DVI HD Connection

What is the advantage of connecting your HDTV to the HD receiver via a DVI cable?  My Toshiba has a DVI input, so I'm interested in knowing.  I believe I saw somewhere that this type of connection can carry both analog and high definition programming.  I was told that at some point in time, the DVI connection would be prevalent in the marketplace.

Any thoughts people have on this type of connection would be greatly appreciated.
