Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / How good is a $100 LCD TV??
Sunday May 21, 2006, 05:48:02 PM
I was looking through American's flyer this morning and saw a 26" Olevia LCD HD ready TV "free" ($100 mail-in rebate) after buying $2000-$2999 worth of furniture.  The wife and I are looking to buy just over $2100 in furniture so I wonder how good this TV actually is.  I know almost nothing about LCD's but from the information I could pull up it looks ok.  Here are some of the specifics: http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/olevia-lcd-tv/olevia-lt26hvx.html

Olevia LCD Display Technology

Syntax iDEA Video Processing
Syntax's iDEA Technology (Innovative Digitally Enhanced Architecture) delivers an exceptional solution to digital display complexities commonly associated with color, contrast, sharpness, motion, noise and audio lip-sync. iDEA's suite of built-in and user-selectable video features delivers precise colors and sharp resolutions for the best possible picture quality.

Super-IPS LCD TV Panel Structure
Super-IPS (super in-plane switching) technology is a collaborative technology between LG. Philips LCD, Philips Consumer Electronics, Hitachi and Zenith. Super-IPS (Super In-Plane Switching) solves the viewing angle problems common to LCD TVs, ensuring a bright, sharp picture with high contrast from nay viewing angle. As a result, brightness, contrast and color rendition are much more constant regardless of viewing location.

Dynamic Brightness and Contrast Controls
Maintains overall picture quality by providing consistent, balanced color levels to control shades of gradation in dark or bright image scenes.

Pure Edge Enhancement
Virtually eliminates jagged edges from traditional interlaced video formats by creating refined edges around the objects on the screen.

Advanced Sharpness Control
Advanced CTI / LTI algorithm improves color shifts and minimizes any type of shadowing or ghosting effects and increases sharpness and detail of pictures.

Dynamic Noise Reduction
Reduces motion pattern noises without blurring an image especially when watching regular OTA (Over The Air) television broadcasts and low S/N ratio video signal.

Black Level Extender
Extends certain "gray levels" to black within a picture to define details lost.

White Peak Limiter
Analyzes and limits the amplitude of white frequencies, that can distort images resulting in a faded or washed-out appearance during bright scenes.

Flesh Tone Control
Analyzes color frequencies and controls intensity of colors to give a more natural appearance.

Adaptive Luma Control
Takes whole picture and analyzes the intensity of primary and secondary colors to match that of brightness and contrast. The result is a balanced image of colors.
Audio System Features

Syntax iDIVA Audio System
iDIVA (iDEA Digital Interactive Virtual Audio), a key component of Syntax's iDEA (Innovative Digitally Enhanced Architecture) technology, provides users with several easily adjustable settings that enable them to simulate an array of audio environments for providing an enhanced realistic listening experience. Using Olevia's on-screen display menu, users can select preset audio equalizer categories to best match the audio with the video content they are watching.

iDIVA technology bridges the gap between the high quality video images displayed on Olevia LCD TVs and the reality of their unique audio environment. Syntax is creating a truly life-like experience for Olevia users regardless of whether they are watching regular TV, a DVD movie or any Hi-Def content. In addition, through iDIVA's digital sound processor circuitry, the audio-to-video phases are analyzed and matched to prevent "lip-sync" inconsistency.

So any thoughts on this model?  I was going to wait a week for a Memorial Day sale, but if this LCD is worth it, I may get everything this week instead.

Thanks,
Jason

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / Why does a Mac monitor have...
Wednesday Mar 01, 2006, 05:27:00 PM
...better resolution than my HDTV?  I was in the mac store today and saw the new 30" Cinema HD display, with a native resolution of 2560x1600.  Granted this monitor costs $2500, but that's almost half of what I paid for my 46" 720p monitor over 2 years ago.  If you havn't had a chance to view this monitor, I would recommend you do so.  There are quite a few displays setup in the Mac store in Mayfair mall.  More info here

Milwaukee HDTV Equipment / Capture card with digital inputs?
Monday Feb 06, 2006, 07:17:45 PM
I'd like to get a video capture card that has either a component or DVI/HDMI and digital coax inputs.  My plan is to record on my HD-TIVO, move the box to the computer, and begin archiving.  The reason for doing this is to backup OTA and D* programs (ie Mythbusters, or programs on HDNET or whatnot).  I realize that I can use the "save to VCR" option if the TIVO is connected to a DVD burner, but I think this is too time-consuming, I cannot edit out commercials, and I would like the ability to backup in HD if possible.  I'm running Windows MCE on my PC.  I checked newegg and all I could find were regular OTA tuner cards.  Any thoughts?

Just got my D* bill in the mail and looked at the enclosed flyer.  Starting Jan. 21 they will be launching the CD USA network cdusa.tv .  It looks like a TRL type channel, but the website did say it will have more than just mainstream type music.  The flyer says it will appear on SD channel 101 and HD channel 401.  Last I checked anything from 400-499 was either the Spanich or Asian package.  I guess we will have to wait to see.

