I watched "Minority Report" this week. It was very poor quality. Your explanation makes since as some movies seem great and others are very poor.

One of the other bad ones I have seen is "American Family" on PBS. That was running at the store when I was buying my HDTV and I almost changed my mind. It was terrible. It looked like they shot the whole thing through an orange filter. It didn't look any better than regular TV.

The stores would sell more HDTV sets if they were more selective on what they displayed. Some of the stuff I have seen was terrible and most of the stores kept showing DVDs and as you know that is only half the quality of a good HDTV program.

Discovery HD on the other hand has some beautiful stuff. I like to turn that channel on when new people come by the house for their first look at my new HDTV.

You're so right. Almost everything on Discovery HD looks fantastic.
The reason is that 98% of Discovery HD's content is HDTV native.
No transfers of 35mm or super 16mm. Or at least, not many.
Most of Discovery's programming is shot 24p to give the "film look" without going though the film transfer. I do the same thing you do, every time someone wants to see HD, I tune to Discovery HD.
