Latest News / Wisconsin AB-721 introduced - new PEG provisions
Saturday Feb 13, 2010, 11:07:56 AM
Quote from: budda;54902Bill is in part because of downturn in economy. This means when the economy turns around they will drop the tax? B/S, Like everybody else, just cut salary's and people. Sorry but if this happens in 3 years it will be 25% not 1%. Called getting your foot in the door. JMO

The reason for the bill is to SAVE what we currently have in regards to PEG stations. Its just recent laws were approved to eliminate them.  I volunteer in programming a PEG station in Muskego which is carried over Time-Warner Cable in Muskego, ch. 14. I DON'T GET PAID for programming it. I do it because I love programming a TV station.  However the Franchise Fees you see on your monthly cable bill goes for the operation costs of operating ch. 14 as well as ch. 25. I shall not forget ch. 13 in which I have nothing to do with it as its operated from the Muskego-Norway School Resource Center and someone else is in charge for ch. 13.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / WVCY-TV 30 is now 24/7
Sunday Jan 03, 2010, 03:04:14 PM
Looking through this week's TV Cue magazine, WVCY-TV ch. 30 has 24 hours of scheduled religious programming in this week's TV paper.

I predicted that eventually this would happen with the full switch over to DTV and their new transmitter.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / Fox 6 Yankee vs Angels Game 2
Saturday Oct 17, 2009, 09:53:46 PM
I am getting the Game 2 broadcast of the Yankee - Angels Game via 6.1 in Standard Definition.  Is anyone else?

I noticed after 9:00pm, Fox 6 News at 9 is airing on 6.2.

Quote from: foxeng;53590That is already happening in Salt Lake City.

You got to be Kidding!   All we need is more advertising!  I suppose it will happen here very soon.  Hold onto your horses, its coming to a station near you.

You can call the station and complain, and they won't listen.

Quote from: troyriley;53587However, if the towers were west of the city on higher ground, the extra height would compensate for the distance away from the lake. The fish and the few boaters out there would still be able to watch TV, either from Milwaukee, or from Grand Rapids.

Fish watch TV???  I suppose if they do they would watch Fishing shows so they can learn to know what is bait vs food and be taught to look for anything that might have a metal hook and line connected to it to learn to stay away from something like that and go and teach them in thier schools.

Its no wonder why fish aren't biting like they used to.

How about WISN-TV ch. 12? when they have a non HD program on they use similar sidebars.

As for coverage going out to Lake Michigan, it isn't being wasted. There are some fancy boats and ships that have TVs on them and people on those boats do watch TV.

Quote from: jjallou;53558Just noticed on my DigitalStream CECB box an audio only channel 34-90. It sounds like WISN's audio or the same as 12-1. I haven't tried re-scanning my HD set yet to see if that gets it as well. Wonder what the plans are?

Interesting and 34-90?  Well channel 12 does broadcast on the frequencies of UHF Channel 34.  The same exact channel where the old analog Fond du Lac indie used to transmit on back in the early 70s. I haven't seen this...I'll have to check it out.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / WITI FOX 6 New Antenna
Friday Sep 11, 2009, 02:11:32 PM
They will avoid doing any power reductions or shut downs on Sunday due to the fact there are NFL games going on.  I believe 6 is carrying a NFL game. I wouldn't be surprised if it will be the Vikings game.

Quote from: Rick_EE;53396The question here was directed at GM's and engineers.  I tried to help by quoting someone in the technical side of the business.  Hopefully someone with direct knowledge can answer and end speculation.  All I can say is what I was told, anything else is just guessing.

My source did also say that the links are paid for by TWC and the satellite providers, not the stations.

You could be right.  If TWC and satellite providers are paying for the link then it must have been their decision, not the TV stations.  So if WTMJ-TV shuts down their DTV transmitter for maintenance during the wee hours of the morning, it will also mean losing WTMJ on cable and satellite.

Quote from: WITI6fan;53393They've probably paid to have the Fiber link restored, and probably have had microwave links to TWC installed on every other tower in the farm. :p

I find it hard to believe they would discontinue direct Fiber Optic Cable to TWC. But I suppose if WTMJ as well as WITI and WISN and probably WDJT have to pay and maintain that line.  But with the economy is bad as it has been, I suppose they would have to cut the cable and depend on TWC to receive the major network stations off the air.   This is terrible if thats the case.

Quote from: Rick_EE;53386The employee is a friend of mine.  I believe him.

He said they used to get the feed via direct feed.  Who is to say is hasn't changed since the storm?

It must have been more than a couple months ago, as it has been longer since the digital transition.  TMJ would not have been completly off air for a couple days in that time frame.

That depends on exactly what  the employee does there. Because the way or how ch. 4 is sent out or receive is really no concern or important issue to most employees at the station. Its only the concerns of the engineering and management staff regarding how ch. 4 signals are sent out.

No doubt ch. 4 feeds its signal to TWC via Fiber OPtic. Why would they change it back to receiving ch. 4 OTA?    The last thing you want is transmitter failure that would put ch. 4 out entirely as well as cable and satellite.  Should someone near the station accidently cut into the Fiber....the transmitter keeps going and TWC could temporarily switch to OTA until the Fiber Optic cable is fixed.

No down time is acceptable. WTMJ-TV MUST be all means provide 24/7 of continouis broadcasting. They are not allowed to sign off or stop broadcasting even between 12Mid and 5 AM.

Quote from: Rick_EE;53370I was told by an employee of channel 4 that DirectTV and TWC get their signals OTA.  It appears that TWC and DTV had to pay to maintain the feed, so they went OTA as a cost cutting measure.

When we had that bad storm 2 months ago it knocked WTMJ-DT transmitter off the air for a day or so. While it was OTA, WTMJ-TV was broadcasting over TWC cable with no problems. Therefore I don't believe TWC receives WTMJ-TV/DT OTA...very much fiber Optic Cable direct from the studio.

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Timewarner outage on 8/23/09
Tuesday Aug 25, 2009, 10:57:19 AM
Thought maybe my computer or something was going crazy at 10pm Sunday night. No email, no web service except Facebook...thats all that worked was Facebook. I was puzzled to say the least.  Glad it wasn't my computer this time.  I think RR customers should receive some credit for this on their next bill.

I noticed here at work my DXer account email did not load onto my pc last night, but all over email accounts loaded just fine.

There is a smooth jazz FM station from Chicago that shows up there at 87.9 Mhz. Its  very powerful station.
