Now big deal, really, just a place to contain all the discussion regarding the Superbowl, much like the AFC playoff thread.

Thought you all would be interested in this.

Last week I heard an ad for Flanner's calling this year's Super Bowl the first one broadcast in HiDef. American's Journal/Sentinel ad today says the same thing.

For the sake of clarification, while this will be the first time it will be broadcast in HDTV in MILWAUKEE, it will be the third time the Super Bowl has been in HD. 2 years ago it was on CBS in 1080i  and three years ago it as on ABC in 720p.

Quick question:  If the Superbowl is broadcast in 720p (or any other program for that matter), and my TV only accepts 1080i, what do I do?  I have a Mitsu WT-42311 (no internal HD tuner) and will be getting TW Digital this week.  Will the STB convert 720p to 1080i?

Also, is 720p ABC's preferred HD resolution?

720p is the format Disney/ABC have decided on for their HD broadcasts. There are those who say that 720p is superior to 1080i for fast-motion content like sports because of the fact that, with 720p, every line of resolution is refreshed simultaneously. Both look wonderful, though.

720p is better with fast motion because it negates the interlace artifacts that can be apparent during broadcasts with a lot of motion, particularly sports programming. Because of the amount of sports on both ABC and ESPN, Disney has decided to go with 720p.

1080i has more pixels and on normal motion pictures the interlace artifacts at that resolution are not noticeable. This resolution is much more beneficial to movies and television shows. Hence why everyone else has gone with it.

Current well known rumor indicates that Fox, another carrier of a lot of sports programming, also wishes to go to 720p, but hasn't yet done so due to pricing still being too high.

720p, 1080i, I'll take either one! Both are FAR superior to what has been for 50 years. I will say though that HDNet showed some college football, and utilizing all the available bandwidth (unlike CBS here) I did not see any kind of motion artifacting.

I would like to see the Shania Twain halftime show in 1080, however. :D

Another question: Does anyone know if any of the pre-game material will be in HD?

For the uptight-no humor-by-the-book-boring-members.....That was sarcasm.... You better make it two 40gb Hard Drives, I need to profit.

I would like to record the whole superbowl, but it will take 2 tapes. that is the only drawback to dvhs, they need to make 10hr tapes oh well.
