Title: New TWC HD Channels in Test Mode!!!
Post by: Jack 1000 on Wednesday Nov 04, 2009, 04:39:00 PM
Hey All,

TWC Digital Subs, note that there are new HD channels in Test Mode!

1905 is TCM-HD (Turner Classic Movies-HD)

1906 is Headline News-HD

Remember that this often means that they are generally about a week away from launch in the guide.  The launch is not official until that time.  You MIGHT be able to record those channels if you find them by doing Category Searches in the guide and see the 1900 numbers.  But remember that they are still in test mode, so nothing is for sure.

There are about 10 new HD stations coming and past history indicates that once they show up in the 1900's test range there is a 99% chance that we are getting them soon!  Enjoy!

It might be a good idea to keep posting in this thread as new channels come out!  There are like 10 coming between now and the end of the year so keep watching!!!

Thank you TWC for adding these channels!  Looking forward to the new ones soon!!!  Still really waiting for Spike TV HD and Comedy Central in HD! (Not on the the 10 channel list, but those are the big two that seem to get requested most often for carriers that don't have  them!)

I am not near the TV so won't be able to check this out.  Is 1110 right for TCM? The new Theme line-up says that you just add a "1" for the HD equivalent of any SD channel.  In Metro Milwaukee, yes Headline News in HD is channel 1351 (SD channel 351)  but TCM in SD is 276 so check and see if 1276 is also TCM-HD.

I ask this because if TCM HD is on 1110 removing the first one from that channel makes it 110, which is Nick 2, and Nick 2 is only in SD and only offered on the new Digital Choice Package.

Now, they could still sort of be testing TCM-HD.  But that is great news that they are working on adding the new HD stations!

TWC "logic" doesn't always follow a straight line, Jack 1000, they organized their line up under themes, even within the 1000's for HD channels, so don't be surprised if the channels are a bit off sometimes, at least there are more now and more coming still (thank you TWC).:D

TCM-HD is part of the Kids and Family HD theme, so it considered a good fit, 1176 may have been better, but it's fine.

FSN-WI HD says fulltime HD coming soon on the guide but it has been up and running for several days now.

Agree about TWC's "Logic!" LOL!  BTW TCM-HD now matches its counterpart.  It is on 1276.

I stopped trying to figure out their logic long ago.

Placeholders for Disney XD HD (1901) and Cartoon Network HD (1902), but neither channel active as of yet.

Last night, after 10PM, I checked for those channels and did not find them.
Did they go active today and if so, what TWC-numbered channels are these on?:huh?:

I think Jack meant that they are active on the test channels that he indicated, not that they entered production on the "real" channel numbers.

Of course, if they aren't on the test channels either, then I have no idea. :)

Right,

It's just on those 1900 series test channels.  The channels are not in the guide yet. (As in being in the time grid.  That was as of this morning.)

Yes, test channels are no longer there (again), so what is the hang up now?
We were supposed to get the two test ones mentioned before, along with the 8 others they advertised...what's the deal, TWC?

My neighbours gave up on the slow roll out and the new pricing for December and went to Directv for HD service.:D

Disney XD-HD is now on 1102

Cartoon Network-HD is now on 1106.

They officially launched on Tuesday.

When they become official in the Time Grid, they are removed from the 1900's test channel range.  Channels in this range generally launch on the Time Grid within 3-7 days. (The average seems to be about 5 days.)

Here is the list of channels we are SUPPOSED to have by the end of the year:

TCM-HD-Added
Headline News-HD-Added
Cartoon Network-HD-Added
Disney XD-HD-Added
ESPN U-HD
BBC America-HD
E!-HD
AMC-HD
Outdoor Channel-HD
Fox Business-HD

In addition:

Style-HD
Game TV-HD
Team-HD

are talked about on the website, but I think we will see the channels above first.

Hope your neighbors have better luck with Direct TV!

I watch a good amount of BBCA, so I have been trying to be patient with BBCA-HD coming as Directv does not offer it yet...last night these weren't "on" in my grid, these are now...nice.
The rest of them, I don't care about, unless The Weather Channel HD and BIO HD are added, too...and these aren't on TWC-Wisconsin's "list".:(

Does anyone know what these channels will be?  I can't find anything on-line for these.

