No luck getting a new box...

My 8300HD is empty, and I figured it would be a good time to get a newer HDDVR with more space.

No such luck.  TWC is apparently really pushing the "Whole House DVR" and won't let you get a Cisco or Samsung box unless you sign up for WHDVR.

I tried both the Cedarburg office as well as calling.  The answer was a firm "No" all around.

Guess I am stuck with the 8300HD...or will jump ship to U-verse.  Anyone here have similar experiences?

Sucks,

I assume you mean the SA-8300HDC?  The non-C, SA-8300HD is being phased out.

That doesn't make any sense because they have Cisco/Samsung boxes with double the space but are not for whole house. The whole house boxes have even bigger 500GB drives.

I'd just exchange your 8300 as "broken". They have to give you something to replace it.

Wow, that would really tick me off .. I've been thinking of swapping too .. I'd be curious to see what you'd get if you said your box was "broken" ..

I believe I have the non-C 8300HD.  It works great, apart from having a relatively small DVR capacity.

The staff at the Cedarburg office said they could exchange for another SA.

The phone line people were hell bent on upselling me to Whole House.

If you have the SA-8000 or SA-8300 (no C) and need more recording space, you can get a Western Digital Drive Expander.  Heard they work great with these model boxes.  They are hit and miss (mostly miss) with the newer boxes.  (C-Models and Samsungs)  But with the exception of the SA-8300 HDC, which has the same 160GB storage as the SA-8300HD and SA-8300 and below, the newer boxes, like the Cisco (Cisco bought SA) 8640 and Samsung 3090 and 3270 have 320GB of storage.

Whole House DVR's are the Cisco 8642 and the Samsung 3272 and come with 500GB's of storage.

But in all cases, every box still has the often slow and crappy Navigator guide software.  That's the one nice thing about the non-C SA-8300 DVR.  Although it is older, it runs a version of the software called MDN, which is faster than the newer, and more updated C-boxes and Samsungs, which run ODN.

My Samsung 3270 box ran as well as my 8300HD except it had 2x the space.

The 8300HDC I got to replace a dead 8300HD was always slow & terrible.

Responding to the post saying the people were hell bent on getting whole house, did you by chance call 800-627-2288?  If you ever have to call TWC, call 866-892-0019, and I keep repeating this, but they are account specialist/customer retentions.  I remember calling the 627-2288 and the guy was just adamant that I could not have a cable card and TA, but I must get the box.  And then the idiot was going to make me prepay and then "realized" I already was a customer and still screwed up my order.

Also, I tried this once, email Jack Herbert, on the TWC's VPs, jack.herbert@twcable.com

These posts struck a nerve, I cannot stand high pressure sales "oh you can only get this if you get the whole package" bla bla bla, in this economy I'd want to make things as easy for customers as possible.
