Well its about time. The only question now is how much content will actually be in HD.

This may be a silly question, but that means that OTA 41-1 will be upgraded too?  I assume TWC would need to get the signal OTA and re-transmit it.  I sure hope they don't try to cram another HD signal on 58's already too-compressed stream.

This sucks... I was hoping for more national HD additions.

What does WMLW air besides a bunch of syndicated/old content?

Hopefully Directv picks this up.  The Brewer games on SD are just absolutely brutal.  I got a better picture from my radio.

Pretty sure they would pick up sports and other live shows in HD.  It could be why they are doing this, because of the low PQ of Brewers games.  I suspect that a lot of their syndicated content is not in HD.

This planned upgrade goes back to the fall of 2010.  On a Brewers Forum, there was a lot of discussion that WMLW has been anything BUT quality reception:

http://brewersfandemonium.yuku.com/topic/23339

One has to question, are we going to see true HD, or upcoverted HD?  How much will be in HD?

Does WMLW have the technology and people behind it to make this work for Wisconsin?  Time will tell.

They've probably pushed further mainly because of the Brewers and WIAA coverage, and that their big get for the year The Big Bang Theory is also in HD (but for now has to have HD promos on 58, but pan-in-scan on 41, which for now is probably embarrassing to them when the show is killing in the syndicated ratings).

Most of their weekend drama and Byron Allen programming is also in HD, but the court shows have been eternally slow to convert to the format on the syndicator's end (they will probably be the last program type in HD, by far, judging from Swift Justice actually moving back to SD, and judging from the...talent on those shows, it's probably merciful they haven't :rof:).

Now I'm just hoping I hear about Charter upgrading WMLW to HD sometime soon so nobody in the market's left behind. In 2012 the WIAA finals should air in the state's largest market in HD.

It will be nice to finally see the Crew in HD on WMLW in something other than MLBN highlights or lookins.  Buh bye screen door SD.

Honestly,

The whole sub-channel thing concerns me.  I think this is one of the first sub channels to get HD, or supposed HD.  The problem is that in terms of reception, Sub-channels are almost ALWAYS sub-standard, because they are feeding of the bandwidth from the main channel, which in this case is CBS 58, or 5 SD/10005HD on TWC.

I am uncertain if just by moving to HD for WMWL that the station is going to have pristine quality HD shows.  They might just do a Turner Classic Movies HD thing, where the screen fills up at 16x9 with better up-converts than the SD channel, but very little if anything on TCM is in actual HD.  However, this may be due to the age of some of the movies and the cost involved in getting them to true HD.  However,  I give credits to them showing films in their original aspect ratios.

I think the ONLY things that we will probably see in "Just OK' HD quality for awhile are going to be Brewers games and other live sports events such as basketball.  Much of WMLW's stuff is syndicated SD content as it is.

I thought WMLW had its own frequency it's been wasting? Channel 13? 41.1?

They've stuck a single SD channel there and wasted all that potential bandwidth, whilst bogging down CBS 58 with multiple subchannels.

Are they really going to try and put WMLW HD on CBS's frequency when they've already got 13?

This all seems to be coming too little too late. Since FSN saved money from the NBA lockout, they used that to purchase the rights to the 16 Brewers games that would've been broadcasted on WMLW.

I was assuming they would be running as high as they could on 41.1 but keeping 58.2 at the abysmal bitrate they're now running.

I can't see how they could try to increase 58.2 and keep a straight face when viewers complained about the rest of 58.  Although I have to wonder how many people with functioning cortexes are tuned in to 58.3 and 58.4 on a regular basis.

Hopefully somebody in the know will comment.

A requirement for a professional sports franchise whose stadium they play in is subsidized by TAX DOLLARS should have all or most of their games available for free over the air!

More reasons to stop supporting this greedy nonsense.

The only thing more pathetic than watching the same sports game played over and over but with different colored uniforms and marginally different outcomes is listening to it described via an audio only medium.

There is literally nothing less important in life than memorizing sports scores.

Yes, it was a boilerplate WIAA ad, but at the end is the place where the affiliates put their information, and the regular WMLW VO was stating it would be in HD.

Also today WMLW began to display a permanent on-screen bug during programming that certainly is higher quality than their bugs used to be (or for those who remember when 58 bugged CBS programming in the late 90's with the three-color 58 square), so the process is being suggested as almost done.

I got a kick out of the errant preacher report on tonight's 9 PM newscast; they used an "unregistered" (watermarked) program to get some lousy looking online video into their report.

