Anybody watching the game....some pretty bad artifacting on motion and some pixelation at times.  Otherwise it's great to see a game in this format.
Now let's see the Badger's and the Pack in High Def.

Man... both horizontal pans and zooms are pretty icky looking. Fortunately football doesn't have many of either.

Plus their signal is pretty weak today, can't lock on the 35' antenna and it's unlocking on the 50' antenna with the preamp on it.   They really need to boost the power.

The artifacting looked bad even on my smaller 38 inch. I tried Madison tv50 and the artifacting was marginally better but they run only one other channel down the pipe instead of 46's two. It's like the sports telecasting ain't ready for prime time. Reminds me of when Microsoft first put out windows. Crashed frequently but they still acted as though its perfect.

I'm no engineer, but take 41 and 63 out of the pipe and I betcha it looks like HDNet... There's a Colorado State game on HDNet tonight... it will be interetsting to compare.

I guess that would depend on the data rate that CBS delivers via Satellite to 58.  But yes you are definitely right that if 58 were to devote all 6megs to 1-1 and shut down 2 and 3, you would probably loose the artifacting and the receiver may react with a higher signal level.

Yes, picture sucks in heavy action.

So, Tom, I'll bring the shrimp....

I really only see the artifacting when the camera is on the field. Other than that, it's looking pretty damn good. I wish I WISH we would see NFL action in HD...this is like a tease. I have a house full of guys who are in utter amazement that football can look this good... in HD! I wonder how good it could look if CBS was devoting the entire bandwidth to this game. I wonder if Jim would be willing to try it on another game just to see how much of a difference there would be. I bet there are more people watching the HD football than 41 or TELE.
Come on Jim...wanna give it a try?

Matt

I am REALLY dissapointed.  I have been waiting all week for the US OPEN and the game.  I can't even get a signal.  I getting several Chicago stations and even Faux 6 but no CBS.

Don't feel so bad I had to turn it off, it just wouldn't lock up after half time and I'm in Cedarburg with an amplified antenna on a 50 foot tower.  Come on Jim Hall, let's get a little more power, raise it from 10k ERP to 40 is only 6dB but would make a world of difference and I know the equipment costs money but it's not gonna be a big drag running 3K output to the line...not like running a 100K amp.

(PS T.S. did you get my e-mail?)

Hi,

I'm in Hartland and I couldn't get CBS at all in my usual direction of about 90 degrees. I turned my attic antenna to roughly 170 degrees and I got a solid picture for both the football game and the US Open women's finals. Only a few glitches per hour. I have no idea why this worked.

Even with the artifacts and occasional pixelation I'll take it any day over normal broadcasts. Football is fantastic in this format!

Not sure about that one Tom... I had to watch Saturday's Badger game on SD 1-3 because our 41 did not come in at all. Had to do the same thing when the new Archbishop stuff was on 41. And Bewitched is crystal clear

Pat

Couldn't get a lockable signal at all, either for Miami/Florida or the Badgers.  Formerly, I could do so easily.  I didn't try re-aiming the outdoor antenna -- but surely they haven't moved the transmitter.  (10 and 4 were coming in just fine, at their usual signal strength.)

I had my son-in-law over for the games -- we lost another convert.  The comments were like -- boy you sure do have a lot of trouble with HDTV.  Do you have to pay for this?  Have you ever had any satisfactory results?

If friends, neighbors, and relatives keep seeing this crap, they'll NEVER buy HDTV.

I feel your pain Pat. Normally I have to run my indoor antenna outside to get any signal at all on 6 and a signal that doesn't glitch every couple or minutes on 58. Otherwise I have people over and I get the same comments. I won't point any fingers and this is just a general statement, but it really seems like the local stations aren't doing a whole lot to attract new customers. If I had a knowledgeable salesmen tell me that to get HD right now I needed a TV, a box, and a rooftop antenna, I would probably say forget it and just take the TV. Waht am I talking about?? That IS what I did. I didn't buy my box until 6 months after I got my set.

I certainly love what some of the local stations are doing to provide us HD owners with good material. I just hope they understand that while we love the stuff and are fairly tolerant, the people we are trying to bring into the fold are not as impressed. A weak signal and/or pixilated picture do not impress potential buyers.
