Game Clock for Superbowl cut-off?

I had a few friends over last night for the Superbowl.  It looked great.  One problem I had was that the game clock in the upper corners of the screen was partially cut-off.  I could only see just the bottom of the numbers.  Does this mean my overscan is out?  Did anyone else have this problem?

Greg, sent you a private email direct with a screen shot..but you can answer here in a public forum.  I didn't want to post the screen shot here yet.  But I will as Todd and I figure out what shots we are going to use.

Thanks for the screen shot.  I was watching in 16:9.  And yes, most of the ads were 4:3 letterboxed with most of the movies 16:9.  I noticed on other forums, some others had the same problem i did while it looks like others didn't.

Sounds strange.

I've got one in SD of

SAP brought to you by Denny's if that would help. :D Aren't they at the forefront of technology.

The overscan on my TV cut off half the clock. They'll proably lower it in the future due to most TV's having significant overscan by default.

I just posted a photo of how the picture should look if your overscan isn't screwed up.  This is exactly how it looked on my RCA and also on my HiDTV Pro.

(I fixed the site...didn't have open permissions...you can try it now gang).

This is a great picture taking advantage of 16:9, notice the cornerbacks, safeties...everyone is in the picture.....try to get 22 men and some zebras into a 4:3 without wasting have of the available field.

See now, I had the same situation during viewing of the Superbowl! The gameclock was half cutoff at the top of the screen on my Hitachi RPTV !
And the blonde cheerleader didn't look NEARLY as wonderful
( perhaps because the wives were there watching the game, too)! Can the overscan bbe corrected using the Avia calibration disc?

Matt Heebner

Avia has some very technical grids and patterns for adjusting just about everything ......but only for 480p. I am not sure about other TV's, but on my Mits...you have to adjust for every input (480i/p, 1080i). You will be able to adjust on the DVD (480i/p) inputs, but it gets tricky for adjusting on the 1080i input without a HD signal generator.

is it possible to adjust for the overscan.  I had the same thing on my Mits.

When I looked at you're screen shots, it seemed like that is a huge amount of the picture to be missing.

Could it have anything to do with the conversion from 720 to 1080, as the Mits's don't do 720?

Gregg Lengling

Yes it is possible.  I had a member e-mail me the other day that after seeing my screen shots he decided to do something about it and worked on the geometry of his set via the service menus.

HOWEVER:  This is not for the faint-hearted, as has been posted in previous messages.  You want to make note of all the beginning settings in case you really screw it up so you have a start point to go back to.

OTHERWISE:  Hire someone to come out and do the alignment, there are some persons that travel the US doing just this that are certified and now I understand that Flanners has some certified techs.

I AM NOT RECOMMENDING ANYONE TO ALIGN THEIR SETS OR AM I RECOMMENDING ANY PARTICULAR SERVICE TECH......TAKE THIS ALL  WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.

(However I will say after hearing of the problems with overscan (actually it is called over-display) and red push on the MITS sets and some others...I'm glad I bought the RCA).

I think it was the 720P conversion.   Watching the playoffs on CBS I noticed no overscan problems.   The picture on CBS was far better than ABC's Superbowl.    Other people with Toshibas also noticed the cutoff.    The question is what tuner are you using.  I think the problem is in the Samsung receivers converting from a 720P to 1080i.   Based on the number of people complaining about the clock cutoff only for this game it is NOT a problem with the TV setups.

Gregg Lengling

Just to tell you what tuners I use...I actually use 2...my normal viewing is via the internal DTC100 in my RCA RPTV.  The screen shots I posted were via my HiDTV Pro card in my computer. Both report identical pictures, I can switch from OTA on the RCA to the Component input fed from my HiDTV Pro card with a flip of the switch and the pictures are identical in appearance and geometry.

The game on CBS did not have the problem.

Tom Sielicki

Well, anybody can set their height and width to zero overscan and not have the problem.   Thats not the proper setup.  You should have 5% overscan.
