I new to the list but I have a FTA system (Free To Air) and I been watching HD Net & HD Net Moives for FREE:p
About Two Months ago they put it up for free, You can find it on
Satellite Galaxy 9 at 127.o W L tp 18
ch 33 HD Net
ch 49 HD Net Moives
So why should I pay for it when I get it Free, can't wait till this weekend for CART at Road America.
What is free to air? What type of equipment is needed for this?
Thanks in advance, and enjoy the racing.

It sounds like a cool idea, but I don't think it's available in the US.
http://www.freeview.co.uk/
Freeview channels and services are digital. You receive them through a rooftop aerial.
You pay a one-off equipment cost for a digital adapter that allows your existing television to receive the digital signals. This connects to your existing aerial socket and costs under £99.
Or you can buy an integrated digital TV with the adapter built in (an iDTV).
Then, once you are set up to receive Freeview, there is no more to pay (you may need to upgrade your aerial) and no contract. Freeview really is free-to-view.
Free to Air is MPEG-2 DVB the same thing Dish & Direct TV use.
The Recevier is hooked to old Primestar Dish mounted to a dish mover on a pole so I can get the hole sat arch. You could say its like a C-Band system but a digital DVB-band. I get satellites form 79.oW to 138.o W in the same way the C-Band system worked.
You can get all the stuff at //www.skyvision.com then click on MPEG-2 and look at receivers, dishes, dish movers and they have a list of channels that they can pick up.
Some of the channels I get for FREE are : Montana PBS , The WB east & west , FX - east & west , Fuel , OLN , RFD-TV , NBC E C M P, PAX TV E M P , Newsworld International , Outdoor Channel East & West , The Sportsman Channel , IFC , CNBC, CNBC World, and the following Fox Sports Net South, West2, Southwest, Detroit, Midwest, West, Rocky Mountain, Pittsburgh, Northwest, Northwest Alternate, and Arizona
Hi Malamute, I'm *really* interested in what you are doing.
Can you describe what hardware you have and a ballpark of how much it all cost ??
I've tried to convince my wife to get C-Band/4Dtv, but she's unwilling to go with the 'big' dish. This may do the trick.
Are you able to get all of those out-of-market affiliates they show at skyvision ?? How about wild feeds ??
Thanks !
Todd.
Thanks for the link. I'm very interested as well. Especially in HD material.
Do any of those receivers output High Definition?
Is there a guide to this stuff for dummies? I'm a super newbie here.
Thanks again,
Starving
Todd, I pick up all my stuff at ebay.com cheap! I think I spent about $300-$400 for everything. If you goto lyngsat.com and look at all the sats the local channels that are DVB I do get, wild feeds too, but you need to find out what times cause they change weekly or monthly including ABC, CBS, NBC wild HD feeds and the National PBS HDTV feed.
One set of locals I do watch are the Anchorage AK, why? because I do dogsled with my own dogs and watch the coverage of the Iditarod Dogsled Race in March.
I mounted it on the same mount as a dish/direct dish would be. The dish mover to that and the dish to the mover, you can use an 18" dish but I went bigger 20" or 24" will work fine.
The recevier I have Corship 5300 CI and outputed to my HDTV decoder then into the HDTV Sony 34" I bought. It will move the dish remotely the other three that will do it are Pansat 330A, Pansat 2300A , Pansat PVR 700HC this one cost $700.00
The only hard part was the up or down on the dish to get max signal from the sat's. If I remember right its about 31 for me in the watertown area were I call home.
One more thing these dish movers can hold and move dishes 48" wide, so they are well built and to last.
Goto ebay click on Home Electronics then Other Providers and you might pick up everything pertty cheap like me and be happy.
Malamute -
I'm still interested, but would like a better idea regarding what I need to purchase.
Looks like a receiver, dish and dish mover, right ??
How are you "passing through" the HD material ??
Thanks !
Todd, I have it set up this way.
Receiver to Dish with RG6
Receiver to Dish Mover with RG6
OTA Antenna to set top box with RG6 but ?
Receiver to set top box are mixed with a dixplexer
before ant in on set top box then STB to TV with RG6
I use the compression type F-connecters on the RG6 cable, cause they don't crush the cable.
My receiver has an output for dish mover coax cable so you will need two coax cables up to the dish and dish mover.
At skyvision you can but a satellite aming chart that is set to your local area so it very easy to follow and will get the dish pionted right and cost about $13.00 but worth IT!!!!
The Set Top Box/Decoder does fine to decode local digital and from my receiver mainly for PBS HDTV and HD Net & Movies.
Its a small start up system that most people can do, but I am looking at a Dish Network system maybe next year when their new dish and receivers come out and are on the market for awhile.
But like I said, why pay for it when you can get it for FREE:D
It sounds like I have to buy a set top box/decoder AND a receiver to watch in HD. Is that true? Which models are compatible with high definition?
Thanks in advance,
Starving
First thing is the Receiver stay with the Pansat models or Coship models, or Samsaung make some too and are realy good rec's. I use the Coship 5300CI unit. I'm passing the signal through the rec to a set top box/digital tunner/HD decoder cause my tv doesn't have it built in. I get the 1080i signal from the decoder and the rec can put out a 16:9 image.
If you want to check out spec on the rec's you can goto //www.dmsiusa.com they carry the Coship line of rec's. I did check out ebay and saw a Pansat 2300A + Dish + LNBF for $169 + S&H when this rec sells for $299 by itself at skyvision worth buying it just how I bought mine.
They also have dish movers on ebay too, you need to check it out.
I goto lyngsat.com to see what going on for Free TV and what new channels are coming on Direct TV and Diah Network too. They tell you what channels and what satellite they are on.
One thing that I did buy to help set up the dish right was from skyvision and it a satellite arch chart to your area. You can use it for a C-band system or a Ku-band/FTA system. It cost about $13.00 but worth it, it make the set up easyer.
You can set it up with out a dish mover with two speical switches and use non moving dishes to the satellites you want to get. Or you get 4 input switch and put one on the dish mover and three dishes to three different satellites. That is how much fun you can have with this system.
I will say that this past sunday I was scanning the satellites to see If I could find the wild feeds for NFL Sunday Ticket but can say anymore? You just have to get a system and find out for yourself
;)

