Latest News / TWC Navigator/Box Update

My SA 8300 HDC was still rebooting at 5:15 this morning. I didn't have time to see what if anything was updated or added.

Milwaukee HDTV Recorders & Players / Record Series
Monday Mar 31, 2014, 08:58:26 AM
Unfortunately I do not believe there is a way to do that. I've tried several times to set it up changing all kinds of settings.

When I do remember to record it, the DVR erases it when a "series" episode is to record and there's no more room. 100% full is a condition that always exists.

I've resigned myself to watching Cosmos on Hulu. Commerical breaks are shorter.

Latest News / Comcast buying Time Warner Cable
Friday Feb 14, 2014, 08:33:51 AM
Quote from: PONIES;59839I couldn't give two shits about if Comcast has a better guide on their crappy boxes or not. That is wholly irrelevant. CableCARD tuners work on Comcast and on Time Warner so there is no need for a cable company provided box on either provider. A CableCARD tuner + Media Center interface blows away any cable company DVR. I see this much like the console peasants who get so excited over their new PS4s or Xbox Ones... who cares? You guys are literally debating over which pile of crap emits the least amount of odor. I've had a gaming PC for years that blows every console out of the water just like I've had a media center PC that blows away any cable company box. When such a superior option exists to you it's like fighting over table scraps when a nice juicy steak is sitting right there.

That's all well and good for you, myself and others, That doesn't address the majority of cable customers who have no clue what a "media center" or "Cable Card" is.

Just in my family alone which encompasses about two dozen people they look at me like I have three eye's when I tell them that I watch a majority of TV through my PC with HD and Surround sound. They ask me why I have a set of rabbit ears tucked behind my TV.

When we presented my parents with a new WS tv at christmas my dad asked why does it have to be that shape and why do we have to have a cable box. They complained about having to change remotes for cryin out loud.

Business models have to appeal to the masses, That's where the money is, Not the niche markets, early adopters etc.

I'm probably an exception when it comes to the "average cable customer", I'm in my mid 50's, fairly fluent in "PCease" I got into HD, surround sound in 2005, have two of the latest android phones, two tablets on so on.

WE on this board are the ones expecting software and GUI to be at least somewhat up to date. Not my parents or even my brothers who when I complain about the guide and the DVR think I 'm nuts.

Superior options don't concern the majority of subscribers, They want to turn on the TV after dinner and watch this mornings episode of Kelly and Micheal.

Latest News / TWC Navigator/Box Update
Wednesday Jan 22, 2014, 09:20:03 AM
About the only thing I can say about the update on my 8300 HDC is the return of DVR Compensation. Thank You.

Other than that, meh.

My two Samsung boxes have the new guide and I like it. Much easier to read not mention the larger listing.

However my DVR is on my main display in the loft and it would have been nice to be able to have the new HD guide there.

I remain astonished that TWC is so far behind in updating their "flagship" equipment. They are basically blackmailing me by insisting I sign up for their "whole home" system to get a "newer" DVR, larger capacity etc.  Yes I know I can add an external SATA drive but, that can be hit or miss as to whether it works correctly.

TWC has me by the proverbial short hairs. Uverse isn't available in my area, Not much of a choice there either. SAT is not an option, no LOS.

It isn't even a matter of money, I'm more than willing to pay for content which we enjoy. But when I'm using stone knives and bearskins to receive it....

It was much better when I was a homeowner. At least I had choices.

I really miss Directv.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Time Warner/TM4 carriage dispute
Wednesday Sep 11, 2013, 07:45:43 AM
What loss of football?

PQ was substantially better against what I'm usually offered.

Personally, Sunday night's between September and February are the only time I need that channel.

I keep my rabbit ears behind the TV and it works just fine. (you mileage may vary)

I am more than happy to hear this news. Being a HUGE NASCAR fan means I won't miss any of the truck series races and all of the support programming for all of the NASCAR sanctioned series.

That's just me, your mileage may vary.

Latest News / TWC Navigator/Box Update

More rhetorical than fact finding question....

Why is it when they send these "updates" out I have to pull the power and cold boot in order to view 50-60% of my channels.

"This channel Temporarily Unavailable, please try again later, Press "A" to retry".

2 Samsung boxes every time. Doesn't matter if it's HBO or History etc.

Not a life altering event just a PITA.

And don't forget game consoles. I use my XBOX to connect to Netflix, HULU, youtube etc as well as my PC network through my now ancient 7" gun RPTV.

My XBOX is hardwired to my router and all of my PC's including two desktops are wireless.  Much better connection for streaming.

