Latest News / Charter to buy Time Warner Cable
Monday May 25, 2015, 06:46:15 PM
Com cast lost but that didn't mean the party ended. Plan B was to try to some other player buy TWC. Let's see how fast this happens. How much worse is Charter than TWC?:bang:

Sony 400-disc Blu-ray Disc Changer model number BDP-CX960 for sale. It plays Blu-ray Discs, DVDs and CDs and allows you to keep all your discs in one neat collection. Most Blu-ray Discs have a code that the changer knows and uploads the description from an outside database to enter the title and picture of the movie to the listing you can bring up to find your discs. Other titles, mostly DVDs and CDs, you can enter yourself quite easily. You will need a wired or wireless internet connection to access updates and data on the discs.
Unit is like new, comes complete with remote, manual and original box, including the extended warranty which is good through October.
The reason I am selling this is that it does not fit in our new great room entertainment cabinet. The changer measures about 17" wide x 9-1/2" high x 21" deep.
"Asking price" is $600 and these sell for than this.
For any inquires please message me.

Milwaukee HDTV Programming / New TWC HD channel changes 5/24
Friday May 20, 2011, 10:19:56 PM
Mailings have gone out to all subscribers this past week (or weeks) with a pamphlet of the channels lineups, though in my area, nothing really changed at all and the new channels in the their mailing were not even listed in the pamphlet.
The "Coming this summer-more HD channels!" showed only what their website has shown in the notices section, some new, some old:
Cooking HD, DIYHD being added and the Lifetime HD, C&I HD along with the trutvHD coming.

-Last time trutvHD was in place, if only for as short time, all the HD channels were a big mess because their system couldn't handle all the action channels with the basketball.
What will make it different this time?:huh?:

Looking closer at the handout listings for the channel lineup, I do see the former analogue channels of 71-75 and 78 and 80 available only with a digital box box or tuning adapter/cablecard...so maybe that is their solution?

Latest News / TWC may cancel CW18 carriage soon
Thursday Nov 11, 2010, 09:38:33 PM
There was a top runner overlay on the screen tonight as the family watched Vampire Diaries and Nikita on the CW18HD channel 1018, TWC.
It said that as of January 1st, 2011, TWC may cease carriage of this channel and other sources like ATT Uverse, CharterCable, Directv (carries it in HD) and antenna will be sources of receiving this channel - or something to that affect.:(
It could be their usual chain-rattling and that get tough thing all over again, but heck, its a broadcast channel and I don't want to put up an outside antenna to get OTA channels, not with me moving in 4-5 months, especially in winter.

Point is, we have had CW18 and CW18HD for some time and it is a channel my family and I watch even more than BBCAHD (last season of Smallville) and DirectvHD (does not get BBCAHD) may get my switch by then if it happens, moving or not (I want to move in spring, not winter).
There could be a mover's clause if I move and if I cannot find a signal for DirectvHD by then in the spring if I jump sooner at my place I live at currently and find a way, I will have to check it out before then.
(I assume this CW18 carriage extends to channel 24, also.)

Latest News / New HD Channels Coming to TWC Wisconsin Soon!
Sunday Sep 13, 2009, 10:12:21 PM
See:http://www.timewarnercable.com/wisconsin/learn/new_digital_lineup.html
Look at the pdf file on column 1 about the 10 or more new HD channels coming before the end of this year after you click on your subscriber area.

While it does not mention The Weather Channel HD and Planet Green HD, something the TWC site had mentioned for months (and never added), it does mention other HD channels, some I never heard of and it says that more HDs are coming, so it has got to be a great thing coming for all TWC HD subscribers!;)

Latest News / Tivo (possibly) coming to Time Warner Cable
Tuesday Jun 23, 2009, 08:38:40 PM
Who knows when and if...but here is an article...I'd be glad when my DVR doesn't freeze up when I turn it on.:(

It thought this interesting, more HD channels, but for an additional price and "Turbo HD" is not so "turbo", anymore.

Still, Dishnetwork does offer a great HD channel selection and Directv (seems to be) slower in adding more HD channels lately, but both offer a lot more than TWC! ;)

Latest News / U-Verse starting with 2 HD streams!
Thursday May 01, 2008, 06:59:55 PM
From EngadgetHD, AT&T's U-Verse is offering 2 HD streams at once, formerly 1 HD channel per household to watch at a time.

See:

http://www.uverseusers.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,2/topic,7475.60/

Now all that has to happen is for it to be available everywhere else U-Verse exists!

(and of course, be available in Kenosha County, for those fed-up TWC subs:( )

Latest News / Time Warner Cable...its own entity?
Wednesday Apr 16, 2008, 09:19:01 PM
From this source, looks like a "new" Time Warner Cable!