Not that they can control the quality of something from YouTube, but they probably could have ponied up for the shareware fee!

I have not seen it added yet.  Maybe go into Favorite channels and enter like 1800 to scroll to that point.  Now, use the Page +/- button to scroll down to somewhere between 1800 to 1999.  Somewhere within there there will be about 15 channels that say Test with numbers on them.  I just can't remember if the test channels are in the 1800 range or the 1900 range.

I would say go through the channels that say Testxx (where X represents a number.)  If you find WMLW in those test channels, make a note of the test channel location and post it here.   Thanks!

Charter is doing a big shift around tonight of the Weigel stations in the QAM table (aka I get to play with Windows Media Center later), which means they're adjusting for something (can't confirm if WMLW is on HD yet; a chat with a support guy just keeps leading me to some 'who cares' announcement about Jewelry TV). SilliconDust is still showing 13.1 in 480i too.

I just scanned through, and in my quick check I didn't see anything in HD in the 1900 channel range. Mostly a bunch of standard def channels (I saw ShopNBC and HGTV in the batch, among others) as well as some of the "message" channels Time Warner uses in place of channels that have moved or been discontinued.

Direct To Tech responded back that the local site said that "We have no official launch because WMLW is not advertising as being in HD yet.  I directed the tech team to the local announcement in the channel changes:

http://www.timewarnercable.com/Midwest/support/policies/channelchange.html

And said that the date should be changed and reflected on the website for when the launch is ready, or the information should be taken down if WMLW is not ready for HD broadcast.  Speculation is that TWC planned on permission to carry the channel in HD, but WMLW delayed the launch date because they are not ready yet.  TWC has been very good about sticking with those channel notices and changes, so I would say that the ball is in WMLW's court now, and it looks like that ball may be showing in SD for some time.  I want to see if a new date is planned.

Lost in the fun that was the Hearst/Time Warner catfight was that Weigel is doing the last of their changes to put both WMLW and WYTU in HD. According to Dudek in the Journal-Sentinel (http://www.jsonline.com/entertainment/tvradio/wisntv-parent-time-warner-settle-feud-over-fees-ep66d72-163133086.html), WMLW and WBME will switch around channels on August 7. I don't know exactly how (it's not explained in the article and a better explanation hasn't come in a comment where I asked for more info), but I'm assuming parsing the text that WMLW will go to 49.1 in HD, while the Me-TV schedule will go to digital 13 and 58.2 in SD, and now we'll get WMLW-TV 49 and WBME-CD/CA 41.

Meanwhile WYTU launches by next week in HD on their LP digital 17 (mapping to 63.1) in time for the Olympics and their soccer coverage, along with the Packers pre-season in Espanol (which is the first I've heard of that), at least according to 58 on their newscast tonight. Don't know anything yet about cable coverage of WYTU in HD though, or if 49.4 will remain Telemundo.

And I'm just assuming WMLW-CA and WYTU-LP will continue to carry WMLW's schedule and MeTV until the transmitters finally conk out on those analog dinosaurs.

It served the purpose of trojan-horsing 49 and Telemundo's signals throughout the market at least and getting the national Me-TV model down, but yes, entirely too long.

Lo- power 13-1 WMLW's old digital channel no longer appears, at least at my location. That would involve intelligent spectrum usage which we all know the networks are incapable of.

I saw WMLW show up on my Channel Master box testerday- I had never been able to see it previously (except on WDJT 58.2).  According to the FCC sheet, it's 150 KW and fairly high on the tower.  At 70 miles away, I have a DB8 in the attic aimed at Milwaukee, and it is almost 24/7 reliable on all of the full-power UHFs (including the "problem children" WISN, WVCY, & WBME, but not WYTU).
I'm hoping that this new WMLW signal will be that regular, especially if it goes HD.

I saw it last night via RF48.  Kaley Cuoco sure looks good in HD.
Now maybe they can get the Brewers back on OTA for next season.

WMLW's been added to TWC's HD Tier, Digital Channel 1007.  We have three instances of WMLW now.  Channel 7, 982 (I think.) and now Channel 1007.  Drooping one of those standard channels for WMLW, would open up some bandwidth.  What do they show in HD?

It looks like all of thier rerun shows are now in HD (at least the ones that were produced in HD).  Big Bang Theory, LAw & Order, Tyler Perry Browns, and Dr. Phil are all HD now on WMLW.
I'm not sure about the "58 news at 9" program, I didn't see it last night, but I would guess it's HD as well.
