I will go and watch 58 on my Hughes E86, as will one of my friends on his DTC-100, and another on his Sony SATHD300, and another on his Samsung SIR-T165, and another on his Mitsubishi Promise Module, and the last friend of mine who has an HD set.. a brand new RCA DLP set that tunes in 58 just fine.

Uh, you're not watching 58, your watching 1-1, which is really the heart of the matter.  Channel 58 should be broadcasting as channel 58.  Yes, someday their analog signal will go away, and there will be no more channel 58. . . or analog channel 4, 6, 12, etc.  They're all going away.  That's the whole point of digital.  But, they are still supposed to keep their old analog channel number.

This was done to benefit both the stations and the viewers.  Who wants to rebrand their entire identification?  Why would they want to confuse their viewers (especially older folks, who are going to have to be dragged into this change, kicking and screaming).

WDJT is wrong.  They shouldn't be broadcasting on channel 1.

Now, on to Dish.  The 811, as released, is a piece of junk.  I've been unhappy with it since day one.  The $149 price sounded good, but it's an example of getting what you pay for.  Dish should have realized that some scofflaw stations are staking an unjustified claim on channel one, and they should have allowed it to be used as a channel instead of assigning it to the rear inputs.

But, that doesn't mean that 58 isn't wrong also.

Why does it have to be one or the other - clearly they can both be wrong.  Yes, 58 has been admirable for their adoption to HDTV (although I'd like to see a higher power signal and less multi-casting - but I digress), but that doesn't mean that everything they do is OK.  They are clearly wrong in this case.

I'd really like to see a response from Jim Hall on this, but he seens to be ignoring this thread.

I think Crumb Snatcher is right.  It's a screw up  by Dish and a screw-over by 58.

Yes, digital transmissions allow stations to broadcast on virtual channels, but that channel number (referenced as the major channel) is supposed to be their NTSC channel number, not just any old number they can grab out of the air.  Otherwise, channel 58 could call themselves channel 6, since most of us can't get WITI anyway.

According to the PSIP guideline published by the ATSC:

QuoteThe major channel number is used to group all channels that are to
be identified as belonging to a particular broadcaster (or particular identifying number such as 12
in this case). In the U.S., the NTSC RF channel is required to be used as a major channel number.

If anyone wants to read the whole document (it's pretty darn long), you can find it at:

Program and System Information Protocol Implementation Guidelines for Broadcasters

WDJT has decided to hijack channel 1-1 in an attempt to lure stupid viewers to their station.  If anything, this is going to annoy joe six-pack and/or his wife, because now they have to remember that 58 is really 1.

It's not a very smart strategy.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Channel 58 HD
Sunday Feb 01, 2004, 03:56:37 PM
Tom,

Unfortunately, the 811 doesn't allow for this, it's assigned channels 1-1 and 1-2 to the rear inputs of the receiver.  I don't think the Dish people were aware of the channel 1-1 problem (along with a lot of other 811 problems).

People that have called Dish to complain have been told it's a local station issue, and that viewers are SOL.

Jim,

I'd also like to thank you for participating in this forum, it shows a commitment and concern for your supporting viewers - which sets you apart from most of yor local competition.

I would like to know when you plan on mapping to channel 58-1, 58-2, etc.  I have a Dish Network receiver which prevents from watch your stations under the current channel 1-1 mapping.  I came up with a temporary work-around, which isn't working for me today.  Sadly, this means missing the Super Bowl, which I've been looking forward to for months.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Channel 23?
Sunday Feb 01, 2004, 11:49:19 AM
John,

I think it was WITI, I never thought about a MI station.  The signal strength was hovering around 50, just high enough to lock on, but not high enough to view.

It gave me 33-1, 33-2, and 33-3.  Today the sigal strength is back to zero.

Thanks, Greg.

I live in little old Random Lake, so it must be the Green Bay station that I was almost getting.  When I checked it later in the day, the signal was just about gone, so it must have been a fluke with the weather.

I was almost getting channel 6's digital signal also, so if the cold weather we had wasn't good for anything else, at least it improved my reception.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Channel 23?

I'm sorry if this has been answered before, but the search function won't let me do a two character search.

I'm getting a sigal strength of 49% for this channel, which isn't quite strong enough to lock on.  Does anyne know what station this is?

Thanks,

Scott

Timothy,

Try turning the 811 off, and then back on.  It usually takes my tuner about three seconds before it completely locks onto the channel 46 signal.  As soon as the strength bar turns green, hit enter.

Maybe I'm lucking out a little, since my signal strength only hits about 68% for 46, which might give me a little extra time.  When I first came up with this, it took about 20 tries, but tonight I got it on the second try.  The night before it would automatically show channel 1 also, which is why I'm suggesting you turn off  the 811 and try again.

Thanks for the welcome, Dave.

I'm glad that I was able to find a work around, but I hope 58 decides to do the right thing, and start using chanel 58 soon.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Local News in HD?
Tuesday Jan 27, 2004, 06:08:18 PM
Twenty to Thirty years?  Yikes!  I can't wait that long.  I want everything in HD now!

OK, I can wait a while, but I'd guess it'll be closer to ten years.  Technology is moving so quickly these days that I think it will be a much faster transition than color was.

I'm surprised that more commercials aren't being shot in HD, just to make them stand out against the blah, old SD stuff.

Any local anchors concerned about their skin problems can just have one of those Barbara Walters lenses put on the HD cameras.  That should take care of it.

Hi guys (and ladies - if any are reading this).

I've been a long-time lurker, but this is my first post.  The 811 is my first, permanent HDTV receiver.  I've had a Zenith 420 and Motorola HDT-100.  Both went back to the store.

Anyway, I've been bummed thinking that I'm going to miss the Super Bowl because of this stupid channel 1 problem, so I decided to come up with a solution.

I originally posted this information on the Satellite Guys website.  Here's a link to it:

Temporary Fix for Dish 811 Channel 1.1 Mapping Problem

I hope this helps someone else out.  I know what I'll be doing Sunday!
