Best way to run long RCA cables.

I need to run RCA cables from one room to another.  Rather than buying lets say 50' of RCA cables, is it possible to use regular coax cable and crimp RCA connectors to the end?  These cables would be hooked to a wall plate with RCA connectors on the outside.  Has anyone seen a plate with RCA connectors on one side and standard coax connectors on the other?  Just trying to get my options here.  Thanks!

Yes you can do that, it's not a problem.  There are adaptors to go to RCA's but there are also RCA's to attach to the coax.  I've made many cables this way with a crimper and RCA connectors using RG6.

Thanks for the fast reply.  Would Radio Shack have this stuff, or would I need a more specialized store?

Gregg Lengling

Probably a more specialized store.  However there are rumors running around that Radio Shack's upper management is trying to get back to it's roots.  There is a lot of markup on parts and apparently during this year you will see a great influx of parts back in the RatShacks.

I have done this in multiple rooms, and I have found partsexpress.com to be a great resource.  They have plates that I have used for RCA runs.  The two types that have used are an F connector on the inside of the wall, but a female RCA connection on the front of the plate.  I have also used the RCA pass through, but then you have to make the cable using male RCA connections.  I like using the first option the best.  Parts Express has all of those connections and face plates.  I would recommend making the cables with compression fittings.  The screw on type or crimps never seem to have the same quality.

Here is the link to the F connector to RCA bulkhead that I used.  You can also find wall plates from 1 gang to 8 gang connections.