It's nice to see them adding channels, but it would be better if they brought us channels that people want... NFL would be nice.

I do miss not having HDnet as well.  Spike TV and Comedy Central would be nice too.

Yeah, the fact that they dropped the HDNets because "being HD isn't enough" is a flippin joke when MAVtv is on there.

AND charging $5.00 more by putting it in a package who's only redeeming value for those that had it WAS HDNET Movies.  Now that channel is gone, replaced with MAV TV?  WTF?!!!

Just curious, considering how many HD channels TWC has added in the past year, has anyone noticed a degradation in picture quality?  Did TWC increase their bandwith to support all of these additions?

The reason I ask is because I left TWC for D* 2 years ago due to the quantity of HD channels and the customer service.  It seems now that TWC has really kicked things into gear from an HD standpoint and has more of what I want compared to D*.  On the flipside, D*'s customer service is still light years ahead of TWC.

Nothing I am sure,

I think the remaining channels will be available in December which would be ESPNU HD, and E HD.  I think I saw Style HD listed on the website too along with Game HD and Team HD. (What are Game HD and Team HD anyway?)  There might be others coming too!

TWC divisions are FINALLY starting to streamline new HD channel additions, (provided that bandwidth is available.) with more uniformity and consistency.

My parents have TWC... I haven't noticed any degradation in quality when I'm at their house, though they only have the box on their 30" HDTV.  TWC uses switched digital video, which basically means that a channel only gets sent through the pipes when you or someone in your neighborhood is watching it.  That's how they "save" bandwidth for more HD channels.

You might want to wait a little while if you want to switch.  D* is launching a new satellite, if on schedule, by the end of the year or first part of January.  Their commercials are saying they will have the capacity for 200 HD national channels.  If the launch is successful and they have agreements with the channels to carry them, we'll probably see new HD channels around March.

I really don't have a lot of desire to switch back to TWC and am aware that Directv is launching their new satellite.  Hopefully, it goes up without any problems.  There's really only two HD channels that I want that D* doesn't carry in MKE and those would be PBS and Travel HD.  Luckily, they do have TWC beat on the NFL Network.

But, if anything happens with Directv 12 my hand may be forced to make the switch back.

Remember that the 1900's range is only a test mode for new channels.  You can only find them through searching in the listings,  test channels do not show up in the grid.  You SHOULD be able to record them by finding the channels in searches, provided you subscribe to the SD version of that channel.

However, those channel numbers will change when testing is done and become official in the grid.  This is when they really count as "additions."  Based on the SD placement of those stations these will eventually be the new locations of the channels.

Expect the change below sometime within 3-5 days of this writing.  The future guide placement for these channels coming soon should be:

1140 Bio-HD
1225-BBC America-HD
1277-AMC-HD
1330-Outdoor Channel-HD
1353-Fox Business News-HD

When the channels get added to the guide, (or when the 1900 range test channels disappear, same story) you go to the list above to see them.

As of today, the first three new HD channels are in place:

1140 Bio-HD
1225-BBC America-HD
1277-AMC-HD

I would expect Outdoor Channel-HD and Fox Business News-HD in place before Monday.

I found those test mode 1900 stations by accident before I made this thread!  Note that sometimes the test channels will begin at 1901-1905.  Other times, like in the case of the last additions they started in the 1970's.  Up-arrowing may or may not work.  If it doesn't work, you'll have to enter each test channel individually.  Watch the 1901 range and 1970's range for new stations!

They still have EPSN U-HD, E!-HD, and Style-HD to do, probably early next month.  As well as Game TV-HD and Team-HD.

Maybe mods or admins might want to pin this thread!   That way, we can easily keep track of new channels coming out! (Since the TWC site's information is so outdated.)

In fact, somewhere in the 1900's I think even starting on 1900, which now wasn't even a Diagnostic channel, they had placeholders for most if not all the remaining stations.  I can't remember what they all were, but I know I saw placeholder notices for HBO 2-HD and The Tennis Channel-HD.  So, probably in about a week those will be in test mode and the week after that moved to regular stations.

Nope, nada, nothing for several now, at least in "test mode" these were available.:bang:

-This SDV thing only works so far and then (you wish you had some other provider).

