Flanner's ISF calibration

I have been searching the forums for information on ISF calibrations. Unfortunately ISF is too short to search on so I've done calibration. I haven't been able to find comments by anyone who has had an ISF certified calibration done and was looking for some, specifically anyone who has had Flanner's calibrate their set.

Do they do any I2C work for Mits sets?

How much does it cost? I called them and they said $275, but I read on here that that just covers one input. Is this right?

How happy were you with the result? Was it money well spent?

I have had my set for almost a year now and figure it's high time to get this thing calibrated professionally. Just looking for thoughts on it. In my searching I saw that CarigM came this way in May which sure would have been nice, but oh well. Thanks.

i spoke to the owner of a tv electronics store, and he said if it aint broke dont fix it, plus he said they dont have the right equipment in the states yet to do the proper job.i know this doesnt really help due to it being an opinion, but it seems to make sense.i personally think that the calibration is a scam unless your picture gets all messed up and needs it.

hmm.. I don't know if I agree with that assessent. I have done the basic AVIA adjustments, as well as some geometry adjustments and SVM, and there is a huge difference in picture quality. I can only imagine there are a number of things that I haven't done yet, such as defeating red push (+25% on my 55819), clamping adjustments, etc.

Not to mention testimonials of people who have had calibration done are usually through the roof. All I am looking for here is anyone who has had it done locally so I could get some ideas on who I would want to go with....

Thats true enough.  But most sets are broke.  To the eye of someone having paid X thousand dollars for the damn thing, a few more dollars is usually seen as very well spent.

Thats NOT true enough.  Maybe he meant HE doesn't have one, but colorimeters are readily available.  Also, one can improve the display immensely without screwing up the grayscale, which is what that device is for.

Thats also true enough, but the fact is most sets are all messed up and need it.

I can not speak of local calibration by Flanners but I will say this...CraigM's calibration was worth every last penny and knowing what I know now, wouldn't hesitate for a second . I am getting performance far beyond what is possible "out of the box".  I have seen the differences, and they are quite dramatic.

As for whoever said the saying about if it aint broke....this guy doesnt know what he's talking about. I have yet to read a review of any display device (other than a high end plasma) that  had correct grey-scale and color decoding. Thats right, every display out there is totally wrong in tracking grey-scale, and most are wrong with the color decoding (red-push, false color temp, etc). Only someone who has the correct tools like a colorimeter and a HD signal generator, along with some knowledge can accurately "dial" in these setting based upon the NTSC values.  And this doesn't even account for the geometry issues, convergence, and overscan.

As far as hiring Flanners for a calibration....hard to say. Here is a link to a VERY comprehensive list by Craig Miller (probably THE most knowledgeable calibrationists of Mitsubishi TV's). I would print this out, take it to Flanners, and see what they say. The most important thing is grey-scale (cause it affects every color you see) and correcting color decoding.

CraigM's List of Calibration Services

It is archived so I hope the link works.
It works...Craig's list is the second post.

I got my Mitsubishi 65908 from Flanner's.  It was a 'floor model'. It looked pretty terrific from the start. I had CraigM out to calibrate the set last summer. He was so impressed with the picture; he told me right off that he didn't think that he would be able to do much more for it. He ran thru some basic tests, fixed the red push and then set all of the settings as defaults.

After talking about how he couldn't believe how well my set was calibrated, I happened to mention that it was a floor model at a 'higher end' electronics store that offered ISF calibrations. It was just then it occurred to us that they must have tweaked the set when they put it out on the floor.

The moral of the story is that it sounds like at least one person at Flanner's is capable of doing a decent calibration.

I've heard that they do have one or two guys are Flanners that have ISF certifications-- I'm sure if you call their service department they can tell you who, and all the other details.

For additional info go here:

You can search for dealers with equipment by state.  You also can take one of their classes in the road tours they do (looked into that last year) if you've got the interest or desire.  When I inquired, there wasn't any prerequisites like working at a dealer.

I'd also say that Steve's experience was fortunate, my 55859 was new, suffers from the red push but I did back that down some through the service menus.  Although I have not seen Matt's pre/post calibrated set, I've promised myself that if CraigM ever rolls through this neck of the woods again, I'd have him spend a day here.

I just got off the phone with "Jason" at Flanner's.  According to him, he is one of 2 guys trained to do ISF calibrations.  Their price was $350 to do one input.  You can reach him at (262) 860-6222 x238