My newer LCD is not internet ready but, I plug one of my external HD's into it and use the built in media player to watch HD programming/movies I've burned to it.

Tech savvy consumers are already ahead of the curve. Even those not so tech savvy are starting to discover the numerous options available.

Channel 12 blasts Time Warner Cable statements
The Business Journal by Rich Kirchen, Senior Reporter
Date: Wednesday, July 11, 2012, 2:09pm CDT

WISN-TV (Channel 12) in Milwaukee took exception to Time Warner Cable saying the station's owner threatened a "blackout" over contentious contract negotiations and said if negotiations fail to progress, WISN will no longer run on the cable system.

In a press release Wednesday, WISN-TV said its owner Hearst Television Inc.    , New York City, said the company is trying to reach a new agreement with Time Warner Cable, but negotiations have reached an impasse. Hearst has temporarily granted Time Warner an extension to continue carrying Channel 12.

"Time Warner Cable has terminated negotiations with our company, Hearst Television, for continued carriage of WISN-TV on Time Warner Cable systems," noted Jan Wade, president and general manager of WISN-TV. "Hearst has successfully concluded more than 150 carriage agreements in recent months with other cable companies with no disruption of service to subscribers."

Wade said Time Warner Cable refuses to pay the station "a reasonable fee relative to what it pays for other significantly less popular channels." Time Warner said earlier this week that Hearst was seeking a 300 percent increase in the fee the cable system pays to carry Hearst stations, including WISN.

"Time Warner's characterization of the percentage increase in carriage fees we are seeking is inaccurate," Wade said. "We have sought a reasonable increase consistent with the increased costs we have to pay for our highly valued programming and the carriage fees now paid to us by Time Warner's competitors."

Time Warner Cable is seeking a significant discount from market-based fees, Wade said.

"Contrary to Time Warner's claim, we will not be 'blacking out' our station," Wade said. "You may continue to receive our station for free, over the air, or by satellite from DirecTV or DISH, and, where available, from other cable operators."

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Cable modem TW is supplying?
Thursday Mar 22, 2012, 10:30:43 AM
They asked the same thing when I installed 2 years ago. I have outlets in every room except the WC. :(

Instead of going round and round with customer service and the tech, I said yes. Tech came and installed the modem in my living room and was gone in 1/2 hr.

I moved it to the second floor loft, installed my router, hardwired the X-box and went wireless for my desktop, lap tops and phones.

Haven't had an issue since.

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / TWC Audio Isues
Friday Sep 09, 2011, 09:29:58 AM
This thread hasn't generated much traffic but I have an update,,,

The Sony receiver just will not output dolby digital no way no how. I did a factory reset on it and still only PCM from the TWC STB.

Out with the Sony and tried an older dusty Onkyo receiver from my original HTIB that I recently found I still had.

Hooked it up fired it up and viola! DD from the STB.

In doing a bit research on the Sony, I wasn't able to pin down the actual reason, it seems a number of Sony AV receivers have this issue with no real resolution to be found. Not with just TWC STB's but also with D* and Cox STB's.

I never really liked the Sony but, this was my secondary viewing room and wanted some nice 3.0 sound.

Seeing that the Sony will only do PCM, it's going to be relegated to PC duty.

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / TWC Audio Isues

Tried all of the suggestions ... No Joy.

Everything else with a digital output works fine with the A/V receiver except the STB.

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / TWC Audio Isues
Tuesday Aug 23, 2011, 01:02:28 PM
Quote from: Jack 1000;57754What happens when you just hook up the DVR to the TV and leave the receiver out of the picture?  If that works OK, than it might be an issue with the receiver and the DVR.

If that doesn't work, check audio settings on the DVR and receiver to see if anything was accidentally changed.  TWC sometimes pushes software updates without warning, so a setting on the DVR/reviver might have been changed.

If that doesn't work, I would turn off the TV, DVR, and receiver and than unplug each one for about five minutes.  After plugging in each one, power up each one.  Wait for the box to boot up and for the time to display on the box for 30 seconds, before turning the TV back on.  Now see if that solves the problem.  I will refer this issue to my cable engineering contact if it does not and see what he says.

Jack

OK,

I have not tried the sound on the TV itself to see if that's effected.

The first thing I did was check the audio settings on the DVR. Those were unchanged.

Changing the A/V receiver to 2 channel output works fine. DD not so much.

I have not done a cold boot on the DVR or receiver yet. I'll have to try that after work tonight.

I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks Jack.
