CW 18 WVTV and My 24 WCGV are going to be moving their studios from 35th Street north of Capitol Drive to an office building on a 3 1/2 acre site on Park Place next to the Milwaukee Hilton Garden Inn.  The building was formerlly occupied by Rockwell Automation.  They will have the usual satellite dishes and will have a 150 foot relay tower on the site connectiing to tower on Humboldt.  So far it passed the ZND Committee gave unanimous approval and is expected to get the same at the Common Council meeting later this month.  If everything goes as planned they will start broadcasting from there by the end of 2013.

I was watching a few minutes of the CBS 58 Noon news and noticed grey sidebars were added.  That must mean that they finally got an HD switcher for the newscasts.

Does anyone have a complete list of what time each local station is turning off their analog signal on June 12th?

This afternoon I noticed that the digital channels on 10, 18, 24, 30, 36 and analog channel 38 were off the air this afternoon for a couple of hours because of the power failure on the north side of the city.  So the PBS, The CW, My Network, independent christian programming and Azteca operate their digital signals from the tower on the MATC property near where the power went out today.  Even with that situation happening, WTMJ, which is next to the MATC Tower, with a direct line to the power grid, stayed on the air even though everything else around them had no power.  The good thing is that the power got restored right before 5 pm.  Did anyone else notice this too?

I heard about the new channels 52-1 to 52-5 being added to the digital lineup and I cannot receive any of those channels.  I can get analog channel 52 but the digital shows no signal.  Is it that the digital signals aren't operational yet or am I too far away from picking up the digital signal?  Anyone else with the same issue?

Having street side TV news studios works very well in New York City and in Chicago and I would like to see that happen here in Milwaukee.  We have historic buildings in the 3rd and 5th Ward and others in the downtown area that would be great as a news broadcast facility.  Any locations that would be great for this?

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / HD at local news stations
Friday Sep 12, 2008, 10:55:36 AM
Here is what I know so far about news stations going to HD in Milwaukee by the Digital TV Transition in February 2009.  WTMJ is planning to go HD for local news sometime between mid January to early February 2009.  WITI looks like they are going to stretch the image to 720p for local news.  WISN looks to be in HD by November for the ratings period or in December for local news.  WDJT is the only station in town that currently shows their taped local Sunday morning magazine show in Full HD with their own equipment.  WISN currently rents HD equipment from WMVS/WMVT when they shoot things in HD like the Big Bang Fireworks.  So WDJT officially is the first local news station to broadcast a taped program shot in the field in Full HD with their own equipment.

This might be something that Journal Broadcast Group and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel might want to consider doing in order to become a strong company again.  Back in 2003 the newspaper moved their print facility out of downtown to West Milwaukee on Burnham east of Miller Park Way.  Now nearly 9.5 acres of vacant land are for sale next to and northwest of the printing press facility on the east side of Miller Park Way between Burnham and Mitchell Streets.  This property would move the offices out of downtown at 4th and State and the broadcast facilities on Capitol Drive to one centralized location.  The Village of West Milwaukee would benefit from this a lot and it would be a huge economic boost for the area if they ever decide on doing this in the future.

I was wondering if anyone knows if FOX 6 is going to be broadcasting from the studio in Full HD when the new Wake Up set debuts in June?  They are using their phone bank and the Ask Gus area for the morning set from what I can tell on their studio cams on their website.  Anyone knows more about this?

With the amount of problems going on with stock price, smaller profits, etc. within Journal Communications, it is a prime time for a takeover bid of Journal Broadcast Group from Journal Communications.  As many as 9 broadcast companies would find potential interest in some or all of the TV and Radio stations choices that Journal Broadcast Group offers.  The possible takeover companies are Barrington Broadcasting Group, Fisher Communications, Granite Broadcasting, Hubbard Broadcasting, Lin TV, Media General, Meridith Broadcasting, New Vision Television and Young Broadcasting.  So far no takeover bids have been made yet though this is probably the best move for the Journal Broadcast Group stations.

With the upgrade to digital TV it will end up putting more network owned channels that are now on cable and satellite on to local channels.  With the option of putting up to 99 sub-channels on each individual channel lineup you could end up having local TV compete against the cable and satellite companies for free.  Three stations in town already are doing some of this.  WTMJ has Weather Plus at 4-2, Milwaukee Public TV has 10-1 to 10-8 with PBS programs and WPXE has 55-2 to 55-4 with Ion network channels.  This option of putting more network owned channels on cable and satellite to local TV can happen by having MSNBC, CNBC, ShopNBC, USA, Sci-Fi and Universal HD going into the channel lineup for WTMJ.  Fox Business Channel, Fox News Channel, Fox Sports Net and Big Ten Network go to WITI.  ABC Family, Disney, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, ESPN Deportes go to WISN.  Also CSTV, Comedy Central, MTV, MTV2, and VH1 could end up on WDJT.  Its very possible for local stations to do this and give cable and satellite some real competition.

I went on the FCC website and looked at the 12/31/07 progress report posting for Digital TV conversion and noticed than no Milwaukee area TV stations are looking for an extension to installing equipment for the February 19, 2009 Digital TV change.  This means that all of the stations should meet the August 18, 2008 deadline for turning on the Digital channels in time for the analog to digital transition period.  This will mean that the TV stations by roughly August 1st will need to start fully promoting and having their logos updated to reflect their new channel number.

After 67 years of being on Capitol Drive this might be a change worth studying and exploring.   No plans have been made yet but  the 5th Ward would be a great and central location to consider for a new 21st century broadcast center for Journal Broadcast Group.  One site worth exploring is the 400 block of South Water Street between Florida and Bruce Streets.  The properties are for sale and listed by two different groups.  The first property is 412 S. Water and is currently owned by Hansen Storage.  They are the same company that sold all of the warehouses in the 3rd Ward on the river for the Erie Street Condos.  The property has 600 feet of river frontage on the Milwaukee River and currently has a warehouse used for boat storage.  The other property is directly across the street at 435 S. Water Street.  That is a 2.6 acre vacant lot listed for sale by CB Richard Ellis.

We will have to see if Journal Broadcast Group will look at being in a more central location to the region by being in the 5th Ward or stay on Capitol Drive.
