD over the satellite.

I think that your situation may be an exception more than the rule.

My post on the D* HD reception rules still stands.  If you get reception because of the Tivo recording issues thats great but it is not how they are supposed to do it or how D* said they were handling the national HD feeds.

I have had D* service for many years and have found that D* makes rules as it goes, depending upon who you happen to be talking to at that moment. Before I got the HD TiVo, I had inquired about getting HD network feeds off the satellite so I wouldn't have to install a big antenna, and was told those feeds don't exist due to insufficient space on the satellites. Two months later with the HD TiVo problem with 58-1 they had those feeds all along. Too much "politics" involved with tv availability these days.

The HD feeds were added this summer.  They increased the bandwidth with the lauch of the new satellite in april.

They will also be launching two more sats early next year as well.  You can check the   latest news forum and Greg L has a few posts about what we can hope to look for in the way of increased HD channels with these two sats being launched in early 2005.

I would also expect a few more HD channels when NFL sunday ticket (HD) is done at the end of the regular season.  That will be enough for about 5-7 HD channels at least.