I'll wait until tomorrow night to see if TWC has its act together:confused:

Formerly added channels like HLN HD and so on are now not coming in, On-Demand channels are not working (those you pay extra for).
Rebooting the box (unplug and wait, then replug) works (most of the time), but does TWC tell subscribers this during their additions along with the hoopla of adding notices?

 No...:(

Yes, but during a recording on one HD channel, as I was watching a programme in HD that I had recorded, it locked up and I had to do another hard reboot once again, messing up the HD recording that I had in progress. :bang:

I know TWC is trying to add more HD channels, that is appreciated, but when they messup accessing the existing already-added HD channels, including the On-Demand channels (in SD and HD) to add more, it is very frustrating.

I'm thinking TWC could make some money off an extension cord with a switch on it like I am getting (or some other configuration)  so I don't have to dig around the back of my HT setup to hard boot it everytime they update the boxes or programming to make the boxes work once again.;)

That sucks!  I know they had some signal problems because of the weather and they are working on the last of the HD Channel acquisitions for the year.  (Still placeholders at last night's check on the 1900 test mode stations.)  How does it look today for you?  I am not near my TV at the moment.

It will still do this, but you have to be on a newly-added HD channel, like the Weather Channel HD
Often I will be watching it and when just one HD show is starting to record, the newer HD channel gets kicked off, leaving the power-on channel or some other channel, if changed since that time, to be the alternate HD channel, but not the newly-added HD channel ones.:(

The placeholders are just that...placeholders...for now.:D

Jeff,

Are they all coming in?  Because for the last couple days the only ones that had video were Fuse and QVC.  However, the placeholders are in effect for all those channels.  Expect them to move to their regular positions, (found by adding a "1" to their Standard Definition equivalent station, ) about one week (or less) from the time that video is available on all of them.

I am excited about the current set of channels in testing.  I've waited for multiple HBO for a long time.  The second set is optimistic as well.  The only other channel I would like to see is NFL network, but then may never happen.

I do miss HDNet as well for movies and hockey games.

Same here, but when the placeholders started offering what I thought was real programming tonight, there were different HD channels in their place (outside of FUSE HD and QVCHD) with the placeholder channel title intact, just not there (yet) for a few of them, particularily, the HD movie channels, very odd.
Additionally, I tried recording a movie on StarzHD and all it recorded was that "Channel not available, press A", etc. crap, so I missed out on my recording.
I guess is that you have to be on that station at the time of recording so close to the placeholder channel numbers, or suffer the fate of SDV messing with you.:bang:

FUSE HD-Fine
QVCHD-Fine
ENCORE HD- (Don't get Encore)
HBO 2 HD- Is incorrectly showing Style HD
HBO FAMILY HD-Is incorrectly showing Weather Channel HD
MOREMAX HD-(Don't get Cinemax)

TENNIS HD-Is definitely NOT showing Tennis Channel.  Not sure what it is, might be one of the HBO stations, but it is in HD.

The good news:
All test channels are in the standard HD locations, no more placeholders for the HD channels we have had for the past week or so as test channels.
The bad news:.
Be careful of the 1500 series HDMOD channels, these are PPVHD channels mixed in of individual movies.
-An unsuspecting family member could select these as a standard "view" and rack up your cable bill...

Post by: gparris on Wednesday Jan 06, 2010, 07:45:34 AM
After several new HD channel additions, TWC had cleaned up its test area until last night. Now placeholders of existing channels have once again been added.

This means that if TWC follows its usual practice, it later adds the new channel additions into the channel placeholders, tests these out and in about a week or so later, the new channel additions fill in their regular, assigned slots.

There are new HD channels coming per the programming notices section on their site, adding MTV HD, Comedy Central HD, Spike HD, BET HD, Nickelodeon HD, VH1 HD, CMT HD...so it is just a matter of time.;)

Comedy Central-HD-1961 (Labeled as Comedy Central HD On Demand?)
Spike-HD 1962

Nick-HD 1964
VH1-HD 1965

Game2-HD-1967

In checking with other divisions, the roll-out for these channels is anywhere from January 18th to January 31.  Video will probably be on those channels by next Monday, with the channels in regular slots, (adding a 1 to the SD station) before the end of the month.

