Milwaukee HDTV Programming / WISN calls this "HD"
Tuesday Jan 17, 2012, 03:46:40 PM

I call it "widescreen SD". Seriously?  The bug is the only thing that appears to be in actual HD.

It's kind of sad that WDJT's HD quality is better...

Not even in HD yet and the automation just totally melted down (That or the production staff has totally given up). Skipped through about five packages, odd graphics popped up, the open rolled randomly, and Stephanie Brown was caught on air saying "I totally don't know what's going on.... check your screen"

OOPS.

Edit: Everything is so obviously still in SD, which is concerning. all three of the other stations had sharper pictures or sharp graphics prior to going HD...

Quote from: trev57;58092Somebody help me out. I'm not that informed on the inner workings of news stations, but assuming they have the HD switcher, HD cameras, HD graphics, etc., what's next? What's holding them back from going HD?

It could literally be any number of things, depending on how much Management cares about the transition. They could be waiting for a HD clipstore (I don't think WTMJ has even updated theirs yet, which is why opens look fuzzy, since they're in 16:9SD), HD microwave equipment, upgrades to the editing system and playback servers...

Basically, they have the choice of pulling a WTMJ and going HD with just the bare minimum, or pulling a WITI and going HD with everything in HD. Since it's WDJT, I'm going to guess they'll be somewhere in the middle.

Quote from: trev57;58090It looks like it could be happening soon. There was a new HD bug and sports ticker being used tonight.

I recently found out that they have the HD switcher. Whether it's installed or not is anyone's guess. It wasn't on November 30th, when the start of their 5PM show was plagued with a black flash every few seconds.

Keep in mind that WISN was using a HD ticker system for almost 6 months before they finally went full HD. ;)

Also, they should really change that template. It looks exactly like WISN's old sports stuff. I'm pretty sure they're being generated from the same type of system, too, which just means both stations were being lazy.

I'm almost certain these are being generated in master control.

Quote from: PONIES;57931Not in a positive way.

More like "Oh great there's that ****** station with the crappy bitrate's annoying jingle again."

That jingle serves as a reminder for me to never watch their news.

It's no Hello Milwaukee or 4 New York. Those also both look like someone sat down and planned out the promo instead of just tossing together a bunch of footage from [insert local festival here] and slapping music on top.

Quote from: trev57;57887And they are pretty much all useless.

On the plus side, there was a promo for CBS 58 news done in HD. It's on its way.

They've been doing promos in HD ever since the master control upgrade a few years back...

Depending on the programming, it might not be available in HD in syndication. Sometimes the distributors do that for some reason. :huh?:

Quote from: mrschimpf;57836Pray that WTMJ doesn't pull a WLS and throws their signal on in 720p. It's seriously not needed.

I am told that they will not.

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Uverse and Self Install
Sunday Aug 28, 2011, 03:59:15 AM
Yikes.

We're mostly looking at it for internet. We currently have AT&T DSL and have frequent line problems, and I figure there's less chance of line trouble between here and the Uverse node down the block than there is between here and the CO that's halfway across town. We currently have 3Mbps down (and because of poor line conditions usually get like 1.7-2.4) right now and all indications point to not being able to go higher due to the poor quality signal we receive.

And before someone asks, people in this neighborhood with TWC internet say they have frequent problems with it.

I wish this market would just get FiOS service. :(

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Uverse and Self Install

Does anyone know if Uverse offers self install in this market, and what the kit contains?

Quote from: trev57;57732But at the same time, they told me there were no plans to launch HD newscasts anytime in the near future, and that's happening in about a month or so.

I heard some stuff about that recently.

All I can say is, don't hold your breath. :D

I doubt this would replace WBME's primary channel, but wouldn't be shocked if it did, knowing Weigel :bang:

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / CBS58 going HD
Sunday Jul 24, 2011, 03:18:26 PM
One of their reporters (Tiffany Tarpley) posted a few behind the scenes pictures...

Here's one of the new cameras on somewhat-robotic pedestal. Guess they couldn't resist the urge to buy robotics and kick some staff to the curb...

Here you can see their control room still has the ancient GVG-200 in use.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / WISN News Audio / What's Wrong?
Sunday Jul 24, 2011, 03:03:18 PM
I've noticed it's really bad when they're using the mic for whoever's doing the weather, regardless of where they're at on the set.

I tend to watch TV on my PC with headphones so it is extremely noticeable and extremely irritating.
