General (Non-HDTV) Milwaukee TV / FCC OKs WITI sale
Sunday Jun 15, 2008, 10:45:20 PM
This may seem like a stupid question but would they remain a Fox affiliate or go the way of WCGV (B rated programming)?
It would really suck if Fox went bye bye.

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.  I just thought there was plenty of coverage of the AppleTV by all of the news outlets that I didn't need to add to it.
I've had my AppleTV since last June and upgraded the software in Feb and I've loved it the whole time.   As far as rentals I've rented 3 HD titles: Resident Evil: Extinction, Live Free or Die Hard and No Reservations.  I have the 3 meg tier of DSL Internet Service from AT&T and it takes about 1 1/2 hours before I can start watching an HD title. :huh?:   I'd say the picture quality is comparable to typical OTA HD broadcasts.  It may not be as good as Blu-Ray but I still think it looks damn good compared to my progressive scan DVD player.  Standard Def movies can start after about a couple minutes.  I would say it looks better than most standard def digital OTA programming I've seen.
As far as ripping movies I've ripped about 88 movies but all before the DD5.1 support.  Gotta rerip. :(   PS: Lostify is a great Mac tool for adding tags like MPAA ratings to movies among other tags that iTunes don't allow editing.  Not sure if AppleTV's parental controls can block based on those though.
As far as Hulu I think NBC will eventually come back to iTunes.  People want to be able to watch content on their terms not the network's.  iTunes is the only solution that legally comes close to giving people most of the terms they want, content when and where they want (given they have an iPod of AppleTV).
And I don't know what issue people are having with the slideshows.  If I go under Photos - Settings I can choose a playlist and it plays when I start the slideshow.  These were settings I had tweaked in the earlier release so may be that has something to do with that.
A bug I've noticed is in regards to sorting.  In iTunes there is a tag called Sort Name that the old AppleTV used to use for sorting.  Now it uses on the movie name which sucks because where it used to list the Indiana Jones Trilogy together (I set sort names to Indiana Jones 1, 2 and 3) and they are now all over the place and out of order.

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Apple TV HD Image Quality.
Tuesday Feb 19, 2008, 09:14:45 PM
It supplements my set up very well.  I don't have any subscription television services.  It provides legal access to that content that doesn't require a computer guru.  It passes my "wife test" for usability and the picture quality is very good, granted not 1080p good but it looks like HD to me (compared with OTA HD).  Heck my 3 yr old daughter can figure it out (hopefully I won't get surprise-billed for "The Aristocats").

On a side note I'd be more apt to call BluRay "HD Pro" then call compressed content "HD-Lite".

Actually I'm able to get OTA HD recorded programming on my AppleTV easily.  I use an EyeTV 250 HD OTA tuner to record shows to my MacBook Pro.  After the show is recorded the EyeTV software transcodes the file to H.264 960x540 (half width and height of 1080p and Dolby 5.1 downmixed to matrixed 2 channel) and syncs it to the AppleTV automatically.  The downside is the lack of live view buffering and that the shows usually takes a couple hours to transcode.  Also I'll admit the solution isn't "Kitchen ready", but then again neither are most cable box DVR's.  And although its not as "pure" as the original recording, its still hella better than analog devices or paying $60+ dollars a month.
There has been no confirmation that any product other than AppleTV will have HD downloads.  Therefore likely there will not be HD downloads to the Mac Mini or any other any time soon.
And since there will be HD rentals for the AppleTV available I have less of a reason to get a blu-ray player.
And yes I ditched subscription television services two years ago.

Deals and Steals / HD-A2: $99 at Walmart, 11/2/07 Only!

This minimum mark-up law needs to be addressed.  Anyone good at writing letters so we can let our district representatives know how we feel about it (assuming others are disappointed with this law)?  If someone wrote up a form letter and posted it here (or may be in the off topic forums) may be we could initiate corrective action (that's a fat may be).

Yard Sale / Voom Tuner from Goodwill, Need card!
Sunday Aug 13, 2006, 11:20:13 AM
Paid $20.  I can return it in 3 days yet so I probably will.  I haven't had much luck google'n for a replacement card and I'm sure I would have to pay a pretty penny to get an "unofficial" card.

Yard Sale / Voom Tuner from Goodwill, Need card!
Wednesday Aug 09, 2006, 09:25:31 PM
I picked up a Voom tuner (Motorola DSR-550) at Goodwill in Waukesha.  I had hopes I'd have a second HD OTA tuner.  Unfortunately its missing its card and when I bought I didn't know the OTA tuner would not work without it.  I'm hoping the person who donated it may be a member on this board and may still have and can part with the card.
I know this is a long shot but I don't want to give up to easily.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Lost Finale NOT Going to be in HD?
Wednesday May 24, 2006, 07:24:30 PM
Looks like I may be rotating my antenna to Madison.  If WISN really wants to loose viewership keep it up.  I advise others find other means to watch this show if WISN doesn't listen (ABC, iTunes, or other means - wink wink nudge nudge say no more).

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / WWRS - 5 more Christian channels
Thursday Feb 09, 2006, 03:12:08 PM
Quote from: Joseph SMust be low power or in the wrong direction with the Sinclair stations.
I had to rotate my antenna slightly more north to find a sweet spot that got me both Milwaukee and this station apparently out of Mayville.  If you're in Milw it probably won't work without more NW rotation which might affect your reception of 18,24 or 58.  Its different programming than 55 but is the same theme and seems more culturally diverse (Mayville being a cultural mecca and all).

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / WWRS - 5 more Christian channels
Wednesday Feb 08, 2006, 10:01:50 PM
I just scanned and am now getting WWRS 52 (digital 43) adding 5 more channels (though I'm not a big watcher of Christian entertainment).  Maybe this is because low-power 43 in Waukesha has shutdown.  Or did WWRS boost their signal?

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / The Super Bowl
Monday Feb 06, 2006, 09:51:05 PM
I think the pregame music and halftime show was poorly mixed with several missed audio cues.  The missed audio cues happened quite a bit during the Stevie Wonder songs.  At least the gameplay was clean.
Also WISN/ABC messed up the audio during the Hank Williams intro.  It appeared to me they temporarily switched to an anolog audio source until Al Michaels was about 30 seconds into his speal.  I almost rotated my antenna to Madison.

My commercial votes are as follows:
Best
1. Fedex Caveman
2. Ameriquest (That killed him & Turbulance)
3. Careerbuilder.com (both monkey ads)
4. MacGyver Mastercard

Worst
1. Whopperettes
2. Blockbuster
3. Aleve w/Leonard Nimoy (I am a Trekker to the bone but that was just lame)
4. Godaddy (too much hype with no delivery)
