On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / MTV2 compression levels
Thursday Jan 16, 2003, 04:10:55 PM
I'm a TWC customer, and EVERY time I've gone to watch anything on MTV2, the picture is very blocky because of the compression.  I'm curious if anyone has any experience with this channel on other cable systems or satellite, whether this is how MTV2 sends the signal, or if it's TWC doing added compression to it after the signal is received.  The past few days there have been some live bands on at 8pm, and I'm really getting annoyed with how horrible the picture looks.  Anyone else with any input?

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / try a reset
Saturday Jan 11, 2003, 01:21:22 AM
For those who have had problems, you've probably already tried this...but in case you haven't, this worked for me.

Try unplugging the box for a few minutes and then plug it back in and power it up.  It'll go through and connect itself to the network again.  We have 2 boxes in the house, 1 HD box and 1 normal digital.  The normal digital box is the one that gave us problems twice, and both times we just unplugged it and reconnected, and then the movie worked fine.  It's worth a try if you haven't already.

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / But the new 4200HD will
Tuesday Jan 07, 2003, 10:52:42 PM
Here's what I pulled off the Scientific Atlanta about their new Explorer 4200HD box...it'll do everythign you asked about.  Now we only have to cross our fingers that TWC will supply them.  I already asked the question on the TWC forum, and the reply I got said they'll pass the info on the guy who orders equipment to see if they plan to get 'em.
**************

The Explorer 4200HD home gateway will be able to display video at user selectable scan rates of 480i, 480P, 720P, or 1080i out of the HDTV outputs. In addition, the user will be able to stretch and zoom the video picture to maximize the viewable area on HDTV displays and scale HDTV video within the program guide. The Explorer 4200HD home gateway will be capable of simultaneously displaying an HD image while down-converting it to SD via the NTSC outputs. This will allow subscribers to output HD content to their VCRs in SD format. Plus, the Explorer 4200HD complies with the EIA-708 closed captioning specification. The new home gateway will include a USB port, an optional DVI HDTV digital interface with HDCP high-bandwidth digital content protection and an optional IEEE 1394 digital interface with 5C copy protection capability.

In addition, the Explorer 4200HD home gateway, with an internal dual-capable DOCSIS/DAVIC modem and high-performance CPU, graphics and memory interfaces, will deliver digital interactive services such as on-demand TV, Web browsing and t-commerce at rapid speeds. The device can also be utilized to deliver high-speed data to home networks and personal computers.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Audio Dropout on TWC locals
Thursday Dec 12, 2002, 11:45:00 PM
I still experienced audio dropouts on 504 during the Wallflowers performance on Leno, and afterwards I checked out PBSHD on 710 and had lots of dropout on their loop (I think the gospel singers were on at that point).

I know earlier we were all told there was an upgrade done over the cable line to fix a known problem with the Scientific Atlanta 3100HD boxes, but does anyone know how to be SURE the upgrade took effect?  I mean, does anyone know how to show the software or firmware versions...a code or some setting that will display that info.  That would at least tell us if TWC's upgrade actually took effect.

Mike

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / i need some advice....please!
Monday Dec 23, 2002, 07:28:00 PM
I had a similar problem with lots of ghosting and snow on the locals (4, 6, 12).  Time Warner came out and put new connectors on all my cable splices (including the one off the pole outsite...that is where they think the problem was), and that fixed it quite well.  I still get a little ghosting on Fox 6, but it's very watchable).  All I had to do to get it fixed was call customer service and complain about ghosting and snow, and they sent someone over a few days later.  I'm in Waukesha, in case that matters.

Kerry,

Earlier in this thread you mentioned that the head engineer at Time Warner found that there is a software upgrade for the ScientificAtlanta box.  What I didn't quite understand from your post is if that upgrade is something they do on THEIR equipment, or if it's meant for the boxes in our homes.  If it's for the boxes in our homes, do they know yet if the upgrade can happen over the cable system, or if we need to order a service call?  I looked for the post you said you put in the Technical problems forum, but didn't see it, hence why I'm asking here.

kjnorman, I have the same problem with cutting out audio on the HD channels with the 3100HD box from TWC.  If you happen to find out anything more about the problem, please let us all know.

By the way, y'all have a great thing going here at the forum.  I've been reading the threads on this board for a long time, but never really posted anything.  Maybe that'll change now that us TWC customers actually have something to watch now!