-But a change for more HD channels sooner for Wisconsin?

http://www.timewarnercable.com/InvestorRelations/PressReleases/TWCPressReleaseDivDetail.ashx?PRID=2193&MarketID=50

Probably not, as NYC gets up to 50 HD channels on 4/30!

http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6550913.html?desc=topstory

Take the news as if nothing will change in Wisconsin for TWC HD subs, but then again, you never really know.:D

Latest News / Sony to stop making SXRDs & 3LCD RPTVs
Wednesday Dec 19, 2007, 09:22:56 PM
From late-breaking news in engadgethd:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/12/19/sony-dumping-all-rear-projection-tvs-to-focus-on-lcds/1#c9396371

If this story in engadgethd is true, it's a sad time for those who don't have the extra cash for a HDTV set greater than 60" for a flat panel set.

Who the heck is going to shell out $33,000 for the Sony 70" LCD panel vs. what could have been the now-dumped 70XBR5, originally-retailing at $5,999?
Few, if any, unless you just won the lottery.

As for the JVC, I checked out the 70" LCoS set (HD-ILA series):
- it is harder to find and not advertised as much -  I found a couple at Tapeworks in Houston, TX
...that's it for 70" LCoS size!

Looks like the nail is in the RPTV "coffin" sooner than later, unless this is a bad joke from engadgethd or marketing ploy from Sony, which I highly doubt.

RPTVs are very cost-effective, offer very much more bang-for-the-buck as sizes go past 50":
-So what will Sony offer as the biggest size, only their 52" LCD Panel?

What else is there out there around 60 inches that is not an RPTV?

A) Panasonic offers a 58" Plasma for under $4,000 (sales at stores).
Vizio offers a 60" 720p PDP (that cnet rates in the 6's for overall performance/features vs. Panasonics's 8's)...at $2500.

B) Panasonic offers an exceptional 65" Plasma at $8,999 (less on sale) that requires mounting hardware or a $999 table stand extra.
Sharp Aquos has its "64U" series with an excellent 65" LCD panel, priced around $6,899 (prices vary) that comes with its own stand (also wall mountable), too.
These are the largest and most "affordable" panel sets out there for now.

But after 60" (outside of a Pioneer's Kuro Plasma at much higher prices):

What is there that is as reasonably-priced in what is left for RPTVs?

-Maybe the Samsung LED DLPs at 61" are the closest, but these still are no 65-70'' sizes.
There are other DLPs use the colour wheels and rainbows (for some):
-Mitsubishi's 73" size, as found at CC and BB, but I (and others) find it harder to watch as its picture is grainy and dark: cnet gives it lower marks, too.

LCoS was so promising (SXRDs) and wonderful, I don't forgive you, Sony!

Since October is over and November is already here, I did some research looking at other TWC locations.
The following HD channels can be offered from TWC as follows, based on what I have found:
1)  A&E HD
2)  MHD (MTVHD)
3)  History Channel HD
4)  Lifetime Movies HD
5)  HGTV HD
6) Food Network HD
7)  Golf/Vs. HD
8)  CNN HD
These are the so-called "Free HD Channels" since these aren't part of the HD Package or Premium Service.

Additionally, most TWC locations are adding (or already have) as HD premium channels the following:
9)   NHL HD (usually with Sports Package)
10) StarzHD
11) CinemaxHD
12)The Movie Channel HD
-Only in Hawaii (for some unexplained reason)...13) National Geo Channel HD

Note #1: From what I have researched, The Movie Channel HD is being offered/added when Cinemax HD and possibly, StarzHD has already been added to the TWC area.

Note #2: That the first 8-9 HD channels are the HD channels offered most recently into TWC areas, along with the other 2 HD premium channels (TMC and Starz), which seem to be almost automatic additions. TBSHD would have been the 10th (it was the first), as in "10+ Channels for October".
-NHL HD and CNNHD are appearing more and more with programming change notices in local launch areas of TWC.

Note #3: Channels A&EHD and MHD, along with CinemaxHD and StarzHD have been in many TWC locations for well over a year now
-but of course, not in Wisconsin TWC.

The point being made here is, if you want to "vision" what a good TWC location can offer (if it wants to), these are the current "crop" of HD channels that are being offered by TWC when the location(s) decides to add them.
October's telemarketer call about "10+ HD channels in October" was wrong, at least for TWC Wisconsin, but that did not mean that other TWC areas didn't get it.:)

While these HD channel additions from TWC are in no way close to what even what Comcast (or other cablecos)
offer now or are are planned (advertised to subs as "coming soon"),
- it is a better start than what TWC here in Wisconsin subs are getting for similar pricing.

While this is a cable-only comparison, the HD channel total is still way down from what either satellite company is offering.:(

Again, it's a start.:D

Latest News / More Directv HD channel additions today
Monday Oct 15, 2007, 09:50:56 AM
According to EngadgetHD (see link on this forum's main page), more Directv HD channels were added:
Fox Business Network (359)
HGTV HD (229-1)
FX HD (248)
Speed Network HD (607)
Fuel HD (612)
The Cartoon Network (296)

For those with this service, check to make sure your DirectvHD boxes are delivering these.
Some of my family and friends had to do some work to get their 5LNB dishes aligned, boxes set and BBC's situated;
While others "in the loop" got more reason to celebrate having DirectvHD in their homes than ever today...enjoy!