Will that work with the system you are describing?
Thanks for the help.

What I use is the Samsung SIR-T165 Digital Terrestrial Receiver.
The one that you have linked is for Direct TV, not the same thing but it can decode OTS DTV signals which may work? Because I don't have Direct/Dish Net, they cost way to much and can't afford them.
You can try it, but the way I have it, its works fine for me.
PS I did fined the WWE pay per veiw for last night WIDE OPEN:D some very good matches.
NFL in the regular season is almost all sent via fiber from the stadiums. The few exceptions being the playoffs and any HD productions. Vyvx still can't transmit HD on their fiber yet.
The NFL ticket games should all be scrambled. Once in a great while in the analog days, a game would open up because an affiliate's decoder would go down and the network would turn it in the clear.
The preseason is a free for all because of the temporary ad-hoc networks that buy up the rights. Scrambling these would be too difficult to coordinate between all the stations of different affiliations in different markets.
I know some people that typically uplink the WWE events. I'll ask them if it was a mistake that the event wasn't encrypted.
good luck with the hobby, malamute.

Malamute,
Thank you for the info. On your Samsung, how do you have the signal from the satellite receiver coming to it? Through the antenna in coax input? You trick the Samsung into thinking your satellite feed is an OTA signal?
Sorry for so many questions. I'm totally unfamiliar with this stuff. I don't want to buy the wrong equipment.
Thanks for all of your help. It sounds like a fun hobby with some nice perks every once in a while.

uplinkguy: the rule of thumb is they should be encrypted, but I do pick up stuff that is not encrypted. Also if they forgot to turn on the encryptor unit then its fair game. I will say that it is hit and miss when it comes to picking up the signal but that is why my little black book of tips, tricks and clues I found from web sites.

