Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / TWC Audio Isues
Monday Aug 22, 2011, 08:55:20 AM
I've had an issue crop up and need some help.

I moved my 8300 HDC DVR to a different room.

I hooked it up and fired up my A/V receiver and the DD audio is breaking up.

The original STB in this location was hooked directly to the receiver via coaxial audio and HDMI to the TV with no problems.

This was a straight swap. No changes in settings on the receivers or STB's.

In it's previous location, the DVR was hooked up to an A/V receiver via coaxial and Component video with no issues.

I tried an optical connection no change. Removed the HDMI connection and went with component. No change.

I tried running the audio through the TV from the STB and then to the receiver. Same problem.

In order to verify any issues with the receiver, I get clear DD audio on the receiver from the TV OTA and DVD player.

Only issue is the DVR.

The receiver having the issue is an older Sony STR-DE597 and it was fine until the swap.

Suggestions?

I'm really getting tired of seeing this message lately. (See Attached)

Changing the channel up or down and then back works, but according to TWC there's nothing wrong. The "A" button does nothing.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / My Time Warner Review
Friday Oct 08, 2010, 09:59:53 AM
It's been a month since I moved. I was a D* sub for 13 years with no complaints.

New place has no LOS. I already knew that and confirmed by a mover's connection tech visit. I'm stuck with TWC. No FIOS or Uverse available in the area (yet)  to even try.

My Review? it stinks.

Reading the TWC problem comments all over this forum did not bode well.

So far here's what I've noticed...

Pixelation everywhere, PLEASE WAIT..., stuttering, drop outs, freezes, motion artifacts, Clunky guide, duplicates of duplicates in the guide, (making a favorites list is a 2 hr ordeal)

My display is calibrated and I touched it up after the move. The overall PQ appears to be soft. It may be me, but it still looks soft.

I have one 8300HDC DVR and one standard box (not sure of the model #). Hardware is OK, I don't have any real complaints about the hardware itself other than the dinky internal hard drive. I will be addressing that with an external in the future.

Do I get the programming I was looking for? Yes. Is it the quality I was used to with D*? No.

I understand that I'm now sharing the feed with thousands of other subs instead of getting my signal straight from the source but geez, Can't I watch at last one program without having some kind of anomaly?

Thanks for reading my rant (review) As I said I'm stuck now and have to learn to deal with it.

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / Kicking and Screaming to TWC
Monday Jun 07, 2010, 04:46:34 PM
Fortunately or unfortunately within the next several months my living arrangements will be changing.

I am a long time D* customer and will be forced to change to TWC. New digs face NE, no chance of a roof mount (common area) and definitely no chance for a southern view.  and no chance to change to a unit with a southern view, Balcony mounts are OK just won't work out for me. (not sure it would work anyway, heavily wooded area) I'm familiar with OTARD and will be renting not owning.

FIOS and U-verse are not available in that area.

Having not had TWC since 1996, I'm more than a little out of the loop with their gear and packages.

I currently subscribe to the Total Choice + package, with an HR22 DVR

Several Questions:

Does TWC have a comparable package?

What's the latest greatest DVR TWC offers and is it any good?

I hear all this talk about Navigator, what's the scoop? Good, Bad?

I checked a thread from about 6 months ago where Jack went into some details about STB's & packages. Just wondering if there's anything new(er)

Any other info you guy's can provide would be very helpful.

Sorry for the long winded post, I just never thought I'd ever go back to TWC for anything but RR.

Thanks

Milwaukee HDTV Events / DCI Big Loud and Live 6
Tuesday Jul 21, 2009, 02:03:15 PM
Just thought I post this event being shown in the Milwaukee area on August 6th at 5:30 pm. It's advertised as being in HD and 5.1 surround.

http://www.ncm.com/Fathom/ConcertsAndMusic/DCI2009_Live.aspx

Mark Strube, can you shed any light on the technical side of this?

I've already got my tickets at the Majestic for this one.

It's also being shown at the North Shore, South Shore, Renaissance and the Marcus Fox Valley sites.

Latest News / Channels 58 & 41 to Keep Analog signals
Friday Jun 05, 2009, 04:27:51 PM
So much for 58 digital on D*.

Milwaukee's CBS affiliate and one of its sister stations will continue broadcasting in analog after the June 12 nationwide switch to digital television.
Chicago-based Weigel Broadcasting announced Friday the programming of CBS affiliate WDJT-TV (Channel 58) will air in analog on Channel 63. WMLW (Channel 41) will remain available to over the air on analog TV sets.

The CBS affiliate will be available on digital channel 58.1. WMLW's programming will be available in a digital format on digital channel 58.2.

Weigel executives said maintaining analog broadcasts of the stations will provide a "lifeline" to viewers who haven't prepared for the digital transition. After the transition, viewers will receive digital TV signals only via a digital converter box or subscriptions to cable or satellite television services.

