Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Does WTMJ Bug their HD?
Thursday Jan 11, 2007, 11:37:15 AM
I've never seen a local one on WTMJ -- only the national peacock (and thankfully it's small at that).

Quote from: Gregg Lengling;36509The transmitter is already co-located at the Main channel 6 tower and has been for well over 1 year.

Gregg,

Thanks again.  Perhaps I should aim my antenna there!  I was getting my (apparently bad) info from antennaweb.org -- they still show 6-1 at a different tower than 6 analog.  See attached picture from the site.

Line A is 6-1, and line D is 6 (among others).  Right now I'm aimed right at line A.  Looks like I'll be up in the attic tonight!

Thanks for the info -- that is exactly what I was looking for.  (Where did you find it?)

I have one more question:  Will the transmitter for 6-1 move to the current 6 analog tower location at any point in the future?

I still get dropouts on 6-1, and if they move their transmitter, I will be a happy camper!

I read that many of the channels currently assigned for HD OTA may be changing once analog goes away in 2009.  I'm trying to find out if any locals might be assigned to VHF -- will I need more than my UHF antenna (CM4221)?  It picks up channel 8 (10-1) just fine, but won't do lower VHF channels well at all.

I've done a search to find out which channels the locals will be using with not much success.  Does anyone know what the permanent channel locations will be for OTA local stations after 2009?  Has it even been determined yet?

Thanks,
Will

For those interested:  CompUSA now has the Seagate eSATA 300GB Hard Drive for 149.99 -- good through Tuesday Nov 21 only.  It's 199.99 - 50 MIR.

You can probably put a bare SATA drive in an eSATA enclosure and save some $$$.

See this Seagate 300GB SATA at Fry's (currently $90).  And this eSATA box ($60).

It might be worth a shot, considering you would save about $140.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Can you suggest an antenna?
Thursday Nov 02, 2006, 02:34:14 PM
It depends on what you have room for antenna-wise.  I tried that Radio Shack antenna, but had the same problem -- you have to aim it for a specific channel.  If you can do an attic, or better yet, a roof install, you should have no trouble at all getting consistent signals.

For a tight install location (small attic, or even a closet), you might try a Channel Master 4221A from Marmax, which is right near you on 68th and Rawson.  It only costs $22-something, and is small-ish at 20"x36".  It works great for me in my attic.

Note that this antenna is UHF-only, so in theory might have difficulty in picking up channel 10's digital feed on channel 8.  In practice, I get 98% signal strength on 10's digital stations.

For an outside install, the 4228 is basically two of the 4221A.  If you have the space, that might be the way to go.  See http://www.channelmaster.com/Pages/TVS/UHFAnts.htm

Good luck,
Will

I'm finally getting around to updating this in case people are interested.

I bought a Channel Master 4221A from Marmax, and put it in the attic.  After a small adjustment (aiming it right at the 6-1 tower), I'm now able to pull everything in.  6-1 still is only 78 - 83% signal strength, but it is enough to get the channel, so I am happy!

Thanks again for the help.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / CBS 58-1 no guide data

Also, there is no Closed Captioning on the DTV feed, but there is on the SD feed.

Thanks.

I have the same TV.  I get all channels except 6.1 with 95-98% signal strength.  After the channel scan, the TV will not continue to attempt a signal lock unless the TV knows the channel is there (at least in my experience).

Try tuning all stations directly at their real channel locations.  See http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx and enter your address to get channel frequency assignments.  Only pay attention to the digital stations.

For whatever reason, the TV tunes them as 34.3, 33.3, etc.  You may get an intermittent signal when tuning this way; the channel may go in and out on 33.3 vs. getting nothing at all on 6.1, e.g.  You can then see the real signal strength number, and if it fluctuates.  (Go to menu, applications, diagnostics to view.)

Try moving the antenna while watching the signal strength number.  From Gregg's post, I might try rotating your antenna so that it points at the towers, even if there are obstacles.

BTW, how do you like the TV?  And where did you get it?  They stopped selling them a while back i thought.

Good luck,
Will

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Packers WILL be in HD...

Quote:
The Packers will be high-def
Although the original plan was for Sunday's Packers-Saints game not to be broadcast in high-definition on Fox, Channel 6 says the plans have changed and the noon game will air in high-def.

Thanks both of you for the suggestions!

Does anyone know if the antenna will work essentially sideways?  Like this:

[----------------------]
[----------------------]
[----------------------]
[----------------------]
[----------------------]

vs the normal way, like this:

[---------]
[---------]
[---------]
[---------]
[---------]
[---------]
[---------]
[---------]

Thanks,

Hi,

I am in Tosa, around 66th and North Ave, and am having trouble receiving WITI-HD, channel 6-1 (really channel 33).  I have an RCA antenna like this one in the attic of my two storey house.  It's a UHF / VHF mast antenna from Menards, and I receive all other digital channels perfectly.

According to my Sony TV with built in ATSC tuner, I get signal strength on all stations except WITI at 95-98%.  Even 30-1 comes in at 98.  WITI signal strength ranges from 41% to sometimes as high as 78%, but it cycles between those numbers rapidly, and drops out frequently (when I'm able to get it at all).  The only way I got my TV to even recognize it as a channel was to tune 33-3 directly; it wouldn't recognize it as 6-1.

I have tried repositioning the antenna in the attic, but have not been able to get WITI at all.  Yesterday I bought an amplified UHF-only small antenna from Radio Shack (this one), and was able to get WITI at about 83% with it just sitting in the living room.  It wouldn't get 18-1 and 24-1 though.  It's going back.

I'm thinking of getting a channel master 4221A (here)to see if that will work.  I'd get the 4228, but I have space limitations in the attic, as it's only 35" floor to peak.

Questions:

1.  Might this antenna solve my problem?  (I know there's no sure answer here.)

2.  Will this antenna work positioned sideways, with the 20" dimension placed horizontally?

3.  Anyone know of a local place that sells these?

4.  Any other antenna suggestions, ideas, gotchas?

Thanks!
Will

QuoteThose little white dots you see on WTMJ-DT network shows are an entirely different problem.

Can you explain this to me?  Is this also a WTMJ-DT-only issue?  If so, are they aware of it / working on it / do they care?  Or is it just my TV?

Thanks!  (and sorry about the thread-jacking)

I have noticed this on 4-1 OTA also.  I have a Sony kd34xbr960 (widescreen tube with ATSC tuner) and 4-1 pixellates often.  It looks like white dots in the darker areas of the screen.

Antenna strength shows 98%, and I have no problems like this on any other digital OTA stations.  I can't compare 4-1 OTA picture to cable -- I don't have cable or dish; only OTA.

Hope this helps.
