I got a mailing about this the other day.  For TWC customers with no other streaming service, it could be an option.  For $10 a month though, the movie overlap with Netflix/Amazon doesn't make it something most people would even consider.  After a quick browse, I found *two* movies that I'd even be interested in watching that are not on either my Netflix or Amazon queues ("Pain & Gain" and "ST Into Darkness" for those dying to know ;)

I could be off base here and I'd be interested to see what sort of buzz this generates but I just don't see it being popular.  Six months of HBO would be cheaper than twelve of Epix and you'd have access to some fantastic programming that's not available anywhere else.

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Getting rid of old latex paint
Friday Nov 08, 2013, 11:34:01 AM
You can also buy a big bag of generic cat litter (the clay based kind) and use that to "dry up" the paint in the can.  Basically, it just needs to be solid before going to the landfill :|

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / DOCSIS 3 modems in MKE market
Wednesday Aug 21, 2013, 07:06:42 AM
Quote from: DJay;59640Would like to turn in my TW modem and purchase my own possibly SB6141. My question is that I have TW bundle cable tv, phone & internet! Would I need a special unit for both phone & internet like my TW unit (all in one) or would SB6141 work? Please give info on this! Thanks

The irony is that a tech would likely come to your house, install a splitter and you would keep the current box you have but it would only be handling the phone portion while the internet portion is split off to your new modem.  I've argued with TWC over the logic of this since the "rental fee" would disappear from my bill, but the device itself would remain in my home.  It makes no sense but it's the way it was explained to me...twice! :bang:

Quote from: PONIES;59465... Google Voice is free and you also have Skype.

Google Voice is basically call forwarding.  You still need a number to send the call to. I have no cell coverage in my house.

Latest News / TWC - DVR Compensation Gone

I don't think complaining will do you much good.  This is likely a result of TiVos lawsuit:

Quote from: Bebop;59121Just call TW, use the key words "cancel or downgrade", That will get you to CRS and ask for a better deal. It worked for me and got $20 off my RR extreme.

That worked for me too (though I was actually serious about canceling the TV portion).  Somehow, by upgrading my service, they were able to knock $50 off my bill.  I don't understand it but I wasn't about to complain.

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / 2 channel setup
Tuesday Mar 08, 2011, 08:52:56 AM
Quote from: Ralph Kramden;57095What do you mean by "CD transport"? Do you mean a CD player?

Yeah, sorry, that slipped out from my audiophile geekiness.  Yes, a CD player, essentially, but with a quality external DAC, not a $50 discman or something.  I used to be more into this stuff :(

Basically I was just looking for any info on what someone around may have.  I'm not set with what I'd like to do, I'm just looking for ideas/feedback.  I just want a headphone rig that I can also use with CDs and possibly expand to vinyl that will be a transcendental experience when I'm sitting there in a chair with some coffee :D

Thanks for the link.  I will check that site out tonight.

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / 2 channel setup
Sunday Mar 06, 2011, 01:22:49 PM
I'm hoping that some of the peeps here are into audio as well and could perhaps help me out with a nice 2 channel setup for headphones.  AVS is just sooo overwhelming sometimes.  Ultimately, I'd like to put together a nice little 2 channel (tube?) amp and headphone rig (think man-cave...chair, table, headphone rig, yeah :)

I'd then look for a nice CD transport and possibly add a turntable at some point.  I'd like to put this together in stages; amp would be first and used with my existing cans and probably MP3 player until I get a CD transport for the setup.

Suggestions?  Thoughts?  I've put this in Google a couple times over the years and have checked out various AVS threads but this really seems to be a niche thing these days and I just haven't gotten around to the deep digging that's really required I guess.

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Just lowered my TWC bill...
Thursday Jan 13, 2011, 01:53:29 PM
Yeah, TWC is soo screwy.  When my previous price-lock expired a couple months back, I got a notice that my bill would be going up and I'd be entered into a new price-lock contract.  With the AT&T and sat. competition lately, I expected my bill to go either go *down* or, at the very least, stay the same.  I called them to opt-out of my new price-lock.  After telling them I was shopping around for better deals, they offered me the same services at a level that was about $10 less than my previous price-lock bill.  The CSR told me that the only catch was that this wasn't a two year price lock and the current rate would only be good for *one* year (though I'm not actually entering into any contract).  WTF are they doing over there!? :bang:

I guess the bottom line should be to always just call.

Milwaukee HDTV Recorders & Players / TWC Whole House DVR
Friday Dec 03, 2010, 10:14:54 PM
There was an article in the paper this week, that I'm too lazy to look up online right now, that talked about this new service.  It was part of some $180 package that also included appointment scheduling for exact times and not three hour windows (or something like that); a sort of "premium" package for the elite subscribers who wanted to pay for better service.  It was a weird article and you should check it out.  Anyway, it talked about the whole house DVR rolling out in December though.  I'm pretty interested myself.

What model do you have Mike?  I've been looking at the Harmony One for myself.  I've seen the 510 pretty cheap in the past.  My buddy has...um....an 880 (?) that used to be da bomb before the One came out.  Whatever model it is, I was looking at that one for myself over a year ago.  I almost bought a 510 for my parents for Christmas but something about some reviews made me change my mind.

I already use TeamViewer for remote desktop support occasionally so I was liking the fact that I can program via computer (back in the day, I used to have one of those "learning" remotes that copied the IR code basically).

My only concern is really getting them too much of a remote.  They either watch cable or watch a movie via DVD/BR.  They're used to using the "Guide" and the "List" (DVR), etc buttons on the TWC Synergy remotes too so I don't want to confuse them too badly with an overly complicated device. :huh?:

I'm thinking that I need to buy my parents a universal remote and I'm seeking some recommendations.  Basically, I keep having to reprogram things due to accidental button presses and things getting all out of whack.  My parents are in Racine so they're not that far away but still.  Sometimes I'm able to help them over the phone (like a few days ago), other times I'm not so lucky and they get very frustrated.

Basically, I'm looking for a simple to use remote that could control their TWC DVR box, a Sony TV and BDP, and a Yammy AVR.  I'm thinking that if I can just get the real remotes out of their hands, I can cut down on the accidental button presses (the other day my father seemed to have some accidentally switched input sources so that cable audio is present only when the AVR is set to DVD instead of DTV, even though I had a "memory guard" setting enabled to attempt to prevent this sort of accident).  While I don't mind helping, they end up getting even more frustrated that I do.

I've looked at various Harmonies throughout the past few years for myself but I've never broken down and gotten one.

Thoughts?  Suggestions?
