Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Lip Sync issue returns
Monday May 19, 2014, 01:45:41 PM
The lip sync issue on WIWN has returned.
#2
Quote from: LoadStar;59945I try to get it in, but apparently my antenna isn't good enough.

WIWN is lower power and on RF 5 so it needs an efficient VHF antenna.
I have a roof top UHF/VHF antenna and get it no problem, but I'm just at the Western County line.

I do have one TV with rabbit ears and it receives the weak signal but a scrambled picture.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Lip Sync issue fixed
Friday May 16, 2014, 12:04:04 PM
The chronic lip sync issue seems to have been resolved.

Has anyone told WIWN 68-1 how far off their lip sync is?

Has been a chronic issue for quite a while.

Does anyone even watch WIWN?

Today 8/7/13 I noticed that on two of my digital tuners channel 10 (WMVS) comes through on channel 8, virtual and RF.

On two other digital tuners channel 10 doesn't tune at all anymore.
I did a rescan and get nothing.

When I try to manually add a channel at RF 8, the virtual channel number that would normally fill as 10 is not found.

Signal strength is not an issue.
Any ideas what's going on?

Back to normal at noon.
Two tuners resolved the issue by themselves.
The other two I had to scan the individual channel to get the channel back.

I did some more testing and these are my observations.

First of all, my equipment is the following:
DISH ViP211k HD receiver with built in digital HD tuner for OTA locals. Rooftop antenna for locals. No signal strength issue.
DVR feature enabled with external USB HD.

When I view WMVS HD 10.1 live there isn't any problem with the audio. AV receiver shows Dolby Digital with a minus 3 offset.

When I view a DVR recording or step back live TV into the buffer (same as viewing a recording) I get a steady stream of audio dropouts. It's so bad that it's unwatchable.

When I tune 36.2 the SD simulcast of 10.1 (which also shows audio of DD with the same offset), I can view a recording without any audio dropouts. Furthermore, the audio dropouts when playing a recording are isolated to channel 10.1. No other OTA or satellite recording has this issue with my equipment.

So I've concluded that 10.1 HD has something in their signal that my DVR doesn't like.

If anyone else with a HD DVR (DISH, DirecTV, Tivo) cares to test this issue, please do and post your observations.

Note: Programming with dialog is harder to detect the dropouts by ear vs. programming with music or a more constant tone.
I can see every single dropout with my AV receiver because the DD re-establishes on the readout after each audio interruption.

Anyone else notice the horrendous amount of audio dropouts recently, during the various concerts broadcast during the MPTV fund raising programming? For example, the Straight No Chaser broadcast (12/5/11). The audio dropouts occurred regularly during the programming and during the channel 10 fund raising breaks. No problem with the picture, just the audio. My signal strength is not an issue.

This may be more noticeable when listening with an AV receiver vs. display speakers at normal volume.

I don't notice the problem on any other channel, including the music programming on PBS channel 36,
although I only briefly viewed channel 36 during one broadcast.

See my updated troubleshooting info below.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / My Samsung LCD bites the dust
Wednesday Jul 20, 2011, 05:31:18 PM
If you had a lightning strike earlier, and your display was later working shortly before the failure, it may not be related.

Samsungs are known for premature failure of the power supply capacitors.
I fixed mine for 4 bucks. Look for bulging caps on the power supply board.
Mine were barely bulging and not leaking. The top end should be completely flat.

Quote from: Tom Snyder;57593This really is no different than signing up for a Radio/TV station sponsored prize at their booth at State Fair, Summerfest, or at a remote broadcast at a local car dealership. The prize is the incentive for actively participating in a promotional event or vehicle.

It's different in that there is a public record of people that are forced to "like" a business, and the business may use that skewed number to their advantage. When you enter a contest on a piece of paper as you described above, you are not obliged to state that you like a particular business. Furthermore, when you enter a contest as you described, it generally would not have conditions that discriminate. (other than age)

Quote from: Tom Snyder;57593But you do have a point.. it's foolish for them to exclude non-facebook people from the contest.

