Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / TV Guide Grid Data Missing?
Tuesday Nov 29, 2011, 06:03:08 PM
All my data is back, too.

Thanks to WDJT and all those who contacted them to get this fixed!

Quote from: Jimboy;58047Have the same issue with my 60" Sony. I get the data (or did get it) from CBS58.
AFAIK Dan Dyer no longer works for them........
That's too bad.  Dan had spent a lot of time working on this during the switchover.  He was really responsive to solving the problem and replying to my messages.

Dang.

Quote from: Jack 1000;58046Hi,

Who is your provider? (TWC, U-Verse, Dish Network, Direct TV, or OTA with external equipment?)  Give box manufacturer and model number if known.

Jack
OTA with a Sony DHG-HDD500.

There was a pretty big interruption during the digital switchover (since the Sony had been designed to work with analog data), but that was solved within a couple of weeks, and it's been rock solid since then.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / TV Guide Grid Data Missing?
Thursday Nov 24, 2011, 10:01:33 AM
Has anyone else experienced problems with their TV Guide listings for the past two or three days?  Until now, everything had been rock steady, but now all the listings only show "No Listing" in the entire program grid.

Well, the good news is that Live Well won't be showing up as an HD subchannel on WISN.

WTMJ's HD is so poor already due to the current subs, losing Cool and adding Live Well won't have much impact.

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / In the Market for a new TV

Quote from: Tivoman44;57760I am saving up for a TV.  I love my Toshiba LCD Regza (37 inch).  I want one bigger (between 46 and 50 inches).  I need a little refresher course into what to look for.

DLP is a dying technology. . .
You may not want to discount it, though.  Judged on a cost per inch basis, it simply can't be beat.  Right this minute on the Vann's website, you can get a 60" set for under $575, including shipping.  Mitsubishi is going to be concentrating on higher sized DLP sets, so they're clearancing out the smaller ones.

There are disadvantages, but that's true with all the technologies out there.  I'm not sure if I'd recommend one without seeing it in person, but the value is outstanding.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / WISN goes HD tonight 6/28
Tuesday Jun 28, 2011, 08:28:05 PM
I think I spotted one remote spot that was in HD, all the others appeared to be SD.

The studio shots looked OK, but the lighting looked a bit dark, resulting in kind of a muddy look.

Quote from: Xizer;57464If they ever add subchannels though it's going to start looking awful. Let's hope that day never comes... *shudder*
There have been recent posts on other forums about ABC affiliates adding the Live Well network.  There would be little reason for them to go to 1080i for that reason, though, since 720p does better with multicasting.

For the past week, I thought it would be rather ironic if WISN made the leap to HD, and then also decided to add a subchannel.

Hey, look at the bright side - you've got a ready-made excuse to upgrade!  Most of us married folks have to think of some creative reason  to convince our spouses that it's time to go shopping.

While 46" was a pretty good size four years ago, it's on the small size now.  Go bigger!

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / WISN 12 News... new set, no HD
Thursday Apr 28, 2011, 10:12:14 PM
For the vast majority of local viewers, the current WISN newscast probably looks like it's already in HD.  Afterall, it's widescreen.  ;)

Not to mention that one of the other local stations that loves to remind us that they're news is in HD regularly shows live remote footage that's clearly SD, or 4x3 material that's stretched to 16x8.  That's in spite of the little HD bug at the bottom of the screen.

I'm in favor of HDTV as much as anyone else here, but we're in the minority.  I'd rather that they concentrate on giving us high-quality network programming, where a lot of money has been spent on Hollywood production values, instead of insisting on multicasting old or irrelevant content.  That's a bigger issue to me than fleeting local news.

Of course, ideally we'd get both.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / PBS HD is Horrible.

Quote from: wxndave;56960I have been a member of this site since 2002.  I have always posted information to help the members of this site.  If you don't want here how it work then I won't post any more.  It's no wonder why broadcast professionals don't want to be involved here.

Please don't let the posts of a few members discourage you from posting.  These threads are always improved by professionals that take the time to pass on their knowledge, and the vast majority of us appreciate the input and the learning opportunity.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / PBS HD is Horrible.

Quote from: wxndave;56956What broadcasters really need is MPEG 4 1080p as a transmission standard.
I would love to see this, but is there an actual chance of this happening within the next decade?  If locals started transmitting MPEG4, viewers would have to have a way of decoding the signals.  I don't know if there are any consumer-level tuners capable of decoding those signals.

This would be easier on the cable and sat side of things, but even Dish has a lot of receivers out there that are still limited to MPEG2 content.

Just look at the furor over the switch to digital, how long it was planned, and the delays.  Can you imagine if all those people, and those that bought new digital TVs or boxes, were to be told that they'd have to buy new tuners in order to see digital programs?  I can hear the cries already.

It would solve a lot of the compression problems, and allow multicasting without diminishing HD quality (unless used to excess), but I can't see it happen for practical reasons.

Quote from: ArgMeMatey;56304Being the devil's advocate here, if they do that they will lose some "surfing" traffic from 58-1 and 4-1. In other words channel surfers would have to surf down through 55.1, 2, 3 to reach 49.x.  One could reasonably argue that no one would watch 58-4 if it weren't between 4-1 and 58-3!

Also Time Warner does not currently provide 49.x on Clear QAM, although they have WBME on midband 19.

Any other reasons (besides inertia) that they wouldn't make a move like this?  Have they got grand plans for the 49 subchannels?
The channel numbers are only virtual, though.  While not positive, I don't think there's any reason they couldn't use the actual channel 49 frequency, but assign 58.2, 58.3, and 58.4 as the virtual numbers.

That would solve both the bandwidth and surfing issues.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / CBS58 HD is terrible (Packers game)

Quote from: WPXE ION;56272Do you all sit in front of your TV with a magnifying glass looking for the slightest imperfection?

WOW.
I wish it took a magnifying glass to see these problems.  Did you look at the screen capture I posted?  How could you not see the flaws in that picture?  They're not slight imperfections, they're ugly and obvious.

And unnecessary.

That's what the promise of HDTV was all about, huh?
