Other than me saying "stand in line"! Here it goes....

We have had this thread for a long time, since WB18 started to (finally) transmitting in HD OTA. Many in this forum get it OTA and maybe, it you can, get it, too. I can't due to topography and location, spousal factor, etc...and I would want it, too, though.:(

Time Warner Cable is a unit of Time Warner, Inc., who owns Warner Bros. TV, hence "THe WB".
However, since WB18 is NOT owned by Warner Bros., it does whatever it wants...especially since it is owned by the Sinclair Broadcasting Group along with UPN24.:D

TWC and SBG have fought and we lost....SBG wants TWC to pay for its digital channels and TWC doesn't do that with any of its other HD locals, it claims, so we lose out. Got it? :bang:

How SBG thinks it can charge for spectrum it got free from us, "the government of the people" when it goes into a cable system is beyond me..!
Wait until the analogue spectrum is given back in exchange for that digital one , the ones SBG got for free...then maybe, like was said awhile ago, the "must carry" will take effect and TWC and SBG will come to terms....but until then...

Check some of the other locations in the TWC system, like I believe the Ohio one, where they got shafted out of what looks like ABC HD and FOX HD, so we in Milwaukeeland are out of luck, just like they are!
If you want Smallville in HD, check out its  beginning shows on HDNET. Me? I go watch with friends with a decent antenna facing Chicago's WGN-HD...forget me ever watching the SBG channels if they want to play that....game.

borghe

technically sinclair isn't charging for the spectrum. they are charging for the carriage. the spectrum is still 100% free.

gparris

Technically on a hair they are not charging ME for the spectrum, but the cable company I rely on for the digital signal.

TWC: Emphasis on "cable company I rely on for digital signal"! Hence, the reason you have cable to begin with, so charge me and put it in a digital tier....or something.

Sinclair: Smallville looked especially good from CHICAGO last night!
(take a hint):guns:

borghe

the cable company isn't entitled to free retransmission agreements.

I'm just saying your anger always seems to be focused on Sinclair. While I don't agree with what they are asking, the reality of the situation is that they ARE offering the signal. It is solely TWC who is directly responsible for WB18 not being on cable.

Both Sinclair and TWC are at fault for not delivering HD product.

If TWC really wanted to be the cable company and act as a "one-solution for everything", including all local HD channels, like it attempts to advertise :
( "15 HD Channels" in a recent TV ad),
then it will have to cough up the cash for the WB18 HD..
...and (soon) UPN24 HD..
...or it has failed its subscribers on the reason for having cable to begin with.
Now, more than ever, what with increased HD programming, and TWC's emphasis on "Local HD Channels" over satellite with their ads, must they carry these other HD locals, or stop the ads.:o

Thank you.

I just made a similar post over on AVS, though I don't know if I've ever made it here before, so here goes.

Relating to TWC and Sinclair, the loser is you, the cable viewer. While that sucks, let's face it, you really have no control over the outcome. So you can either sit here and complain that TWC and Sinclair can come to an agreement sometime before Must Carry goes into effect for DTV, or you can do something about it. What is that you might ask?

Ebay. There are HDTV tuners going on ebay every day for $150 or less, many going for under $100. There are buy it now tuners going for $100-150. Does your TV have an HD tuner built into it? There you go.

Over the years we have developed a pretty severe reliance on pay-tv to bring signals into our house. Analog television was usually an incredible hassle to get going, and even once you got it the best you could, many times it was still inferior to the signal you could get from cable hooked up to your cable ready tv.

But with DTV that has all changed. Gone are the days with too strong of a signal causing ghosting. Gone are the days or RF interference causing snow on the screen.  When my antenna was installed earlier this year, it was installed in such a way that I was getting OTA analog at excellent strength and it still didn't look as good as DirecTV. But all of that is changed now. With prices coming down on used tuners, and with more TV sets startig to include built-in tuners, if you can get a decent signal it will be solid and perfect every time.

I guess all I'm saying is, if you want WB18 now, don't say "Well, TWC doesn't have it so I guess I'm SOL." Go to ebay and but a tuner for under $100, or even better if your TV has a built-in tuner, and get those signals right now and watch WB in HD immediately.

Eventually Sinclair and TWC will work out an agreement, but I hope if anything that at least one thing is learned from this. These signals are still available 100% for free OTA. Except for WITI and WDJT, there isn't a single person in the metro area who shouldn't be able to pick up every single channel in perfect high definition quality with little more than some rabbit ears or a RS DBT (tucked away of course so as not to be laughed at for that modern work of art. :p )

Ok, stepping down from the soapbox. Just wanted to mention it to all of you TWC subscribers who are tired of waiting for TWC and Sinclair to come to an agreement. You have options. There is no reason you should have to miss another single show off of the WB.

Quoteif your TV has a built-in tuner, and get those signals right now and watch WB in HD immediately.

Perhaps, you just probably can't watch all the other channels, because they don't have enough of a percentage of CEO David Smith's used car lot powering the signal and are blown away by their competition.

gparris

Imagine buying a car from his lot to begin with...does it mean free HD channels on your cable system?

Joseph S

Quotedoes it mean free HD channels on your cable system?

He can't afford that, he's too busy paying lawyers and court fees for each of the times he's been arrested in MD and TX for soliciting prostitutes. :D

gparris

Well, if that is true, than they should do some good PR and offer their HD channels for the same price the other locals offer them for...whatever that is (free?).

I still don't see why the cable company has to ask permission for something it can get OTA, too, and just send into their system, like the analogue signals...do we really have to wait until the analogue channels are taken back to get WB18 (UPN24 HD soon) on cable...in what, 2006?

You really think they are going to take back the analog in 2006. No way.

The first goal was 2006 for all digital to up and running, not to have analog turned off. The analog won't go off for at least 10 years would be my guess.

gparris

Yes, let's all go to alternate PLAN B:

Either Time Warner Cable and Sinclair play nice...

OR

We all wait until Directv (who will pay) has WB 18 in HD!

Then I will, once and for all, dump TWC like a bad habit!
:D

Me? I go to the HD Tivo down the road and play nice with my best friend with the OTA source for WB HD (and UPN HD) pointed towards Chicago...why should it be Milwaukee, Sinclair?:guns:

For the millionth time gparris threatens to dump TWC

Like you never threaten to do anything? :guitar:

Cable must not get all laid back as this is what they did before, hence, the birth of satellite...then they started moving (a bit).

It wasn't the millionth time, just (f)actually, a few times, like when their service reps aren't trained, they play games with subscribers, fight with Sinclair, say they have 15 HD channels and really more like 14 with a temporary one (531) or even mismanage their website pages.
Right now, TWC is sitting back all pleased with itself for (finally) delivering ESPN-HD and won't add any more until next year, perhaps.

Some folks I know have to have both cable and satellite just to get what they want. Heck, I used to do it, but it got sort of expensive.:(

One neighbour of mine has 3 dishes on their roof top (but no antennas) for all three sat services...looks like a mini-backlot of a cable company on his roof...their choice/expense, not mine.

I would think/expect one provider should offer all or at least close to the channels you would desire, without the hassle of having more than one service provider...so some of us try to  complain and hope it is heard by some provider who cares.
(Then go with that provider.):)