So with these additions, where is TWC-Milwaukee for HD channels, like 90 stations?  We are getting closer to the Satellite and U-Verse guys for HD, finally!

I hate to say this too loudly, since in general more HD is better, but I'm actually satisfied with the quantity and selection of HD that we have now. I don't think that I've tuned out of the HD block at all since the last block of channels were added.

I'd be much happier if the pixelation would be worked on/eliminated, instead of additional channels being added. At this point, most of the HD channels are OK, but Syfy and BBC America stand out in my mind as being particularly bad, especially during prime-time.

Did anyone ever do a data rate check on TWC HD cable channels. I am willing to bet that they use a data rate much lower then required, for good picture quality. Like most providers,  they would sacrifice PQ for quantity, knowing most viewers don't mind semi-HD.  All MPEG-2 HD video should be at the full ATSC data-rate
of 19.2 megabits per second

All of the NEW HD stations are now showing up on my box in their TEST MODE POSITIONS indicated above.  Remember, they will not be in the guide's time grid, but you should be able to find them through Category and Keyboard Searches and DVR subs can record them this way.

Launch of them in the time grid by adding a 1 to their SD channel locations, will probably be available by early to middle of next week.  The only station not coming in is.

Time Warner submitted the new channels to Tribune Media Services, which I would assume means that they are due to be added very shortly.

(This evening, I received a PTCM, a Pre-TiVo Central Message about the new additions, which happens after Tribune adds the new channels to the lineup.)

According to the message, the new channels added are:
1103 - Nickelodeon HD
1206 - Spike HD
1207 - Comedy Central HD
1216 - BET HD
1250 - MTV HD
1252 - VH1 HD
1254 - CMT HD

For me, I get:
1103: Channel not provided by the Tuning Adapter
1206: Nothing, black screen
1207: Searching for signal on: Cable In
1216: Nothing, black screen
1250: Nothing, black screen
1252: Nothing, black screen
1254: Nothing, black screen

So, clearly, not ready for prime time yet. :p

They had them active (audio/video) in test mode about five days ago.  Than there was so much pixiation that they took them down.  (This happens most of the time when they add new channels.)  They were placeholders as recently as earlier today.  Don't know if they are back on as of this writing.

If they are not active yet, they should be in regular positions by February 1st.  (Some areas of New York got them today.)

I think they will still be on soon.  I think they might be having trouble because of the sub-channels being added.  After they get these stations in place, it may be time for an expansion of bandwidth before adding more HD.  After these stations come out, I think we will have about everything that the competition has for HD

If TWC could  get everyone to a Digital Only subscription, removing channels 2-99 and putting whatever is missing from that area on digital 100 or above, it would free up so much space!  But they might be afriad of losing Standard Service only subs if they did that.

Any approximate date from TWC on those channels for our area?  This is the first time that they had video in Test Mode and took it off again.

Nothing yet on those Viacom channels!

I did e-mail Tim Cuprisin and did not get a response.  Called TWC last night and as usuall, they did not know anything.  The CSR said to check Wisconsin VOD for when those channels come out.  I thought she was full of **** because TWC has never to my knowledge put announcements about new channels on Wisconsin On Demand!

But if you tune to TWC digital channel 411 (WOD) and go to Tim Cuprisin's "On Media" show, it looks like he is going to be providing updates about cable on WOD channel 411, so that could be what the CSR was talking about.

Some divisions got those Viacom channels on January 27th.  Some got them today, which is February 3rd, and I heard that some other divisions are set to get them on February 11th.  If you hear anything from our Milwaukee division on those channels, please post!  Thanks in advance.

I would rather have TWC be cautious than not, these will come in good once they figure out what happened before, with all the pixelation.:D

Title: What: No more HD channel additions?
Post by: gparris on Sunday Apr 18, 2010, 11:22:35 AM
What with all the new HD channels TWC locally has added, they continue to show on their site the following:
"WPXE HD, HBO Signature HD, and HBO Comedy HD will join the digital lineup."

I know ION HD is a local, that will be good, but these HBO's are adders from their own TW company - HBOHD channels have been slow in coming and there is still no HBOHD-On Demand channel, but there is a ShowtimeHD-On Demand channel, which is rather odd.

