There are many different choices, price ranges, facts, and opinions.  I can give short answers like the Infocus X1 can gotten from Best Buy for $1000 and it's a fantastic value.  I own the Sony HS10 and think it is a steal for around $2300.

If you intend to watch TV in a bright room such as with a picture window during the day, FP may not be the way to go.  Otherwise, you'll probably be happy you checked Front Projectors out.  45 square feet of HD Monday Night Football is amazing.

For the longer answers, spend significant time at //www.avsforum.com.

Tough question.  Lots of good alternatives.  Great strides in home theater projectors have taken place in the last few years.  I have had a Sharp 9000 for a couple of years now and I am very pleased with it.

The way I made my decision (actually lots of decisions, projector type, brand; screen, size, type, brand and on and on) was to spend months reading the AVS Forums.

You will find anwsers to questions you never could have imagined you need to ask.  The site has ten times the information you could ever gather from any of the local stores or home theater companies.  To get the best results from your time and money you need consider quite a few issues.  With a 7' to 12' wide screen and the right sound system it is possible to get a very theater like feel to movies.  Monday Night Packers in HD on this size screen is very impressive.

Go for it.  Good Luck!

The Sharp 9000 has been a staple for moderate priced home theatres for almost 2 years running. It is the probably one of the BEST single chip DLP projectors out there.

I know there is a local retailer selling it for under $5000, brand new. Hmm, I can't remember which one..... who could it be...... who could it be.....

I will check out the fourms, and the equipment listed thanks for all your help. BTY the room is a basement, almost no natrual light, is 20x30 , recroom, hot tub,and theater. thats why I am looking in to projectors,  was looking at 16 x 9 screens, about 750 is the average price I have seen. thanks again.

Budda,

I have a sony vpl-HS10 and it is FANTASTIC!! I have a 100 inch 16:9 screen and sit 14 ft from it. It is so clear, everyone who comes over wants one.

I have demoed it for a number of people, if you are interested, I would show it to you. You will buy it after seeing how good the picture is!

I project it onto a white wall that is framed with drywall columns, which I thought would be temporary, but it is so clear and crisp, I will not put a screen up!

I got mine from NOAV....New Orleans Audio and Video for 2600 with a 4 year warranty.

I think my wife and I might just take you up on that offer. I have a Mits 55" that I use and would continue to use for regular TV after the possible purchase of a front projector, but I really, really want a huge screen for premier movies and major HD sporting events. I have been thinking about getting into FP for a while now and have heard many, many good things about the Sony HS10.

Maybe we can set something up in the next month or so....let me know if you would be willing to do that.

Thanks

Matt

If price is an issuce check out the NEC LT240K or LT260K.  They are the same thing but the LT260K has a brighter lamp (2400 lumens vs 2000 lumens)and a longer throw.  The LT240K can be found for around $2000 and the LT260K for around $2200 after a $200 rebate available on each. These are XGA computer projectors but work pretty good for home theater use.  There is no component video RCA ports but component video is supported through the two HD15 (VGA) ports. Component to HD15 cables can be found for about $17 so the inconvenience is minimal.  I have the LT260K and I keep it in economy mode which reduces the lamp brightness to 1900 lumens in exchange for increaing the lamp life 50%. At 1900 lumens its still bright enough to watch TV durring the day without pulling the shades or at night with a table lamp on.   These projectors support keystone correction so you can correct an off center placement of the projector.  The picture is also very sharp.  I have my projected on a 6'x8' screen and you have to get up pretty close to the screen to be able to see the pixels.