"Unfortunately, not all homes in our viewing area are prepared, in full or in part, for the digital transition," said Jim Hall, general manager of Weigel's Milwaukee stations. "Those homes still need to be able to receive vital -news information."

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Multipath, Multipath
Thursday Mar 19, 2009, 12:31:20 PM
Here's the situation:

I'm reconfiguring our conference room A/V. Projector, Audio, and TV.

I'm good on the projector, A/V-PC integration.

My problem is the TV reception.

Our office is approximately 1/2 mile S-SW of the Lincoln park towers for 12-58.
and about 2 miles west of the Blue hole and the rest.

Building is 2 stories typical steel and concrete construction, steel deck and low slope roof.

The conference room is in the middle of the building. (of course)

Experiments have been conducted with an old D* DBS/digital OTA tuner and rabbit ears.

Reception is spotty as anticipated.

My questions:

Given our proximity to all of the towers would a small rooftop antenna without a rotor improve the situation? (no rotor simplifies the situation in multi user environment)(KISS)

Would I need the rotor?

Or just better rabbit ears?

Penetrating the roof, routing conduit through it and flashing in that and the tripod mount is NOT an issue.

I lived in Riverwest for about 18 years and am familiar with the reception issues being that close to the towers. 10 years later however, with the digital signals I don't know if the issue changes all that much.

Back then I put a small OTA antenna with an adjustable attenuator on the roof and it helped but was not the cure all.

Thanks!

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / CBS Responds (sort of)
Tuesday Jan 20, 2009, 04:54:40 PM
A very disgruntled co-worker with D* is fed up with CBS-58. He sent an e-mail off to the station and this is the response:

Subject: RE: HDTV on 58

We broadcast an analog and digital signal over the air and have contracts with the cable companies for the redistribution of both of those signals.

The satellite companies have entered into contracts with us for our analog signal only.  They do not have agreements in place with us that would allow them to carry our digital signal.

However, as our analog signal will be dropped next month and we will only be broadcasting digitally, a resolution of some sort should be forthcoming.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Market Wide DTV Trasition Test
Thursday Sep 04, 2008, 08:05:15 AM
I received this E-mail last night regarding the DTV transition in Feb of 09.

PRESS RELEASE
DATE:  September 3, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARKET-WIDE BROADCAST TEST

FOR DIGITAL TELEVISION TRANSITION

SCHEDULED FOR September 15, 2008 during 5 p.m. Programming

MILWAUKEE, WI.  (September 3, 2008) – [twelve] [(12)] local stations will unite to conduct
the first innovative DTV transition test designed to prepare viewers for the end of analog
television on February 17, 2009.

During 5 p.m. programming on September 15, 2008 the local television stations listed
will each be making special efforts to inform viewers of the DTV transition and help
viewers determine if they are ready for the changes that are coming in February 2009.

During their 5 p.m. newscast, WDJT-TV, Channel 58 (Weigel Broadcast Group); WISN-TV,
Channel 12 (Hearst-Argyle Television); WITI-TV Channel 6 (Local TV LLC), and WTMJ-TV,
Channel 4 (Journal Broadcast Group) will alert viewers and explain how the test will work.
At approximately 5:10 p.m., each of these stations will simulate the termination of analog
broadcasting by removing the video signal that feeds the analog transmitter for 60 seconds
causing the screen to show simulated static with special instructions the viewer will need to
know in order to receive a digital television broadcast signal in the future.  For those viewers
already viewing digital television broadcast signals, they will receive a graphic on their
television screen informing them that they are DTV ready.

Also during 5 p.m. programming, WBME-TV, Channel 49 (Weigel Broadcast Group);
WCGV-TV, Channel 24 and WVTV-TV, Channel 18 (Sinclair Broadcast Group); WMVS-TV,
Channel 10 and WMVT-TV, Channel 36 (Milwaukee Area District School Board); WPXE-TV,
Channel 55 (ION Media Networks); WVCY-TV, Channel 30 (VCY America);  WWRS-TV,
and Channel 52 (Trinity Broadcasting Network) will provide on-screen education on the DTV
transition.

Finally, each station listed above will direct viewers with questions to call a  DTV Answers
Hotline at a number to be announced during the 5 p.m. programming that evening.  This
special DTV Answers Hotline will be staffed from 5 to 8 p.m. on September 15 to aid
Southeastern Wisconsin viewers with questions about the test and about the DTV Transition.

The test is an unprecedented cooperative effort between Milwaukee Television Stations,
Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications, DirecTV, Dish Network, and AT&T.  The
DTV Answers Hotline is being sponsored by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA).

As February 17, 2009 draws closer, area television stations plan to participate in additional
market-wide tests.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / 36-1 Reception Issue
Tuesday Sep 25, 2007, 08:11:52 AM
I'm on the South side of Milw. I have rooftop antenna, with 100% signal strength on 36-1.

While watching the channel I have two issues.

