Not sure how tech savy you guys are but... how about a script that parses the first post of threads in the news forum and puts it on an RSS feed? Or perhaps it would be easier to dump the contents of the pop-up window from the main page into an RSS feed...
This forum already has an RSS feed - try this:

It shows the original posts, but not followups.