Starz! HD offers at least 5 HD channels and TWC here has only one and that maybe why it is in contract negotiations with Starz!/Encore, this again, per their site.

Point is, TWC has not added anymore HD channels like they used to do, maybe since their recent "meltdown" of (March 23rd), they are more worried about alienating current subs that way - or - these new channel additions are in just the planning stages.:huh?:

I will cut them some slack,

However, I have no explanation for why TWC-Wisconsin offers Showtime On Demand-HD but not HBO On Demand-HD, especially like GP said, HBO is an off-shoot of their own company!

There's only been about a month transition with the new HD additions.  I would expect them around the first week of May.

There are also rumors of Navigator program guide updates coming out around June into the summer, so they may not want to strain the system preparing it for that.  They just recently added WPXE-HD as a coming soon station.  I would expect that along with the new HBO HD channels at about the same time.

I am VERY PLEASED with our current HD line up on TWC.  We now have over 100 HD channels and I don't think there are too many more that I couldn't live without.  Yes, HBO On Demand-HD and WGN America-HD as well would be cool.  But I am just trying to think of what else they should carry in HD.

To increase bandwidth, if that is a problem, they SHOULD just drop channels 2-99 and put whatever is missing from the digital tier (100 and above) to the appropriate digital station categories.  We have for instance TWO TV Land Stations (61 and 114) and TV Land-HD is coming to San Diego.  If we get that, TWC-Wisconsin will have three TV Land stations with the HD channel at 1114.  We now have THREE places for CNN-Headline News, (Channel 11 on Broadcast Basic,  351 for Digital AND 1351 for HD.

That duplication causes bandwidth limitations and while some people may not like the idea of going to a digital box, this should have been done coinciding with the digital TV conversion.  Less duplication means the potential for better picture quality and signal strength.

I think TWC is just taking a little break from channel additions so as not to overload the system.  I would hope that by next month we will have the new HD stations for HBO and WPXE.

May isn't too far away, let's wait and see.

The meltdown in March we had as subscribers was just unacceptable.:bang:

I still experience pixelation on fast moving scenes on HD channels. so TWC is running bandwidth-scarce and its SDV system is not working as well as it should.:(

Hey,

Several new HD channels in test mode!  They will probably be launched later this month.  Do you know the Navigator Guide Trick?  Press Settings on the Remote.  Now scroll to Favorite Channels.  Next enter a channel like 1999.  Now scroll up, and you will see a bunch of new HD channels!  Note the following:

1.) You can only get to them by entering the channel number directly.  You must exit out of any guide screen for them to work.  Enter them individual.  I don't think you can go up or down or use Last Channel recall for test stations.

2.) They are not official yet, so are not recordable from the Time Grid.  Have not tried from the B "Find Shows" Menu.

3.) Did not get a chance to see the exact channel  numbers.  Sure someone will post.  I think they were all active, except for HBO-On Demand-HD!  Glad that is coming!  I believe the test channel ranges are 1800 to 1999.

Post what you know about this topic in this thread.

HBO-HD On Demand is on 1998 from what I can see, so that looks like there will be a good amount of HD channels TWC is ready to add, hopefully soon. :)

The analogue channels TWC eliminated more recently probably lead to to the addition of these HD channels, many of which they had kept noting in their legal notices section for very many months.

Looks like TWC, even with SDV, is bandwidth-starved, even the installer I talked to at the gas station, filling up his truck, agreed. He said the the higher speed internet TWC is promising, though not avaialable everywhere yet, is just one more thing to jam up the "pipe" along with everything else.

Time Warner really needs to just finish killing off the analog channels. They are a complete waste of time.

I agree,

If channels 2-99 were eliminated, and the required FCC mandated public access channels on that tier were moved to digital, this would help with bandwidth a great deal.  I heard TWC recently did a bandwidth update.  The pixiation problems that I had on and off on channels 1005 (CBS 58-HD) and 1012 (ABC-HD) seemed to have stopped after waiting six months for them to be fixed.

