How soon before we can get this on TWC?  I can't justify spending $500 on a STB so I can watch a handful of shows in HDTV.

Kermfrg,

Email both TWC and WISN your request for this to be put on digital cable.

The more requests the sooner they may act.

kermtfrg, if you already have an HD set, the additional cost of an STB is minor.  If you don't, there would be no benefit.

If you're just thinking about it, then I would go for it -- there's more than you think, perhaps 50 hours per week locally, more than you should spend sitting and watching it.    Just don't get a 4:3 set, even though more attractively priced -- you'll regret it later.

Cable will "always" be filled with non high-def material (reruns.  some are still black and white!!!), but some, like ESPN, have announced HD plans for next year.

Personally, I would rather spend a one time $400 and get my network HD free thereafter rather than spend the recurring cable fee for the HD feed. Directv is a better source for HD premium channels and SD cable channels anyway IHO.

Kj has an excellent point here about buying a STB vs. paying the recurring fees to TWC. If you have Digital cable then a STB will pay for itself within the first year. TWC will also have to compress our high bandwidth signal to a lower more usable one for them. So in the long run picking up the channels OTA will give you much better quality.

veyj thanks for the tip. I will let our webmaster know to change the times.

QuoteI can't justify spending $500 on a STB so I can watch a handful of shows in HDTV.

Spend $400 on HiPix, MyHD, or the other HD card and justify it as a HD STB + HD Recorder then.   That was my excuse. Of course there are other costs associated with the computer to HDTV model, but the recording benefit outweighs them in my case.

I dropped cable altogeter for 3/4 of the year too until I just "had" to get HBO and Showtime HD.

A few responses...

I do have a 16x9 HD set now.

I don't think Directv is an option for me.  I want the freedom of putting as many TV's in my house as I can.  From my understanding, to cover my current needs of 4 TV's (only 1 needs the TWC digital box) would cost a lot of upfront money in boxes and dishes and whatever.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. Now I have to convince my wife that we need the STB before the end of January so we can watch the Super Bowl in HD.

Pat

You have two months or so to convince her.  Get busy!

I'm sure you've already noticed that Kenoshans (?) get Chicago quite nicely, so a rotor on an antenna may be advantageous.