1. Signal drops out completely intermittently, (searching for OTA signal) for about a second then comes back.

and/or

2. Pixelation, audio drop out. again intermittently.

This occurs about every 2-3 minutes.

Same symptoms occur on the following:

My H20-100 into my Mits 48413.
My H20-600 into a Samsung SP-R4232.
On the Sammy SP-R4232 built in OTA Tuner.

OTA Antenna has home runs to each tuner from a splitter.  I have tried running the antenna to the tuners directly, no splitter. Same issue.

All antenna connections are good, from the roof down. I check them twice a year.

I thought it may be a D* STB tuner issue until the same issue showed up on the Sammy built in tuner.

I have no issues on any other OTA channel.

Any Ideas?

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Video Bars on Plasma
Thursday Jan 05, 2006, 06:41:01 PM
I have my Samsung SP-R4232 in the rec room.

It is showing video bars ONLY on the Directivo input.

I have the STB hooked up using S-video. (best connection on this STB)

I noticed the bars immediately.

I installed a new 4X8 multiswitch last weekend replacing the rats nest of connections that previously existed.

During that installation I forgot to hook up the ground blocks.  The bars were almost completely gone but not quite.  Hooked up the ground and they're back.

The 4 other STB's including the H-10 are completely clear of bars.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe the coax from the multiswitch to the STB may be inferior or damaged.

I'm using existing coax of unknown age that is run through the drywalled ceiling to the STB location.

OTA, DVD inputs are crystal clear.

Bad Coax, Bad Ground,

Thanks

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Replacement Speakers
Monday Mar 21, 2005, 12:57:57 PM
I'm looking at possibly replacing the drivers in my current mains.

These are old Atlantis 10 3 way speakers. 10" woofers, 5" mid and 3.5" tweeters.

The drivers are showing their age (20+) dust cover is mssing from one of the woofers, Paper cones are drying out. etc.

Is there a local source for quality drivers?  I realize the internet is rich in choices.  But I would like to avoid the hassle of returns if I don't "like" them.

Re-coning and re-edging is a possiblity, but I think with newer drivers, especially the mids and tweeters I would be able to better appreciate the audio quality of DVD's and CD's.

Considering the top end of audio when I bought these speakers was vinyl and tape.

The reason I'm "thinking",  of upgrading the drivers is that the cabinets are great.

Or should I just breakdown and buy new?

I have a new Entertainment Center I've built and would like to show it off.

It just doesn't seem to fit anywhere.

Whata'ya think guy's?

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / PQ of Packer game

I'm not sure what's happened but, the quality of the broadcast this weekend seems to have improved.

Everything seemed to be much clearer, sharper, greener with no glitches.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / HD vs SD Graphics
Wednesday Sep 22, 2004, 04:39:10 PM
In the Kudo's to Fox 6 thread a discussion started about  a member not seeing the graphics package during the Packer game.

Along those lines.... Just the opposite.

Maybe it's just me but, I'm really irritated that the graphics on the HD  broadcasts are positioned for a standard 4:3 broadcast.

It's not just Fox, MNF is the same.

Why?

Is it because,

(A) they do not have the facilities to generate a separate package for each broadcast format?

(B) "most people won't care"?

(C) Give us some time, we're working on it.

Just Curious

I may have missed this (or not)

I'm curious if Fox is going to broadcast tonights game in HD.

(thinking out loud) it may be a good opportunity to work out the bugs so to speak.

If this info's been reported earlier, my apologies!

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Nascar

It really shouldn't be this difficult to find somewhere on the web a network schedule for HD broadcasts for the remainder of the NASCAR Nextel Cup season on NBC and TNT.

Can anyone point me to a site with the info?

Thanx

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / A conundrum
Tuesday Jun 08, 2004, 10:25:19 PM
Here it is.

The wallet in my signature is full.

I'm finally ready to add the last piece of gear to the collection... The big screen TV

Now the point,  Instaed of asking the usual question of what to get, I'm looking for a different direction.

What not to get. ??

I've settled into looking at.. RPTV's, 46-55", HDTV Ready, No need for built in tuner.  DTV subscriber. Budget $2,000 which includes the DTV tuner.

When you surf for opinions/reviews on manufacturers and models you get either glowing reports or it's trash.  You get the same thing from most of the big box sales associates.

Although I am planning on stopping at Flanners on Sat to check out the tent and the RPTV's.

I've begun schleping (sic)  around looking at sets.

I like what I see from the Toshiba cinema series, I'm waiting for the new 51" model to hit the stores.  Decent overall aesthetic appearance.  Pretty good picture (after dowsing the torches)

Given my budget, is there another line of gear I should consider?

Why? Other than Toshiba is &*(%^  and Brand X is better because that's what I have.

I'm usually alot more gung ho when it comes to purchases. But, and it's a big but.

I really don't want the better saying one night "you paid how much? and this looks better than our old TV?"