Jack, you seem to know a lot about TWC. So I am wondering if you could assist me. Is this the "pixellation" I always see people talking about with Time Warner?:
http://i.imgur.com/UZTJW.jpg

I see these video errors occur fairly often. An hour long show will usually have an average of 3 or 4 of these video frames with an error in them. They can be quite irritating, but they are rarely as bad as this picture. This is a more blatant example I've selected. I never get audio errors, video errors only.

I have been assuming this is just Time Warner Cable's MPEG2 encoders sucking because I see a lot of people complain about "pixellation." As well, my signal levels on my DVR seem to be fine:
http://i.imgur.com/8nIiK.jpg

-10 to +10 with SNR of ~37 are adequate signal levels, yes?

Yes,

Good example of pixiation.  This is usually caused by poor signal strength due to problems in the node, problems in the line, and sometimes problems in the box.  First issue would be to check the drop pole and in-line cables coming into the home to test.

I am going to ask my engineering friend who seems to know more about TWC than TWC about those signal levels.

By that you mean, a waste of bandwidth, yes.

Comcast to my immediate south, in Illinois, has limited the analogue access to a basic handful of channels, mostly local channels and that is it.
If you want more channel access, a free, easy-to-install convertor is available to you for the first 2 TVs you have, then a digital box for more of the regular "cable" channels, premiums and so forth.
This cable company didn't mess around like TWC has, so afraid to change analogue basics to digital ones requiring a box or convertor, they just "did the deed".
Now, no one I know of, since I work in Illiniois and know subs with Comcast, says they ended their cable subscriptions because of that, so I don't know what TWC's fear of losing subs is coming from. This is now a time where HD channels are numerous and CRT sets are being replaced by flat panel sets, all of which offer HD display capability and easy hookup.

TWC: Comcast did it - so can you!

Hi,

Friend said your signal levels fall within acceptable limits.  There are some new stations being added soon, which may account for the pixiation.  Hold out for maybe two weeks if you can to see if it clears up on its own.  If it does not, you might be getting some fluctuation from time to time, and I would than request that they come out to replace the line-drop.

I don't think this is a box problem.

Ponies,

What's the status of your service now?  (6:30am July, 8 2011)  Sometimes this is due to scheduled maintenance.  What were you doing as far as watching TV or DVR'ing when the outage occurred?  Is your service back?  If not, what shows up on the DVR display?

Oh yeah it's back. It was down for about an hour. Quite irritating because it caused me to miss a show I was attempting to record. No re-airs listed in the next two weeks.

I figured it would be the test channels being officially integrated, but nope, you've still got to manually punch your way to them.

I also noticed a new test channel; NASA (1978). It says to call customer care to receive it so I think it's going to be in that higher "HD Plus" tier they offer for $7 more a month. I think they're also sticking Crime & Investigation HD in it.

But since it only says "NASA" and not "NASAHD" I don't know if this is the HD version... if it's not it's going to be an utterly useless addition. If anyone has that add-on HD tier perhaps someone can confirm it's only the SD version of the channel?

NASA TV is going to be on the optional Digital Choice Pakage $4.95/mo I think.   That package is a rip-off IMO, but maybe this channel might boost subscriptions for it.  I can confirm that it will only be the SD version at this time.

Channel 1978 comes in as NASATV if you have the that package, it worked for me tonight. :D
Yes, finally, NASATV is available to TWC Wisconsin, with the last shuttle mission, but there will still be astronauts without the shuttles, NASA is also about airplanes, space sciences, astronautics and so on.
The channel is educational and the ISS will have broadcasts continuing, too, so there is still a need for NASATV.;)

It's a pointless addition when NASATV HD is available to stream for free right here. (http://www.ustream.tv/nasahdtv)

Now of course it's poor quality high definition, but it should still look marginally better than whatever SD version of the channel Time Warner adds to their cable system. They need to start carrying the HD version. NASA probably offers the channel to providers for free because it's on free-to-air satellite so I don't see what the problem is here. It would take two seconds to find some capacity on the network currently being unused to squeeze in NASA TV HD.

Many TWC locations have had NASATV for years, TWC Wisconsin is just "waking up" as it did with HD channel additions for the past year or so. :(

As far as streaming, many would prefer to access it, like any other channel or link up, from the TV remote without hooking up a computer to their TV, but your point is valid, thank you.:D