Asking some many questions NOT a problem, the more I can help I'll try to answer them the best I can. So I hope this list will help you out.
I do get the sat tv guide called Orbit, you can find it on the shelf at a store I goto is Greenfield News & Hobby at 68th and Layton and it will be on the end cap by the tabloyds and in the back of it they do list some on the wild feeds. Its for C-Band/Dish Network satellite tv for the month by month and some other good info in it.
Let me know when you get it up and what you find?
Malamute
sorry, the way I typed the sat list in didn't come out as I planned. But you can see all the channels and what satellites that there on.
Wow, thanks Malamute.
The list is awesome.
I'm a news junkie and wild feed wannabe. Those out-of-market locals really interest me. I'm getting close to pulling the trigger.
Is your LNB strictly Ku band or a hybrid C/Ku ??
How tough was the first alignment ?
Have you done business with MPEG2FTA (http://www.mpeg2fta.com) ??
Thanks much.
Todd,
My LNBF is only for Ku Band.
For set up I used from skyvision.com was the SITE COORDINATES FOR YOUR SPECIFIC LOCATION #02-6500003 $12.95 plus $2 for S&H and they can fax it to you if you want, I did.
Sorry I've never found or heard of the web site you listed, but will check it out.. I got all my stuff off ebay.com
I know that the recievers (MPEG2) will not decode the DC2 signal
Hi again ...
Would you mind taking a look at this (http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/United-States.shtml) site ??
Are those all of the channels you can receive, or just the pink or green ??
Also, check out RoxSat (http://roxsat.biz/default.php?cPath=20_5) ... this is their systems page.
Todd,
I goto lyngsat.com all the time, if you looked at the free TV section you need to know which satellite's are in our area.
When you goto lyngsat, on the main page on the left side you will see is Frequencies and under that is Asia, Europe, Atlantic, America, click on America and if will bring a list of sat's up starting with EchoStar 3 61.5 W to EchoStar 5 at 157.0W and all the satellites in between we get. To see what on each sat click on the name and it will bring up the transp. with C-Band , Ku-Band , Ka-Band .
If you goto the Packages you will see all the satellites with Digital Programing on it, if you have direct or dish you can click on their name and see what channels are on which transponders.
The color code (the blue colors) dark are the newist lighter are older one's.
That web site is very nice and their price's are pertty cheap!!!!
All the model's are the best ones out there, like I said mine is a Coship 5300CI and I like it. Buy what you like the most, but they don't come with the dish mover unit, you can get one from some place.
Now you see why I have this system, is fun to explore cause you never know what you'll find!!!!
Malamute
Hi Malamute I too am new to the HD seen. I am also very interested in what you are doing with the ku-band FTA receivers. What puzzles me and the question I have is the connection between the FTA receiver and your STB HD decoder tuner box. Are you outputting the signal from the loop through connector on the FTA receiver to the STB or are you using the RF channel 3 /4 of the FTA and outputting that to the STB? Also how is a ATSC STB able to decode DVB broadcasts from the FTA receiver? I thought they were apples and oranges. If you could help me on this I want to go with this type of setup also. I am currently running a 2.66 ghz P4 PC as a home ET PC with a Haupauge WINTV-HD card connected to my Sony KF60XBR800 LCD rear projection set.
Thanks
Tazman, I use the RF out not the loop out on the sat receiver. The connection to the STB is with a Dixplexer one from the sat and one from the antenna to the antenna input on the SIR T165 unit. I've set the T165 to output a native signal so what it brings in anolog or digital signal it will output the right way. Some freinds on mine have Direct TV HD and I did compare them (the Signal and Picture look for HD Net) and they look the same to me.
How to hook up to a computer? That I can't answer, sorry. You may want to try the way I have mine setuped. I wish I could help you on that but can't.
But that's why this FTA system is so much fun to play with and what you can find up-there!
