Title: 1080p my spin
Post by: Gregg Lengling on Monday Oct 03, 2005, 01:37:42 PM
Well the first 1080p set I saw was last year.  It was the 45" Sharp Aquos flat panel.  The picture was nice, but I felt it was very soft, especially viewing it next to a 42" Panasonic Plasma and a 50" Hitachi Plasma.

Well now the first 1080p DLP's are out on the floors and I must say I'm a little more impressed (so much so, I might have to buy one).

Looking at the Toshiba 56HM185 (1080p) next to a 62HM95 (720p), the new light engine is brighter and the detail is sharper.  The depth of colors and blacks is even better than any other DLP I've seen, and is getting very very close to that of a CRT based set.  Both of the sets I viewed were fed by TWC cable using 1080i out of the 8300 DVR box (same box feeding line amps, so the signals were identical).  In addition to these 2 sets, in the array was a 61" and 70" current model JVC-DILA and 50,60 and 70" Hitachi LCD sets.  Please note that all of these sets are MicroDisplay Light Engine Rear Projection.

In addition on the floor I got to play with a Toshiba 72HM185 which is a huge 1080p set with a diag. measurement of 72 inches.   This light engine was also phenomenal and in addition to the cable feed there was a Toshiba UpConvert DVD player hooked up with HDMI.  I tried this in all 4 modes, 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i from the DVD viewing 2 different DVD's.  1 was animation, "A Bugs Life" which was blowing people away, until I put in the SuperBit version of "The Fifth Element".

Anyhow I was greatly wowed and just may have to replace my 65" Hitachi RPTV this month with the new 72" Toshiba.

FYI,  the street price of this baby is only $4999.99, which is suprising as the 70" Hitachi and JVC's are at $5999.00 and those are only 720p.

Cheers and wish me well in my divorce once I bring this puppy home.

The store is (probably) Colder's in Grafton where they sell the a good line of HDTV products.

Lining them up like that for comparison, particularily like Gregg saw, is great. :D

As for the "divorce"scenario, tell the spouse that the 70" Qualia from Sony with its 1080p display lists at $13,000 and the the other sets are going for a thousand more like the JVC (before a possible employee discount).

As long as no one in your family sees any "rainbow effect", that price for the 72" Toshiba, almost a "steal" of a deal! ;)

That is a good point.  Do the new DLPs still have rainbows, or has that problem been solved?

Thanks for sharing your experiences Gregg.  I was hoping someone would give the green light on the big 1080p DLPs.  I want the same one you want......

I never noticed any rainbow effect on any of the current generation DLP's.  That seemed to occur only on the early models using a 5 or less segment color wheel.  Most use a 7 or greater segment wheel or use 3 DLP chips and a beam splitter (much like LCD technology).

Gregg, good luck on your 72" Toshiba set purchase and I hope the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor) is high for you! :)

The Mits 62" sets I saw in Tampa awhile ago (previous posts) had great PQ.

I can only imagine another 10" in diagonal size for the Toshiba.
Will you be getting the stand for it , too (and the extended warranty)?

Quotethe new 72" Toshiba.

What's the depth on that monster? I don't think I'll be buying anything other than another projector in the future. Lots of size and little space. Easier to resell too. As much as I like the idea of a 100" Plasma in the future, the fear of damaging it by freak accident would scare me away.

A lucky few will never noticed them. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them.  :(

It's like finding a dead pixel on your LCD monitor. Once you know where/how to look for it, you'll always notice it.

I'm waiting for them to implement the Archimedes color wheel to see it will actually eliminate the rainbow effect.

I'll go into a store and see if I notice any rainbows in the new 1080p DLPs.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping they are rainbow free for me.

Per the Vann's site for the 72HM195 set the dimensions are:

 65.75" W x 44.19" H x 20.88" D without stand, of course. :D

My 70" Hitachi is 73" (speaker wings) wide and 23 inches deep, so I would guess the Toshiba at 72" will fit more living, family or home theater rooms...nice set.

Sorry for the stupid question but is anyone planning on broadcasting 1080p yet?

If not, a 1080p set will still look better with an internal line doubler upconverting 1080i, but get the full benefit and make these sets look their best it would be nice if some channels do broadcast at 1080p.

They can't even input a 1080p signal, so even if BD or HD-DVD players will output 1080p it will be downcoverted to 1080i sent to the tv and upconverted. Hopefully the next generation will be able to take it, will probably come with add cost though.

This is why I would never buy a current generation 1080p set.  I see no real benefit in the added cost.

I have seen a Mitsubishi 1080p DLP and I am far from impressed.

And you won't see anyone broadcasting in 1080p, there is no ATSC standard for it and there isn't even the bandwidth (even if they switched to MPEG4 encoding)  it would require a 6 to 8 MHz wide channel which is not available.  The only 1080p source I've found listed anywhere is Sony's new game box that is coming out.