Monday Jan 16, 2006, 08:17:58 PM
My wife and I are looking at building a new home.  Anyone want to recommend a financial institution that can make this happen.  I would like to do a construction-to-permenant type loan if possible.  How are the interest rates looking?  Thanks, Jason

Yard Sale / RCA RCU900 Learning remote w/ touch screen $50
Friday Sep 16, 2005, 04:38:42 PM
I just upgraded to a Harmony 880, so I have no need for this remote any longer.  It is in good conditon and the screen is in flawless condition.  I bought this remote for $90 just a few months ago.  I hope to get $50 for it, but will take any serious offers.  I would sooner sell here than on eBay.  PM me if you have any questions.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / E* HD pricing
Monday Apr 11, 2005, 03:59:09 PM
I have D* and my friend has E*.  He would like to upgrade his E* to HD.  I told him that to do so, he would need a new reciever (I believe he has a DVR 522), and an OTA antenna.  I believe he also has the Top 120 package.  Has anyone here upgraded to HD on E*.  I would like to figure out how much this upgrade will cost for him.  Is there a charge for the reciever?  Will E* install and provide an OTA antenna for free?  Does he need to upgrade to a higher teir package with a new receiver?  I see that E* has an HD package similar to D* for $9.99/month.  Would it possibly just be cheaper to get an OTA STB and an antenna?  He lives about 3 miles west of me so I recommended my Channel Master 8-bowtie antenna on a mast.  I am able to recieve all the Milwaukee channels including 6-1 and 58-1 crystal clear with my setup.  As always, any information is apprecieated.

Thanks,
Jason

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / any news on ESPN2-HD?
Monday Jan 17, 2005, 04:23:34 PM
Has anyone got an update of when we can expect ESPN2-HD on D*?

I know this dosn't fall under HDTV perse, but my Samsung DVD player has a DVI output, and I have it connected to my Samsung TV via DVI.  I've got a few older DVD's that are in fullscreen (4x3) format and they are stretched to fill the entire TV screen.  Any ideas about how I can fix this/change this?

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / NFL Game of the Week HD?

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / New channels on D*?
Friday Oct 15, 2004, 07:03:17 PM
D* is moving the PPV channels in the 100's.  The "mailbox" on my receiver said that the channels were moving further into the 100's.  I wonder if D* is doing this to free up some space for more HDTV channels?  Any thoughts?

Recording / HD DVR's?
Monday Oct 11, 2004, 05:57:32 PM
Looking for a standalone HD DVR.  I do have a D* HD box and would like to record in HD as well but not with the $1200 box.  I saw a Pioneer DVD recorder with a built in hard drive at Best Buy.  Does anyone know if this can record in HD?  The teen in the department didn't have any idea.  I like the idea of being able to record in HD and then burn them to DVD disks.  Thanks in advance for the input.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Advanced picture controls
Thursday Sep 23, 2004, 07:00:43 PM
I've heard a few people on this board talk about adjusting overscan, and more advanced things beyond brightness, color, and contrast.  My question is how do you adjust these things on your tv?  I have a 46" Samsung DLP widescreen HDTV.  The model number is listed below.  Also how do you know what a good setting is while adjusting.  I thought the TV looked really good right out of the box.  I did do a THX calibration that was on the Finding Nemo DVD.  Thanks in advance.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Why no 58-1?
Thursday Sep 09, 2004, 10:24:05 PM
How come I can get all the channels including FOX 6 here, except for 58-1?  I've got  an 8 bowtie ChannelMaster atop a 10 foot mast on my single story home.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / More HD on Directv?
Sunday Aug 29, 2004, 04:40:20 PM
Besides the HD package and NFL Sunday Ticket, does D* broadcast anything in HD?  I've heard talks of USA, TNT, SCI-FI and a few other stations in HD, but it looks like D* isn't supporting it.  Any TWC or VOOM customers getting these stations in HD?

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Need opinions
Friday Aug 06, 2004, 01:16:12 PM
I just bought my Samsung HDTV tuner and hooked up my new Radioshack antenna.  I am currently recieveing channels 4-1@45%
10-1@45%
10-2@45%
10-3@45%
10-4@45%
10-5@45%
10-6@45%
12-1@45%
18-1@45%
24-1@45%
36-1@54%
55-1@54%
Today is Friday August, 6.  The weather is currently Partly cloudy, 72 degrees, wind SE@8MPH.

Now my questions concern boosting the reception on these channels.  The tech at Radioshack said that I could hook up a $30 signal amp to my system and that this should help.  How much difference should I notice with this?  Should I maybe step up to a larger antenna?  I bought the second largest antenna that they carry.  It is currently installed in my attic aimed at 155 degrees.  I live in West Bend just north of HWY 33 on Creek Dr.

What about channels 6-1 and 58-1?  I don't seem to be getting any signal for these stations and the tuner did not find them when I scanned for stations.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / OTA in West Bend
Wednesday Jul 28, 2004, 09:29:40 PM
Do I need line-of-site to recieve HD OTA broadcasts?  I want to put an antenna in my attic because my homeowner's association will not allow an antenna in the back yard or on the roof.  Will this still pick up OTA HD channels?  I do not have any tall buildings or trees as far as I can tell in the direction that I need to point the antenna.  I do have the West Bend airport in the way though.  Please let me know what I should do for this.  I need to have HD in time for Packer's season.

Milwaukee HDTV Technical Issues / Antenna suggestions
Monday Apr 05, 2004, 04:02:34 PM
I checked on antennaweb and they recommend a medium directional w/ preamp.  I'm on the east side of West Bend, and the farthest station I want is FOX 6 at 27.2 miles at 154/155 degrees.  I live in a condo so I cannot install a rooftop antenna.  I do have a full attic that I can mount an antenna in.  I'm looking to get the OTA DTV channels from Milwaukee.

I talked to a guy at Radio Shack and he recommended a few antennas.  The cat #'s are 15-2190, 15-2185, 15-2154.  I do have Direct TV, so I think thats why he recommended the second antenna.  What are your thoughts on these antennas.  If not any of these which would you suggest, and where can I buy them?

Also I saw an antenna from Direct TV that looks like it mounts like a dish, but looks more like an antenna.  I don't know if I could install this antenna though (because of it being a condo).

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions you can provide.