Latest News / Somewhere In TWC-land: More HD channels!
Friday Sep 28, 2007, 12:59:47 PM
Looks like, if your local TWC management wants to give its HD subscribers more HD channels, they get them:
HGTVHD, FoodHD, LifetimeMoviesHD, HistoryChannelHD, MTVHD, A&EHD, Golf/VersusHD, CNNHD and TBSHD.
Note the additions - I count 10-11 new HD channels, including The Movie Channel HD and CinemaxHD.
http://www.timewarnercable.com/SouthCarolina/products/HDTVAvailableChannels.html

Does TWC Milwaukee care?

Obviously, not.:bang:

Sony has a new Blu-ray player coming out, model number BDP-S300.

See:http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070604/ap_on_hi_te/sony_blu_ray_player

This new Blu-ray disc player offers a low price point of $499 and decodes Dolby Digital Plus, and advanced audio codec.
Additionally, this model plays back CDs, something the older previous model the, BDP-S1, did not.

Whether it does the advanced audio decoding interally of Dolby TRUEHD or DTS-HD (HR or MA) is not clear, but so far, no free BD discs are offered with its introduction.
This makes the Panasonic DMP-BD10A now coming out around Father's Day a bit more affordable with five free BD discs coming with it and advanced decoding included already.:D

For those "fence-sitters" who could care less about gaming, maybe want to use an IR remote
and get their Blu-ray High Definition DVD "fix"
(or are still waiting for TWC to add CinemaxHD and StarzHD to their mix of HD available channels)
 - here's another Blu-ray player option:
This model adds the "A" suffix to the player, contains the DolbyTRUEHD and DTS HD (HR, not MA) along with 1080p playback and DVD upconversion, including DVD-A and CD playback
-all for $599 (same as price as listed for the PS3).
To get you "motivated", five popular BD discs come with it (you fill out a form and mail).
Personally speaking, I have the first model (without the "A") and just recently upgraded it to the newer HD audio formats and it rocks (v2.0 from Panasonic).:D

I am updating our HD player section, now.

On/Off Topic Chit-Chat / Geek Squad = Bad Advice
Thursday May 03, 2007, 07:24:18 AM
Interesting thing happened at the local BB store the other day- the Geek Squad there "short circuited", er, offered bad advice, then I got the customer as a potential client.
First of all, the customer has a HTR-5940  which the Geek said was HDMI capable even though there is no HDMI port anywhere on the unit.
Secondly, the customer purchased a DVD-HD1080P from Samsung based on this advice.
When this customer asked their technician (installer) to identify the HDMI port (as directed to do so by me) the technician told the buyer/customer that you didn't need HDMI, as the proximity of the components to the Plasma Screen didn't require it.
He continued to say that you only use HDMI when you have a considerable distance to run cables between the Components and the Monitor, the monitor of which is HDMI capable.
On top of that, the customer was told that the upconversion process desired by the customer (by buying into this setup) will work "just fine".
I am certain that many BB employees are knowledgeable, but when your friends put their trust into those advertised to be trusted, it's just not fair to the customer.
Now I wonder how many other bad information customers have got from this Geek Squad member, so I will find the employee and do want anyone in our backround would do: report them.:D

As for me - I am doing some rewiring at my friend's house - and asking to see if there is some adjustment to whatever the Geek Squad sold him.

Latest News / Versus/Golf HD Coming to TWC
Monday Apr 09, 2007, 09:26:14 AM
According to this article, Versus/Golf HD is coming to TWC locations:

http://www.tvpredictions.com/twversus040907.htm

Now, PLEASE read the "fine print" on this:

"However, Mark Harrad, a Time Warner spokesman, says it's up to the individual Time Warner system whether to add the high-def channel."

Considering how pathetic our TWC - Wisconsin/Milwaukee location is when it comes to adding any HD channel additions, don't hold your breathe on this channel, either.

DO we see ESPN2HD, or CWHD, MHD, A&EHD, CinemaxHD or StarzHD as many other TWC locations have throughout the country?

No!.

If it was up to TWC-Milwaukee management, we would have no HD channels at all, given the chance.

Since it is the local/regional/divisional (or whatever) TWC that "makes the call" on what we as TWC HD subscribers actually "get" and given TWC-Milwaukee (Southeast), we have got none of the HD channels the rest of the TWC locations in the country have been getting.

From tvpredictions, the following interview with TWC Corporate:
http://www.tvpredictions.com/tw030907.htm

Looks like TWC Milwaukee will have to get Switched Digital Video to obtain bandwidth for more HD channels, among other questions on some folks minds about TWC.

I wonder what the hold-up on SDV is in Milwaukee as I thought it was supposed to occur about six months ago?
