Milwaukee HDTV Programming / SDV Channels
Friday Jun 15, 2012, 03:34:51 pm
I just switched back to TWC for TV after being with DIRECTV for the past few years (install is next week).  Anyone know if the majority of the channels are on SDV nowadays?  I have a TV with a cablecard slot but it won't work with a tuning adapter, so I'm just wondering if it would even be worth getting a card for that TV...
Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Questions about Charter
Tuesday Sep 13, 2011, 10:18:01 pm
I'm in the process of helping a family member get an HDTV for the first time, setting it up, and getting the HD service from Charter.  She has Charter digital service, but currently doesn't have an HD box.

As far as pricing, does Charter charge extra for HD service?  I didn't really get a straight answer from them, though they told me an HD box is $10 per month.  I don't know if that's more than a standard box or not.  Are the HD boxes Motorola like the SD boxes.. along with that crappy IPG that looks a little like this: http://files.myopera.com/elcid73/files/chartercable.jpg ?

Is there any way around the "installation fee" other than going to the Charter office and getting it yourself?  I was told they would charge $50 to come out and swap the box.
Latest News / Directv hd gui

The new GUI just got released to the CE beta testers.  It should be released in the next couple of months to the public.

Looks pretty good compared to what we have now:
Yard Sale / 26" Vizio LED Edgelit LCD TV
Monday May 16, 2011, 09:07:41 pm
I'm selling a Vizio M261VP 1080p TV.  Specs can be found here: http://www.vizio.com/via-hdtvs/m261vp.html.

It has built in 802.11n WiFi and has "apps" such as Netflix, Vudu, Amazon on Demand, Hulu Plus, and many more.  Comes with everything in the box (manual, remote, power supply), including the original box.  I purchased it in December, but currently need the money so that's why I'm selling it.  It's in like new condition.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Free HD Access - DIRECTV

DIRECTV is offering free HD Access for life to new customers.  If you're a current customer, you can call and get 24 months free HD Access ($10 credit per month).  I had no problems getting it... took about 10 minutes on the phone and I was set.  You might have to go through a couple of CSRs to get it.  You also need to be signed up for auto bill pay.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / DirecTV Moving Channels
Tuesday Mar 16, 2010, 09:11:18 pm
If you haven't heard yet, DirecTV will gradually be moving premium channels around over the next month: http://www.directv.com/channelchanges/.

Premiums are getting spread out and the HD Extra pack will be consolidated to a single range.  They are probably making room to add the full HBO/Cinemax lineup in HD whenever D12 is ready.
Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / Cat5 Extenders
Friday Sep 18, 2009, 05:37:43 pm
Does anyone have any experience with something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/COMPONENT-VIDEO-STEREO-AUDIO-Balun-CAT5-Cable-EXTENDER_W0QQitemZ250442858891QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a4f8ec18b&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 ?

Basically what I want to do is send the component out from my HR22 in the living room to my bedroom TV.  I have HDMI hooked up to my living room receiver/TV... I'm assuming all outputs are active on the DVR.  I'm just wondering how much it degrades the signal.  The cable run will probably be 25-50 ft.
Yard Sale / Silicondust HDHomeRun
Wednesday May 20, 2009, 12:16:33 am
I'm thinking about selling my HDHomeRun tuner (http://www.silicondust.com/products/hdhomerun_atsc).  I've had it for over two years and it's still working great.  I've been using it with Windows 7 Media Center for the past few months with no problems.