BTW, according to Facebook's rules, you can't make "liking" the brand a condition for winning, and signups must be facilitated on a third party site, so technically you shouldn't even have to be on Facebook to enter. We work with Mitchell Airport on their social media stuff, and the contests we've done with them in the past allowed people to sign up on the Mitchell site.

I'll do some research and find out if Fox 6 is in fact doing this the same way, I'll post the link to entry here.

If you are correct, it seems as though Fox 6 may be violating FB rules.
Entrants in fact are forced to claim that they "like" Fox 6 on FB.
The entry link on the woobox site takes you to a FB login/registration page.

Quote from: techboywi;57583Agreed...  It isn't particularly fair to limit it to users of Facebook, or any other social media site, but it seems that is the way the tide is turning.   Remember when to enter a station contest, you had to send them a postcard?

I was close enough to send smoke signals.

In the past, contests usually had alternate ways to enter if the main method wasn't available to someone.
Believe it or not, some people that would want to enter a contest, don't even have an email address. :huh?:

Social networking can also become a detriment to a business. Those 750 million pairs of eyes could turn on you.
I could chose to express my opinion that I no longer "like" Fox 6 for a particular reason.

A good example is the recent Netflix subscription price increase (up to 60%) that resulted in their website blog to reach it's 5000 post limit with mostly negative comments. Netflix subscribers also used Facebook and Twitter to express their dissatisfaction.

Quote from: techboywi;57574A station here in Nashville, Ch 5 (WTVF) is doing the same thing now, they are running a Facebook contest with daily prizes.  You must be friends with them, and enter the contest every day by going to their FB page and clicking on a link.  A few months back, Ch. 4 (WSMV) ran a "Facebook Friend of the day" where they randomly drew from their friends list for a iPad2.

Facebook has over 750 million users, it is becoming a needed marketing tool for any "brand" wanting to get their name out there.  Its natural for ch.6 to embrace it, as so many other stations in the US have

750 million registered users.

How many are in the Fox 6 DMA, and how many in the DMA are registered on FB just to enter a contest and don't otherwise use the website.

A brilliant marketing tool so that someone in China is made aware of Fox 6 in Milwaukee. When Fox 6 has an internet feed, then it might be advantageous to market to those 750 million pairs of eyes that might watch.

To me, it's just plain wrong to have a contest limited to registered users of a particular website. Especially since the same contest didn't have that requirement in the past.

Quote from: ArgMeMatey;57563The usual suspects:
1.  A marketing intern charged with increasing social networking.
2.  An initiative/contest by Fox or local management ... perhaps with prizes or promotions for those who can increase their station's FB "friends" significantly.

I guess Fox 6 thinks that having more FB friends somehow makes them better than some other station.
They will probably try to raise their advertisement rates as the phony forced FB number increases.

Quote from: WPXE ION;57558So are they discriminating against those of us who dont have a facebook account? :(

That's right. Official rules state the various discriminators.

Must be a "legal" US resident, Age: 18 or older, Location: Must live in Fox 6 DMA (as defined by The Nielsen Company), and "Entrants may be required to become registered users of the website."

The "may" should read must, since you can't enter the contest unless you sign in to FB.

I always signed up for the cream puff contest on the Fox 6 website and was usually fortunate to be one of the 600 winners.

Why does Fox 6 promote Facebook so heavily?

They do seemingly have a lot of time in their lengthy redundant newscasts to fill with frill.

This year they are forcing people that already have registered email addresses on the Fox 6 website (for contests), to join Facebook to be able to enter the State Fair Cream Puff Giveaway. Ridiculous!

That would be like forcing someone to register with this forum website to enter a contest.

On May 18th I noticed that channel 58 signal strength has dropped considerably. No other channels are affected.
It's almost as low a signal strength as low power channel 63 (WYTU) and I'm about 8 miles from the tower farm.
Every other channel shows maximum signal strength.

Not a problem for me, just curious. Anyone know why, or noticed the same thing?

EDIT: Whatever they were doing is now fixed. Signal strength back to normal level. 05/30/2011
