SA 8000HD Audio Question

Last night I tried hooking up my SA 8000HD to an older Kenwood receiver (Pro Logic, no Dolby Digital).  I used the Audio Out on the back of the cable box to the Video1 on the Receiver.  Worked as expected.  However, the TV's (Mitts 55413) speakers would not work.

I was hoping to use the Tv's speakers as a center channel with my Athena Bookshelf's as mains.  I don't have the room to get crazy with surround sound, but was looking for a little boost in the sound quality.

What am I missing to get this to work?

Thanks,

Greg

Did you hook up a pair of audio outs on the cable box to the TV?

I'm using the jacks labeled "audio out" to run to the Receiver.  Which jacks should I run to the TV?

I'm thinking that I maybe need to run another pair of cables from my receiver to my tv?

There is also a digital audio out or an optical audio out on the back of the reciever, run this to your TV or receiver (if your reciever is capable, then you would need to run the audio out to your tv) and you should be good to go...

No digital inputs on the receiver.  I don't think the TV would have any either.

I am considering upgrading to a new receiver, but that is probably a few months away.

If your TV has Audio In and Audio out jacks I would think you could run from the SA reciever to the TV then go from the TV to your receiver???

Hmmm, that sounds interesting.

I referenced the MItts User Manual and this is what it says:

Monitor Out
The Monitor Output sends the TV audio and Video signals (excluding component video, DTV video and Monitor Link) to an A/V receiver or other equipment.

I think that should work.  I'll try running the SA Audio out to the TV and using the Monitor out back to my receiver.

Thanks for the input.

You could also buy a pair of splitters which will allow you to send the audio to both pieces of equipment. They are usually available at best buy.

This seems to be a lot of work just for the center channel.
If you want outputted sound from a Mits set (I have one) you normally have to turn the set's speakers off to get sound from the audio out from the back of the set to into your A/V receiver. Once you do that, I assume that with your Mits, the onboard speaker you are trying to use as a center channel will not work!
Why don't you find a cheap center channel speaker and sit it on your Mits as it is deep enough to handle almost anything to begin with and hook it up to the A/V receiver's output center channel and be done with it?
With splitters and such for sound, you only degrade the signal and allow for less output power, anyway.
Then set your A/V receiver to 3.0  Phantom mode, if it has one for the Dolby Prologic (most of them had one).

Again, thanks for the feedback.

Assuming I pick up a center channel (I can get the matching Athena center for ~$150) and hook it up like you say, it sounds like I will still lose the audio capabilities of the Mitts speakers.

I would like the option of listening to either the TV's speakers or the the mini 3.1 surround setup.  Is this possible with this TV (without a splitter).  It seems like this would be a reasonable desire.

If I upgraded my receiver to one with digital inputs (maybe give me a reason to upgrade) and I ran the digital out on the cable box to my receiver and the analog outs to my TV, would that do the trick?  Are all channels digital audio or would I need to run both analog and digital audio to my receiver?