Asking $100.  PM if interested.
Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Grounding a Dish
Thursday May 07, 2009, 07:02:14 pm
I'm planning on getting DirecTV soon... probably going to end up with the Slimline 3.  I read a manual awhile back for the 18" dish and it said that all you need is a ground rod pounded into the ground for proper grounding.  Does NEC now require that the dish be connected to the main electrical ground?  The location where the dish has to go is nowhere near where the electricity enters the building so I'm wondering if they'll refuse the install.  The only thing it's close to is my air condition condenser.. not sure if there's something around there that it could be grounded to.  Otherwise, can it be grounded to a water pipe?  The cable will be entering the building through my laundry room, so there are pipes in there...
Anyone else find that Discovery HD is usually unwatchable?  I recorded Time Warp last week and it gave me a black screen for most of the recording, and didn't finish recording the whole show.  I recorded/tried to watch Storm Chasers tonight and it was fine for maybe 10-15 minutes... minor glitches, but then all of sudden constant dropouts, pixelation.  I'm watching the encore now, and the first 10 minutes are just constant skipping audio, freezing, pixelation, etc.  I haven't noticed this much on other channels.
Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / SWM Slimline?
Monday Aug 11, 2008, 08:54:05 pm
Anyone know if D* is using the Slimline dish with the SWM LNB in installs yet?  I don't really have a place to put an SWM8.. so I think the LNB would be best in my situation.
Milwaukee HDTV Programming / TWC Testing SDV
Saturday Jul 19, 2008, 10:50:28 pm
I stumbled upon some SDV test channels on TWC... channels 1875 through 1899.  They are hidden from the guide, so you will have to manually go to them.  It looks like a bunch of them are from channels 2-99... so maybe we'll see them transition the channels to digital in the near future.  The only channels I could actually see video on were 1876 and 1886... the rest said they were unavailable, or not subscribed.
Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Unsuccessful Dish Install
Thursday May 29, 2008, 05:58:33 pm
So I decided to order Dish since I can't stand TWC.  I just moved to a condo and it faces mostly north, but I called the condo/apartment maintenance guy and he said there would be no problems getting it.  The install was today with a 12-5 window, so I took a half day vacation at work.  The installer came, as I expected, right at 5.  I told him where to put the Dish as instructed by the maintenance person.. but part of the building was blocking the 129* satellite where the HD is.  The installer called maintenance and was told an alternate location to put it.  Apparently the cable was supposed to come through my kitchen window, which the screen wouldn't come off.  The guy mentions that this is what we call a cluster@#$% of an install and says he needs to go outside to think.  After awhile another installer shows up, they come back in, check some more and pretty much say that this would be a no go.

I suggested they run the cable through the window that is in my basement storage unit and run it up to my unit.  The previous owner of this condo ran cable from TWC down to the basement storage unit so I figured it would be no issue.  They said that it would be too hard to get to my place with all of the splitters and wires that TWC ran .  After that they agreed that it would be impossible, that I'll have to go with TWC and left.

Were they just too lazy to install or what?  They just did not seem like they wanted to be there or do anything about it.  Should I try a local installer instead?  Mine was through DNSC I'm assuming, since I ordered directly from Dish.  Basically the restrictions that I have on the install is that no holes can be drilled unless it's within my unit and the cable pretty much can't be seen (can't run up walls, over the roof, etc.).
Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / 36-1 Audio Issues
Sunday May 18, 2008, 09:50:57 pm
Anyone else have audio issues with 36-1?  I'm watching it more now that I only have OTA and the audio seems to cut in and out with certain shows.  It seems to only be on certain HD shows.. the SD upconverted ones are fine.
Milwaukee HDTV Programming / TBS-HD looks to actually be HD now
Wednesday Apr 02, 2008, 06:45:43 pm
I just noticed in the past couple of days that TBS isn't doing stretch-o-vision anymore on the shows that were shot in HD.  This is the first time since the playoffs that I've seen anything in HD on the channel.
On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Good place to buy bulk cable?
Friday Mar 21, 2008, 08:46:01 pm
Are there any local places to buy bulk cable?  If not, where's the best place to buy online?  I'm mainly looking for solid cat6 and coax to run through walls.

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / Dish Question
Saturday Mar 01, 2008, 06:02:04 pm
I'm possibly looking at switching to E* sometime in the near future.  I'm probably gonna go with the ViP722 receiver and the $29.99 Dish HD package without locals.  Which dish are they using nowadays for new installs?  Are they still using the Superdish?
Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Dish HD - $29.99 / month
Friday Feb 08, 2008, 12:02:43 am
Looks like DISH is offering an HD only package for $29.99 a month:

No need for any base packages.
