I just moved and have always had time warner.  I just moved to a charter cable area.  I signed up with the HDTV package.  I never ever had a problem with time warner.  Anyways, I was watching HD all day yesterday and noticed that on my widescreed HDTV that I was still getting black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.  All HD channels and all the other non hd channels filled the full screen.  I know it is no tv setting change, becuase my tv doesnt let you change the format in HD and with time warner it filled the whole screen.  Time warner receivers had 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i options along with 4x3 and 16x9.  How come charter receivers dont give you these options???

Please help I am very frustrated.

Unless there's someone here who has Charter, and happens to know exactly what cable box you're using, I'm not sure how we can help you. It sounds like the box is configured for a 4:3 television. Are you even sure it's an HDTV box?? Give Charter a call.

I have contacting charter and they are useless!!!  I completely agree that the receiver is not configured correctly.  It is for sure HDTV receiver, but they have no setting options for screen size and format.  Does anyone know for charter boxes how to change these settings.  I know this:

it is an HD box
My tv is set up correctly
the current picture is in HD.
picture is more of a 2.35:1 format instead of 1.76:1

It would help if you could give us the box's brand name and model number.

Oh also.... doesn't the manual give you any info?

Assuming you have the Motorola DCT 6200:

User settings menu: With the box off, hit Menu on your remote.

Diagnostic menu: With box on, power it off and immediately (within 2 seconds) hit the OK/Enter button on your remote.

Go into the user settings menu and make sure that "TV TYPE" is set to 16:9

In your original post you said that, "I was watching HD all day yesterday and noticed that on my widescreen HDTV that I was still getting black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. All HD channels and all the other non hd channels filled the full screen."

If all HD channels and all the non-HD channels are filling your screen, then what are you trying to watch when you're having the problem? I don't understand...

Any further ?'s let us know!   ;)

Doesn't this belong in technical issues?
